Fr Damien, of Damien House fame, was a young Belgian priest sent to the other side of the world to minister in the Hawaiian Islands. Molokai was one of those and where lepers were deposited. Sent to live together and die of that dreadful disease. The Bishop asked his priests to take turns to work on the island – a few weeks on and then escape. Fr Damien took his turn and decided to stay. He knew he was choosing a death sentence, but he chose to stand with the outcasts. He helped them build schools and medical clinics until he eventually succumbed to the disease. He is a great story for our young people about standing with those on the outskirts and supporting those who don’t enjoy much support.
In our Catholic tradition, we will begin Lent on Wednesday. Each House will have a liturgy and ashes will be distributed. For those who haven’t seen this tradition before, individuals will be invited to have a cross of ash placed on their forehead as a sign of some commitment to live out the Gospel of Jesus better.
Another harsh reminder of Lent will be thrust upon our students on Wednesday as we observe that Catholic tradition of not eating meat on Ash Wednesday which will mean a change in the offerings at the Canteen!
Parents & Friends will have our first meeting tomorrow (13/2) at 5.15pm in the College Staff room. All are most welcome.
Interhouse Swimming Carnival is on Thursday. Year 8, 9 & 11 will have the first half of the day at the pool and Year 7, 10 & 12 in the afternoon. Please ensure that your child has a rashie and plenty of sunscreen. The Swimming Carnival is a great event and we expect all to take part. It is one of our ‘Special Days’ in our calendar and is a part of our attendance requirements.
Friday is a Student Free Day as our staff will be involved with the Diocesan wide ‘Bishop’s In-Service’ Day.

Year 11 Information
Last week Year 11 students and parents received an email outlining information relating to the management of assessment for students under the QCAA system. Please take the time to discuss this information with your child/ren so that they are clear about the expectations around assessment, QCE attainment and ATAR.
Year 12 Information
Year 12 students and parents were emailed with information relating to the confirmation process involved with all Year 12 summative internal assessment under the QCAA system. Please note the structure of term three and four is different because of the External Assessments:
• Term 3, Weeks 9-10: Mock Exam Block and compulsory catch up sessions
• Term 4, Weeks 1-3: Year 12 attend normal classes
• Term 4, Weeks 4-7: External Assessment Block
The College Calendar identifies when the QCAA External Examination are held for all Year 12 students in Queensland. It is important to realise that the external assessment block is compulsory for all students studying General and General Extension subjects. No ‘make up’ examinations are offered by QCAA if students are absent. Please make sure these dates are locked into your calendar.
Middle School
A practice NAPLAN test will be held on Thursday 22 February. Students must have corded headphones to undertake the practice test. Year 7 and Year 9 students will sit the NAPLAN online tests from Wednesday 13 March – Monday 25 March.
If you have any concerns about NAPLAN or if you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Mrs Megan Munckton, Dean of Middle School, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com
Please note: all students MUST have corded headphones or earphones to undertake the NAPLAN Online testing. This is the responsibility of families to ensure that students have their earphones or headphones for all test days, including the practice test. These headphones/earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. Wireless headphones (e.g., Apple air pods) are not compatible. If you need to purchase headphones or earphones, we suggest you do this as soon as possible. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6.

