Last week we had the presentation by Hollie Siebold. If your child, or you, uses social media, and you weren’t able to attend the session, make a cuppa and sit down and watch the recording of this talk. She was excellent.
I watched last week a show on Sky called, ‘Haters Online - Erin Molan Fights Back’. It is really worth watching as well. Molan interviews the E-Safety Commissioner who says that the issue of safety online is the biggest issue for 95% for parents but only 10% of parents do anything about it. Let’s not be in that 85%.
Download Hollie Seibold's Social Media & Emotional Wellbeing Handout HereI had to have an interview with a parent last week who was querying a practice we have at Shalom about how we deal with students who use a Vape, or supply a Vape or who are silly enough to stand beside someone else using a Vape. I pointed out that automatic Suspension has been clearly spelled out in Newsletters and to the students. This parent replied that they don’t often get time to read the Newsletter! (a small piece of my heart broke off!) The weekly Newsletter is one of the most important sources of communication for us. I really hope that every parent would make it a priority to read each week.
On Friday, I sent out a letter to all parents about the issue of student absences. I will speak to the students about this on Assembly this week. I dread having a conversation with a parent when they discover that their child won’t be able to attend the College Formal or be selected in representative sports team or be eligible for a Leadership position and they tell me that they have never heard of these procedures! Here it is again if it was missed on Friday.
Since I sent this out, I have had a few responses, happily, all positive. One of those emails had a great line, “I just wanted to reply to this email for a few reasons. Firstly, the cartoon image you used was great and my response to all of those excuses when my kids attempt to use them is… I don’t mind what others do - they’re not my monkeys, and that’s not my circus..”
The Year 12s had their last day of classes on Friday. External exams began today. Many of our Year 12s, who don’t do General subjects, have virtually concluded their time at Shalom. To all of these wonderful young people, we wish them every success and happiness. We hope and pray that they are quickly growing to be the young adults each one of their parents dreamed of.
The retirement of Mrs Taylor and the departure of Mrs O’Shea-Hard will mean changes in the Leadership team at Shalom in 2023. Mrs Sandra Freeman has been appointed as Assistant Principal Mission and will do a great job replacing Mary. Mrs Austin-Campbell will move from her current position looking after student welfare and well-being to take over the portfolio of Kim O’Shea-Hard being responsible for staffing. We will advertise for an Assistant Principal Student Formation. I am enormously grateful for the work Mrs Austin-Campbell does in this role. She always looks for ‘win-win’ solutions with students but is also able to hold our young people to a high account. She is a wonderful educator.
I hope that parents did that bit of ‘homework’ that I set in last week’s newsletter and sat with their kids and watched the five minute clip from Neal Daniher. I have watched it about six times since last week and continue to find it powerful –
*this clip is longer – 15 minutes – I came across it looking for last week’s clip. Daniher is talking to a different group. I think it’s even better than the shorter one!

Student Welfare and Information
Important News for Year 11
On Tuesday November 8, we welcome our newest members to Shalom – the Year 7s 2023. On this afternoon, the Year 7s 2023 will meet their House Coordinator and their buddy – two people who will be a constant in their first year of high school.
So, it is vital that the Year 11 buddies are present for this afternoon otherwise we will have a Year 7 2023 at the Orientation afternoon with no buddy.
If they have part-time work, they will need to ask for this afternoon off or inform their employer that they can work from 6:00pm onwards. Their absence would not be acceptable.
We talk at length with the Year 11s about service leadership and this is one of those times where they need to put this into practice – to do something for the benefit of others rather than themselves.
The date is in the College calendar.
I do appreciate the important work that these young people will do over the coming school year.
Absences and Punctuality
It has been a goal for this year to have our student attendance rate at 95%. In Term 3 the rate of attendance was 92%. It is very important for a child’s education to be at school and in classes. If not, they risk falling behind academically.
Punctuality, particularly on a Monday morning, continues to be a concern. Students are expected to be at school by 8:30am. Unfortunately, the same students are late, including some student drivers. If a student is late, and this does happen occasionally, we ask that a parent writes a note; does not have to go into detail and if you have more than one student, one note between your children is sufficient. Thank you very much for the increasing number of parents who write a note of explanation. If a student does not present a note, the lateness goes on their report card as an unexplained absence.
Acts of Kindness
This was an initiative of McCormack House. Students were asked to write notes of kindness for someone who had been kind to them – could be another student or a teacher, office staff etc. They wrote the notes on strips of coloured paper – the colours matching their House.
Once this was completed the strips were assembled on a wall in the junior eating area. I have included photos of students who were reading the notes and then I gathered others together to show off the display.
Well done McCormack House.
Year 12 Picnic Lunch
To finish the year, the Year 12 gathered in Chisholm block for a picnic lunch. They organised food to share within their friendship group, picnic rugs and all. We had a band – Rafe, Liam and Max – playing. Running on a continuous loop were photos of the Year 12s along with their Year 7 photos (or their first photo at the school if they joined us later). A few Formal photos also appeared.
I have included a few photos of our picnic.
Wishing all the Year 12s the best for their exams.

