“A Fish Rots from Its Head” is a well known colloquialism. Having never taken the time to actually watch a dead fish decay, I have no idea whether that is actually true or not. However, I am certain that the general meaning of that old saying is absolutely true. It is a statement about leadership. If leaders don’t lead well, organisations decay – quickly. Leadership at Shalom is crucial to how the College functions. That is something of which I am constantly aware and one of my most important roles is to choose good people to share the leadership at Shalom. Last week I was very pleased to be able to advise staff that Mrs Gail Norris will be our new Deputy Principal from 2025. We lose a lot next year with the resignation of Elizabeth Austin-Campbell who has made a profound contribution to the leadership of Shalom. I have no doubt that Gail will fill those big shoes admirably. She is a highly regarded classroom teacher and has led the development of Curriculum here for many years. She encourages students and her colleagues to be the best that they can be. My leadership at Shalom is strongly supported by the team around me who ensure that all facets of school life are focused on how best we can support the learning and personal development of every one of our young women and men. We will be advertising for a new Assistant Principal Curriculum to replace Gail very shortly. We need another great leader at Shalom.
So much to celebrate – over the last few weeks so many wonderful achievements by members of this community:
• Performance Dance teams & individuals achieving brilliantly in Adelaide
• Junior Vicki Wilson Netball team playing their socks off at State Comp
• Musicians & singers at the Qld Catholic Schools Music Festival & ‘Jazz at the Railway Hotel’ over the last two weekends
• Charlie D from Year 12 being awarded the ‘Prof Peter Doherty’ award for an outstanding STEM student in Queensland
• Rowers performing really well at last weekend’s Head of the River
• Shalom Day 2024 – just an amazing celebration of a wonderful culture at the school
This is not an exhaustive list and I’m sure I’ve left off plenty but it is indicative of so many students rising to the lead given them by an outstanding number of staff at Shalom ready to go above and beyond for the young people in their care. Not to be taken for granted.

Shalom Day
Last Thursday, we celebrated Shalom Day, the day that we set aside on our calendar to celebrate and strengthen our school culture. This year was extra special as we marked our 40th birthday. Celebrations during the day included a prayer assembly on the theme ‘Garden of Life’, acknowledgment of staff who have worked at the college for 10 years, a talent show and a House Dance Competition. We welcomed our Grandparents for part of the day and treated them to a lovely morning tea. Another highlight was the past staff and students, who recorded messages to the current students, wishing them a happy Shalom Day. Student participation on the day was exceptional and special mention goes to Hogan House for winning the House Dance this year.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 8 and Year 9 students.

Rowing Head of River Success
After 3 terms of training & practice regattas, the local schools rowing season has come to an end, with the final Bundaberg All Schools Combined Head of River Regatta. The 2-day regatta was held over the weekend (Saturday 24 & Sunday 25 August) with 40 of our rowers participating in over 50 heats and finals races. Shalom put in their strongest performance yet. In the 33 events we were nominated in, we brought home 22 x Gold, 16 x Silver & 5 x Bronze. Even beat our results from last year!! Our oarsome gold medallist are listed below:
The final event to take out the HOR trophy was an Open Mixed Quad. Our team of Sam C, Jacob N, Sophie E, Mary S & Cox Stan M put in an exceptional effort and came home with silver. A big congratulations to all the rowers on their outstanding commitment to this oarsome sport. They have gone from strength to strength over the five regattas.
A huge THANK-YOU again to the parents, coaches and volunteers that assisted the rowers and the team throughout the local season. It has been a big 3 terms, and we couldn’t have been a success without you all. THANK YOU also to our sponsors that help financially support our uniform. But this is still not the end. Our next regatta is the Queensland States Championships at Wyaralong Dam on the 14-16 September. 25 of our rowers will be heading south to verse up to 800 competitors from all over Queensland. We look forward to sharing the team’s success after the regatta.

Please support Shalom Rowing’s Father’s Day Raffle. We are fundraising for a new safety boat & outboard. Our current safety boats have been repaired too many times & we need to start replacing them. Safety boats are essential to our sport as rowing is considered a high risk sport, with each crew needing a coach & safety boat on the water with them. Please share with your family & friends. NAIDOC Week, which stands for National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee, happens every July and celebrates the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Better late than never, after a very busy term, we were finally able to celebrate in Week 6! After a bleak and damp week of weather, the sun graced us with its presence on Friday for our belated NAIDOC on the Grass event. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Shalom students took great pride in sharing their heritage and culture with the entire school community. Attendees enjoyed a barbecue featuring tasty kangaroo sausage and crocodile, as well as a special NAIDOC cake and delicious ice cream with traditional flavors. A group of our talented young artists collaborated to create a piece of artwork with the 2024 NAIDOC theme, “Blak, Loud and Proud – Keep the Fire Burning.” The colours in the artwork represented fire, the Shalom community, the grass and the sea, with everyone encouraged to leave a fingerprint on it, to commemorate our special day. Students also crafted their own unique keyrings using colored raffia grass, symbolizing the colors of both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
A big thank you to our enthusiastic and energetic special guests, that were in to play the didgeridoo, who set the fun vibe for both the Indigenous and non-Indigenous boys of Shalom College to ‘shake-a’leg’. Our First Nations girls also put on a beautiful performance, with a special ‘Welcome Dance.’
Thank you to everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, involved with making this a fun and memorable day for our Shalom community.