Year 12 Exam Block – Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 February
Year 12 students will participate in an exam block from Monday 19 – Wednesday 21 February. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached below. Students participating in this exam block will undergo Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
New Feedback Method- Learner Attributes
In 2024, Shalom College is excited to announce we are changing the way we give feedback on ‘learning attributes’ of our students to parents. In previous years, Shalom has issued an Interim Report card at the beginning of Term 2 as well as the normal End-of-Semester Report cards. Our new method of feedback will replace the Interim Report card. Additionally, the End-of-Semester Report cards will no longer show Application and Behaviour.
Instead, teachers will give feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes. This will be published to parents at the end of Week 5 in Term 1 & 3 for all Year 7-12 subjects and PC classes, and at the end of Week 5 in Term 2 & 4 for the Year 7/8 rotation subjects that occur in those terms.
Each student will be awarded either a Consistently (4), Mostly (3), Sometimes (2), Rarely (1) or Never (0) in the following criteria:
- Organisation - punctual to class, correct equipment in good working order, laptop charged, record book present
- Application - actively engaged in learning, appropriate use of technology (laptop, phone etc), homework complete
- Presentation - uniform worn appropriately, follows school guidelines for hair, make-up, jewellery etc
- College Values - treats others with dignity and respect, displays a positive attitude
This will appear on Sia Parent Dashboard under ‘Grades’.
and will appear as a mark out of 16.
More detailed information can be found by clicking on the ‘Learning Attributes’ link on the above screen.
After the initial feedback is published, teachers are able to update these criteria and re-publish them to parents at any time throughout the year and add a comment if necessary. Parents are advised of updates via Notifications in Sia. In this way, reporting on your child’s application in class is ‘live’, improving the quality of feedback for parents. We believe this is a significant improvement in our communication with parents, compared with the previous ‘point-in-time’ reporting.
Please note that end-of semester reports will still be issued as normal, however there will be no grade for Application and Behaviour on these reports.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions/concerns about our new method of providing feedback.
2024 Student Residential Address and Other Information Collection Notice
The 2024 Student Residential Address and Other Information collection notice distributed by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment. This data is routinely used to inform Commonwealth school education policy, and to help ensure that Commonwealth funding arrangements for non-government schools are based on need, and are fair and transparent.
Could you please ensure that your address and contact details are up-to-date through the Parent Details tab in Parent Lounge to ensure accurate collection of this data?
PLEASE UPDATE YOUR SHALOM COLLEGE PHONE APP
Recently, Shalom has had some important updates to the phone app. Most notably, there is now a new button called ‘Clipboard’.
Clipboard is the application our sporting coaches use currently to record results and attendance at school sporting events. This year, we are allowing access for parents and students. This will allow students and parents to see:
- the schedule for upcoming sporting events for you/your/child both through the phone app as well as in the Sia Calendar
- the teams you/your child has signed up for
- any changes to the draw/venue etc which will be communicated via notifications on the phone app
Some of these functions are currently available while others will be rolled out over coming weeks. In the future, Clipboard may also be used for music groups, community groups etc and we may unlock other features through Clipboard – watch this space!
To enable these features to occur, could all members of the Shalom community update their Shalom phone app as soon as possible? Those who have automatic updates should have this installed automatically. If your screen looks like the picture below, with the ‘Clipboard’ button showing, then your phone is updated.
If you do not have automatic updates, you will need to go to your App Store, search for the Shalom College phone app, and press update. The update only takes seconds to do.
Please complete this update as soon as possible to gain the benefits that Clipboard offers.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Lent
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday this week. This season offers us an opportunity to enter into a deeper relationship with the mystery of Jesus Christ. Throughout Lent, Catholics are called to reflect on how they are living their lives and commit more fully to prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Our Lenten journey begins with Ash Wednesday this week. This is one of the most important holy days in the liturgical calendar and in recognition of that we will have House Assemblies on Ash Wednesday to pause, pray and distribute the blessed Ashes. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. The Ashes will be blessed prior to House Assemblies at the 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. All are welcome to join with our greater community at this Parish Mass.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.
Wednesday 14 February Mrs Ingall & Mrs Freeman 12SOR A & B (Ash Wednesday)
Wednesday 21 February Mr Church 11 SOR A & B
Wednesday 28 February Miss Bryson 12 RAE A & D
Also, if you would like to join in other Parish services, the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg advertises Mass times at https://www.bundabergcatholic.net.au/mass-prayer/

Eliesha Y is a friendly and diligent current Year 11 MacKillop student. She is a very active MacKillop House member, always willing to participate in all House activities. The students of MacKillop were recently privileged to listen to Eliesha’s talents when she played guitar and sung on House Assembly as part of her Pastoral Care class hosting the assembly. Her performance was outstanding and very impressive to us all. She has accepted her role as senior buddy this year with enthusiasm and continues to be a positive role model to all students in MacKillop House.
Duke of Edinburgh's International Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a program for young people aged between 14 and 25 years old.
Taking part in the Award isn’t easy – it requires commitment over time – but it is simple to get started and after all the time and effort participants put into the program, they will have achieved something special of which they can be very proud.
Participants:
• Design their own Award program
• Set goals and record progress
• Make a positive impact on the lives of others through community service
• Be challenged by an Adventurous Journey
Although it is a significant commitment, often participants can continue with activities they are already taking part in, such as sports or volunteering, and count these towards achieving their Award. Otherwise, it could be an opportunity to try something new and develop a passion for something different.
In 2024, Shalom College will be looking at running Bronze and Silver awards with adventurous journeys’ for Bronze and Silver in Canoeing.
In 2023, Shalom College Bronze award candidates completed an Adventurous Journey in Canoeing on the Sunshine Coast. In previous years participants have completed awards at other levels (Silver and Gold) and have completed Adventurous Journeys on the South Passage, a sail training ship, while others did a combination of Bushwalking and Canoeing Adventurous Journeys. In previous years, I have taken students on the Thorsbourne Trail in North Queensland, the Victorian High Plains, and the Kokoda Track in PNG.
If you have an interest in joining up for the Duke of Edinburgh Award (at any level), feel free to contact me by email david_eke@shalomcollege.com if you have further questions or you can go to the Duke of Edinburgh website https://dukeofed.com.au/
The cost to complete the Bronze award through the Shalom College Award Centre is $220. This is paid through Parent Lounge. Watch out for notices of meetings in Sia.

Cafe Wisdom - Argyle Gardens Coffee & Conversation
Monday 5 February saw the first afternoon of coffee and conversation at Argyle Gardens Retirement Village between some of the Residents and 15 of our Year 11 and 12 students. This first gathering was small, with 10 Residents joining our students in the beautiful recreation room for an hour of exchanging stories and shooting the breeze. The gathering was enhanced by fresh, barista-made coffee and hot chocolate, made by the lovely staff from Favours Coffee which is owned by local businessman and ex-Shalom student, Kyle Myers. Favours are fully sponsoring our visits to Argyle Gardens, supplying delicious beverages, made on site at their mobile coffee van. We can’t thank Favours Coffee enough! The students were outstanding and engaged readily in conversation with the Residents and the feedback from the Residents was exceptionally positive. It was magnificent to see the exchange of wisdom between the generations and the beautiful spirit in which it occurred. Next Café Wisdom is Monday 4 April.

The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
