Two things can be true at the same time. This seems to be an unpopular concept in an increasingly polarized world. I am committed to the Catholic Church in spite of many spectacular failures by my Church. The Church, at its best, remains a sign of hope, faith and love for so many in our world, especially the poor. At the same time, the Church still has so much work to do to reclaim the confidence of the community after years of confirmed reports of sexual abuse and, worse, cover up. This will be a work in progress for some time but may, in time, have great benefits. We will see Churches that are more humble, more human and more inclusive and supportive. The Institute of Child Protection Study within the Australian Catholic University published a report last week which revealed about 0.4% of the population, or an estimated 87,000 Australians, experienced sexual abuse during childhood by leaders and other adults in religious organisations including male and female clergy, priests, and pastors. Happily, more current data would indicate that processes implemented have had very positive effects to more recent generations. We still have lots to work on and all Churches have much to reflect upon. Some practices, traditions and beliefs are rooted in practices, traditions and beliefs that were just wrong. Along with being a Pope Francis fan, I really
admire Archbishop Jeremy Greaves who is the leader of the Anglican Church in Brisbane. He writes and speaks very authentically as a Christian leader. He was quoted in last weekend’s Courier Mail making a very public apology to those who are same sex attracted or transgender. Leadership takes courage and the Jesus I believe in, would be very proud of this statement. Bishop Jeremy said, “We apologise to sexually diverse and gender diverse people for the times when we have not accepted that you are who you are. We have denigrated you, we have excluded you from Sacraments and the community of the Anglican Church. There are times when we supported the criminalisation of your sexuality, we’ve advocated for and or condoned the practices known as ‘conversion therapy’. We have isolated you and subjected you to mistreatment and when we have not spoken up to protect you from violence and exclusion.”
In 2022, the Australian Catholic Bishops released a document as a guide for those of us in Education in how we should work with students in our schools entitled, ‘Created & Loved: A Guide for Catholic Schools on Gender and Identity’. This document reminds us all that every human person is equal in the eyes of God and is precious. The lives of our young people and the issues that they face today and will face tomorrow are not simple, nor black and white. Good Catholic schools will help young people think and reflect carefully on the issues of their lives and the world.
I shared with staff last week, after reading Bishop Jeremy’s apology, a prayer written by Pope Francis that teachers might pray, “May we use the power that we have as educators to instil within our students the values of equality, stewardship, compassion and love for one’s neighbour. In our interactions with students, may we always model what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus, who demonstrated authentic servant leadership, even to the point of death.”
Bundy Bingo – has run for 40 years. The Carswell family have been the mainstay of this operation all of that time. Over those years, Bundy Bingo has raised funds for Surf Lifesaving and Shalom College. Each year we receive a cheque from the Carswell’s for a share of the profits. Over the years, that has amounted to almost $500,000. I got a letter from Danny last week outlining the history of Bingo and any long term Bundaberg person would find an interesting read.
Shalom Clothing Store – we are still in negotiations with Weareco, the company that produces most of our school uniform, to hand over operation of our Clothing Store to them. This new business will be a commercial site not on our property. All going well, the new store which will sell all of our uniform lines, will be operating early in Term 4. There are a number of factors which have led the College Board to make this decision. Hopefully, a full-time commercial premises with a strong on-line purchasing platform, will offer parents a level of service that we can’t. In the lead up to this changeover, our Clothing Store will operate as normal.
Parent Pick Up Eggmolesse Street – I received an email from Council last week pointing out that they had been observing traffic in the afternoons in Eggmolesse St. Apparently, parents are parking and waiting for their children while parked on the Yellow Lines. The email asked me to alert parents to this and remind them that this practice is illegal. They asked that we forward this reminder to all as a ‘friendly warning’. The next one may be QPS or BRC Traffic officers issuing parking infringement notices.

Shalom Day
Our annual celebration of all things ‘Shalom’ is coming up on Thursday 22 August.
For students this is a free dress day. No crop tops, singlet tops, short shorts or ripped jeans. They will require closed in shoes and they need to bring a hat, but it doesn’t have to be a school hat. Students are asked to bring a gold coin to donate to their House Charity. Students should bring a small bag for their lunch, hat, water bottle and sunscreen. No devices will be needed as they will be too busy participating in activities to use them.
We would also like grandparents to come along for the Prayer Celebration at 10am and the morning tea that follows. We will have seating in the Sports Centre for those that are able to join us on the day.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 8 students.
Wednesday 14 August Mrs Nicole Anderson's RE 8.0 + 8.5
Wednesday 21 August Mr Brett Wyatt's RE 8.2 + 8.3
Wednesday 28 August Mr Sam McMah's RE 8.1 + Mrs Sommerfield's RE 8.6
Also, if you would like to join in other Parish services, the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg advertises Mass times at https://www.bundabergcatholic.net.au/mass-prayer/

