School Captains 2023 – I was very pleased to be able to announce at Assembly last week that Molly Sellers (MacKillop) and Cooper Leeson (Rice) will be our School Captains for the coming year. These two young people were chosen after a vote by their peers and staff. Their call to leadership is a recognition of the commitment to the values of Shalom that they have both consistently shown over the past five years. I have no doubt that this will continue in 2023.
Giving Tree Assembly is on Thursday 10 November. Each year families are asked to donate unwrapped toys suitable for young or school age children or cash that will be used by the St Vincent de Paul society to assist families in need this Christmas. This is always a highlight event for Shalom and I hope that, again, Shalom families will be very generous in supporting this appeal.
An Afternoon of Beautiful Music was held on Saturday, in the Holy Rosary Church, a large crowd were thoroughly entertained by the Shalom Strings Department, Choir and Vocal Ensemble. The students were fantastic and we highlighted the Year 12 students who are part of the Strings program, and wider music department who are leaving the College. It was just a wonderful experience. It highlighted, again, the outstanding level of leadership and musical expertise contained in our staff. Special mention goes to Ms Bernadette Connolly, Ms Nicole Strohfeldt, Mr Ian King, Ms Christie McLucas and so ably supported by Ms Kate Hardisty, Ms Wendy Davis & Mr Sean Udal.

Giving Tree
Jesus directs us throughout the Gospels to share what we have with others. Not just our friends and families but with those we don’t know. In one parable Jesus reminds us that to experience eternal life with God we have to reach out to those in need.
Each year Shalom students give generously to our annual Giving Tree Appeal and this year we will once again be participating in this worthy cause. On Thursday 10 November we ask that all students bring a gift, gift card or money to donate to St Vincent de Paul through our Giving Tree. These items will be distributed to families in the Bundaberg area who otherwise could not provide these extras for their families over Christmas.
Halloween
Last week, our Director, Ms Leesa Jeffcoat, reminded us of the background to Halloween. She directed us to an article by Elizabeth Harrington where she advises:-
- Halloween is simply All Hallows Eve - that is the day before All Saints Day (November 1) which is followed by All Souls Day (November 2). Both days are reminders that all of us, living and dead are united with Christ and one another.
- It originated in the ancient Celtic tribes who lived in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany.
- Halloween symbols of skeletons and skulls remind us of our own mortality and the need to pray for the dead. It also invites us to talk openly about death in a culture that largely avoids the subject.
- The carving of pumpkins into Jack-o’-lanterns is linked to a story - Jack was a gifted fellow who was completely self-centred and never in his life used his talents to help another human being. Jack had the cleverness to outwit the devil, but it wasn’t enough to get him into heaven. Hence, he is condemned to roam forever between heaven and earth, holding his pumpkin light high.
Elizabeth Harrington concludes that, “Rather than trying to ignore or resist the growing popularity of Halloween in this country, perhaps we can take advantage of the opportunities it offers to talk about a Christian understanding of the big issues of life and death, good and evil.”

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The 'goal posts' for all our students are different, however all students are capable of acheiving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.

Tech Expo
66% of Australian ‘digital workers’ use digital technologies as a part of their work. Research indicates that this number will increase to 96% in only five years, encompassing workers from every sector and all levels of seniority. At the same time, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) career paths are becoming increasingly in-demand. In particular, data related occupations have more than doubled over the past five years.
So, it is vital to shift our perspective about who digital skills are for. While tech-based qualifications are often recommended for students looking at careers in IT, web development or cyber security, aspiring tradespeople, retail workers or entrepreneurs can’t be excluded.
The brand-new virtual Tech Expo delivers career advice, employer exhibitors and additional resources, with a focus on gaining digital skills and exploring tech careers. Within the Expo, there are video interviews with successful Aussie tech CEOs such as Atlassian’s Scott Farquhar and Tesla executive Robyn Denholm, as well as young people working in tech roles today.
The Year13 x Digital Skills Organisation Tech Expo is now live, and is completely free to access. The virtual event will be available for two weeks, concluding on Friday 4 November.

Year 11 student Stacey is a fantastic member of Chisholm House. She participates in all events, encouraging others and supporting House leaders whenever possible. Furthermore, her academic achievements are superb as she continues to get excellent grades in all subjects, for the fifth year in a row. This year alone, Stacey has been involved in the Indigenous Leadership camp, Brain Bee Challenge, Maths Team Challenge, UQ Science Ambassador, Science Fair and represented the College in Cross Country! "If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear!" - Frankenstein (1818, ch 17.) So was the lonely cry from the abomination conjured by Mary Wollstonecraft Goodwin in 1816, the year of no summer.
While large parts of Europe and North America were shrouded in ash from the eruption of Mount Tambora, Indonesia, Lord Byron, Mary, and a handful of associates were entertaining themselves at the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva with a writing contest. John William Polidori’s The Vampyre (1819) was also a product of this summer on the lake and was inspired by Byron’s initial literary musings.
Though the roots of horror fiction can be traced back to at least the Inquisition, it was perhaps Edmund Burke’s study on the concept of the sublime in his A philosophical inquiry into the origins of our ideas of the beautiful and the sublime in 1875 which paved the way for the gothic literature that followed.
For the western world, the cultivation of literary horror began with a fascination with the mysticism of the paranormal, another form of escapism which emerged from 18th century pre-Romantic times. Although Mary Wollstonecraft's deviation from the occult and into the world of science, albiet fantastical, would seem to class her work as more science fiction than horror, it is generally accepted in either genre.
Also In 1818, Jane Austen’s Northhanger Abby was published, followed by the grotesquely terrifying psychological poems of Edgar Allen Poe in the 1840’s. This decade welcomed the appearance of the gothic works of the Bronte sisters Emily and Charlotte as well. Horace Walpole’s eerie novel The Castle of Otranto (1875) was considered a landmark contribution to the gothic horror genre. 1886 saw The strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Luis Stevenson, and then Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). Oscar Wilde produced the novella The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1890 which was followed by H.G. Wells’ The island of Dr. Moreau in 1896.
Fast forward to the twentieth century and the new king of gothic horror was the well-known Stephen King. He was joined by the likes of Anne Rice and Angela Carter who both wove their passion for feminism into their vampire stories. Rice’s amoral antihero Lestat stands as a deviation from the traditionally presented vampire and set the stage for the introduction of the broodier, more romantic characters found in Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series.
Today the horror genre is broad but the romanticism and mysticism that was established by the gothic horror heroes has prevailed and distorted to inspire new dystopian terror plots inflaming the imaginations of new generations.