The QATSIF Scholarship Program was established to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families with additional educational options and enhanced life opportunities. It offers support for the costs associated with senior studies, with the goal of encouraging students to remain in school during their final years. This initiative recognizes the historical challenges that Indigenous students have encountered in terms of retention and achievement compared to their non-Indigenous peers.
After colonization, Indigenous Australians engaged in a variety of occupations, including farming, mining, stock work, road construction, irrigation, domestic tasks, gardening, pearling, and fishing. Despite their significant contributions and the rightful expectation of payment, many Indigenous workers did not receive wages for their efforts. These unpaid wages are often referred to as 'stolen wages.' In some cases, the wages were placed in trust funds that Indigenous people could not access, while in other situations, they were compensated with rations like food and clothing instead of actual wages. The aim here is not to linger on the past but to encourage understanding and provide perspective.
QATSIF is a not-for-profit trust managed by The Public Trustee of Queensland. The funding it utilizes is derived from the interest generated on the initial contributions that established the QATSIF Trust. QATSIF is dedicated to honouring the sacrifices of our Elders and Ancestors, particularly those affected by the grave injustice of Stolen Wages. By safeguarding these funds, we ensure that the efforts and sacrifices of previous generations will continue to support future ones and create a lasting positive legacy.
The QATSIF graduation ceremony for the Bundaberg region took place at CQUni on Friday, August 2nd. We were delighted to celebrate with our Year 12 2024 QATSIF Scholarship recipients and our team members: Valli Mitchelson, Shaun Hobson, Fleur Supplice, Talitha Cattell, and Mr. McMahon.
A big congratulations to the following graduating Year 12 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students: Kaleb A, Rhani D, Chloe E, Bella G, Daniel H, Ella H, Jorja J, Lailani J, Harry L, Hunter L, Savannaha M, Lily-Rose O, Keiarna S, Preston W.

The Bridge of Retrospect
By Lillian T.
The Bridge of Retrospect The air is warm and buttery, with picturesque meadows adorned with honeyed flowers emanating saccharine aromas that tickle your nose. You spy a waterfall nearby that glistens enchantingly alongside gigantic sequoia trees and mushrooms that shoot into the sky, disappearing into the clouds above. Wow, you think you could really see anything from up there. You giggle eagerly at the thought. The whole setting seems to radiate some sort of sorcery, and a sense of lushness and fruitful verdancy. Magic.
The fertile plants and the ever-enchanting aura draw you in, pulling you closer, begging you to eat the tantalizingly juicy fruits and pick the almost angelic flowers. But something else seems to draw you in more.
A simple bridge, so plain and dull, made of depressingly colourless bricks of stone that makes the utopia around it seem ten times more vibrant. Strangely, your chest tightens, and your heart seems to beat faster, making your instincts scream louder. Something seems to be calling you, but waiting for you to answer, like it’s holding its breath. A small part of you questions whether you should sate your curiosity.
You look back at the giant trees, the flowers, and the fruits of this paradise tentatively, then turn back to the bridge. A plaque anoints one of the low, ridged walls: The Bridge of Retrospect. You’re too young to know what that word means so you simply shrug and with a deep breath, you step onto its grey surface.
The journey started well, and you’re happy enough skipping across the bridge, eyes roaming the rich amount of life and beauty around you. You’re beginning to like this.
After some time, you get somewhat tired and your jovial pace has been reduced to a lazy stroll but still you admire the scenery and luscious abundance of flora and fauna in the distance, getting further and further away, and you notice the bridge slowly ascending in an uphill slope, getting steeper and steeper, making it harder and harder to waddle up.
Suddenly, you trip over a brick jutting out at a jagged, jarring angle, and you stumble onto lifeless, lacklustre land. Confusion washes over you in chilling waves as you realise that you can no longer see the utopia you just knew; instead, ugly, gnarly roots are spread throughout the coarse dirt like the black-blooded veins now carrying an epiphany through your being.
You look behind you at the Bridge of Retrospect and you finally understand. Though you wish more than anything to go back, it no longer calls you and you no longer know the wide-eyed, wonderstruck ingenue you were all that time ago. Because although you feel as though only minutes have passed, you catch your reflection in a pond of scummy water nearby and recoil at the face of a weary, wistful woman and it makes it real.
You are not the child you once were, and you’ll never know the innocent magic of childhood again.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to ser
ve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given. This concludes the weekend of September 14 & 15.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love
respectfully, with all people”.