Giving Tree
Jesus directs us throughout the Gospels to share what we have with others. Not just our friends and families but with those we don’t know. In one parable Jesus reminds us that to experience eternal life with God we have to reach out to those in need.
Each year Shalom students give generously to our annual Giving Tree Appeal and this year we will once again be participating in this worthy cause. On Thursday 10 November we ask that all students bring a gift, gift card or money to donate to St Vincent de Paul through our Giving Tree. These items will be distributed to families in the Bundaberg area who otherwise could not provide these extras for their families over Christmas.

Year 7 students Ollie and Tanner are our Walsh Quiet Achievers.
These two boys have had a fantastic year to begin their high school education. They have done an awesome job of settling into the college as well as integrating with other PC member of Walsh 5.
They have their record books set out correctly and neatly, sit with their buddies and interact well with them, and ensure they interact with the other members of their PC group. They are gold!

Legally Blonde Musical Auditions
The Performing Arts department are proud to announce Shalom’s musical for 2023 as Legally Blonde!
Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside down when her boyfriend Warner dumps her so he can attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle ingeniously charms her way into the prestigious law school. While there, she struggles with peers, professors and her ex. With the support of some new friends, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.
Those wishing to audition will need to learn a short song and dance routine from the musical on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 October at the beginning of lunch.
Auditions will then be held in Week 5.
Anyone and everyone are welcome to audition, no matter the level of experience or skill. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs McSherry in the Performing Arts department.

Damien House Presentation for Share the Dignity Charity
At the Year 12 Farewell House Assembly last Thursday, Damien House were fortunate to have Ms Lisa Park from Share the Dignity join us. Our Seniors were able present the charity with the hundreds of products from our donation drive and a cheque for $781 from the snow cone fundraiser and Shalom Day donations. Well done to our Senior Leaders for doing a wonderful job in raising awareness of the important work of Share the Dignity, particularly the outstanding leadership from Brad who spent much time and energy organising the Snow Cone fundraiser. Thank you to all Damien families that contributed donations – every bar of soap, bottle of shampoo and sanitary product donated will ensure someone in need is treated with dignity in the Wide Bay region. Special mention again to the families of Aleisha, Connor and Ally for their significant contributions.
Great job Damien House!

Science-fiction utopias and dystopias in literature emerged alongside Victorian fantasy in the form of Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864). H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine (1895) and The War of the Worlds (1898), and then progressed on to the novels of authors like Ray Bradbury and George Orwell. Innovations in publishing and printing saw a trend for cheaper, lighter, ‘pulp’ books to be produced, these were thought to be easily carried on long commutes. Magazine and comic book style reading flourished, and these proved a suitable modern media for serial sci-fi stories.
Mounting nuclear anxieties, the Cold War, Russian spies, Roswell rumours, and the perceived threat of alien invasion are likely reasons for the sudden explosion of science fiction films. Starting in the early 1950’s with Destination Moon, through to iconic sci-fi titans like The War of the Worlds (1953), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and The Blob (1958). The spectacular introduction of colour film and gimmicks such as 3D were marketed to the adolescent demographic and so were inextricably linked to a new generation shedding the old, stressful World War 2 austerity. It was a time for distant galaxies, rocketship dreams and “to boldly go where no man has gone before”. The United States was the heavier hitter for this genre, it’s influence clear in the social culture of the time. Mid-century modern ‘googie’ architecture (think Las Vegas or The Jetsons), was named for a 1949 Los Angeles coffee-house and featured exaggerated angles, plastic and steel, wide-eyed optimism, and futuristic visions.
Science fiction is still a popular genre in literature today with epics like Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time (1962), Frank Herbert’s Dune (1965), Douglas Adams Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1979) Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games (2008). Further authors to look for in the vast sea of science fiction writers are Jay Kristoff, Orson Scott Card, Amie Kaufman, Rick Yance, and Neal Shusterman.