Congratulations to the Shalom Athletics Team and Team Managers (Mrs Somerfield and Mr McMah) for a very successful two days last week. Shalom scooped the pool (or should I say track) and won the Junior and Senior Divisions. Shalom students also claimed four Age Champions: Charlie E (12yrs Boys), Josie P (15yrs Girls), Lachlan C (tied in the 17yrs Boys) and Hannah R (18yrs Girls). A Bundy District Team will now be selected to compete at the Wide Bay Carnival on August 26-27.

Recently Ari B competed and represented Gymfinty at the Central Queensland Junior Regional Championships held in Gladstone. This event consisted of 8 Clubs from Regional Queensland competing in both Men's Artistic Gymnastics & Women’s Artistic gymnastics.
Ari was awarded 1st Place Overall Champion for MAG Level 4 with the highest overall score for the day for the combined apparatus.
Ari also placed on 5 x apparatus receiving five medals (4 x silver & 1 x bronze). These apparatus included Rings, High Bars, Pommel Horse, Parrel Bars, Vault & Floor.
Ari has now been selected for the Central Queensland Regional Challenge Team. Only six gymnasts were selected form the regional club teams to represent the Central Queensland Regional Challenge Team. This event will take place later in the year at the Queensland Junior States, which will be held in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast - TBA.

RYDA is a National Road Safety education program for youth in Australia. It provides youth with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on the roads.
The RYDA workshop features highly engaging practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, quizzes and interactive role play. The RYDA approach supports youth development in a number of areas including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk. Created for senior high schools, RYDA gives students a unique opportunity to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with, as drivers or passengers. At the workshop, students attend six interactive sessions at a dedicated venue over the course of a school day. Shalom Oztag Sponsor Spotlight
Thank you to our sponsors for their support of our students in 2024!
Black Lab Finance is a local finance broking business founded by Jacob Arden, who has 14 years of experience in banking and finance. The company specialises in complex lending scenarios that other finance companies and banks may find challenging. Jacob’s background in Private Banking helps the team provide tailored financial solutions to meet clients’ unique needs.
Their expertise in navigating intricate financial situations and offering personalised services beyond the scope of traditional banks. Black Lab Finance are committed to providing the best possible advice and support for their clients’ financial journeys.
Why did you choose to sponsor our All-School Oztag teams?
As a family deeply connected to the school, it was a natural decision for us to sponsor the Shalom All School's teams. The school has given so much to our family, and this sponsorship is our way of giving back and showing our gratitude. We believe in the importance of supporting the school community that has played a significant role in shaping our family's values and experiences.
Being a local small business, supporting community initiatives is vital to us. The Bundaberg community has been a tremendous supporter of Black Lab Finance, and we are committed to reciprocating that support. By sponsoring local school teams and participating in community activities, we strive to strengthen the bonds within our community and contribute to its growth an success.“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss (American children’s author, political cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, and filmmaker)
Pope Francis apparently agrees with this as his letter The Role of Literature in Formation, emphasizes the great benefits of reading poems and fiction books. He addresses his belief that literature allows self-exploration and awareness, resilience, tolerance and creativity, and sets the pathway to personal maturity.
He says that books …
“...can provide an oasis that keeps us from other choices that are less wholesome. Likewise, in moments of weariness, anger, disappointment or failure, when prayer itself does not help us find inner serenity, a good book can help us weather the storm until we find peace of mind.”
Reading creates the ideal environment to develop better concentration and critical thinking. Delving into different worlds and unfamiliar scenarios initiates curiosity and the willingness to explore and analyse. Reading establishes connections with concepts beyond the sphere of our own lives and so promotes an insight into other people’s situations. What better way to create a lifelong understanding and tolerance of the differences amongst us.
Friday Shalom celebrated its First Draft Festival which has now been extended to include a half-day version for the year 7’s and 8’s. During the festival close to 150 of the students were exposed to the literary experiences and skills of some of our local authors.
It is ventures like this that we hope will engage this generation with literature, excite their creative minds, and instill in them a desire to develop habits that will be with them throughout their lives whatever career path they choose to take.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to ser
ve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given. This concludes the weekend of September 14 & 15.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love
respectfully, with all people”.
