Happy Birthday to us!! On Friday evening we will celebrate 40 wonderful years of Shalom. Anniversaries are a chance to reflect on highs and lows. In the life of this College there have been both but, I am very confident that the highs have outweighed the lows. ‘Standing on the shoulders of those who’ve gone before us’, is a phrase that captures how history and culture get built. Shalom began as a bit of a gamble. A new school, combining Loyola Girls’ College with Christian Brothers Bundaberg, was a risk. Many at the time thought the site of Shalom was too far from town. The only thing here at the time of confirming the decision was an oval that had been hacked out of the bush by students and staff from CBC. Locals like Jim Thorn, John Santalucia, Jim Stephenson and many others did a lot of the hard work involved.
Friday evening there will be a fairly informal function to which all are welcome. Link to tickets –
https://www.trybooking.com/CVDVSEntertainment will be provided by some of our many talented Musicians. There won’t be a lot of formality and most will centre on a documentary of our history that has been prepared over the last few months by our AV and Marketing teams. It will be a great resource for the College.
Work Experience – an increasing number of our students, via our Pathways team, choose to use some of their vacation time doing Work Experience. This is not limited to trades and many find it a great opportunity to explore future employment opportunities in blue collar or white collar work. Keiarna S is one of our Year 12 students. I listened to Keiarna interview, on ABC radio where she was doing Work Experience, another of our Year 12 students, Lucy H, who had recently been chosen to Captain the Australian Womens’ Under 19 Cricket team. For someone, who admittedly, didn’t know a lot about cricket, Keiarna asked some excellent questions and had obviously done her homework. Well done both. Contact the Pathways office if your child might be interested in having a crack at some Work Experience.
The Catholic Parents Association is very keen to get feedback on our schools from parents. It would be great if you could invest ten minutes of your time to complete this survey. Scan the QR code on the flyer to access the survey. All completely anonymous.

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Edmund Rice Camp
The annual Edmund Rice Camp was held in the second week of the holidays, with 23 of our current senior students joining numerous past students to put on a camp to remember. The ‘Big Buddies’ worked hard to ensure that their ‘Little Buddy’ had an amazing time. Activities this year included a trip to the pool, a ride on the train at the Botanical Gardens, tie dying and a Talent Show. Once again, the camp was a wonderful living example of how the College continues the work of Blessed Edmund Rice in our local community.
Year 11 Retreat
In the last week of Term 3 the Year 11 cohort travelled to Alexandra Headlands for a three-day retreat. The retreat program, as in previous years, was facilitated by Michael Fitzpatrick. The Year 11 students engaged in the planned activities and discussions with a wonderful attitude. Many of the students went well outside of their usual comfort zone and they have all returned ready to embrace the role of student leaders.
St Vincent de Paul
Do you want to make a difference in the community? You’re invited to join the St Joseph’s Online Conference (St Vincent de Paul Group). They are taking expressions of interest from anyone throughout the Diocese. Meetings are monthly, online via Microsoft Teams. Training will be provided. Christina M is an awesome Rice House Leader and a wonderful member of RICE PC 1. Last term, Christina shaved her head for the Ponytail project to raise money for Cancer. She constantly goes out of her way to help anyone and always shows the utmost respect for her teachers, peers, and parents. As a House leader, she shows a high level of initiative and puts her hand up to assist with anything and everything and nothing is every too much trouble for her to handle. Congratulations Christina, you are a wonderful role model to your peers at Shalom College.

All Schools Basketball – Shalom Open Girls
Day 1: The team lost a close first up game against Lourdes Hill 31-29 but bounced back in the afternoon to defeat Redlands 47-33.
Day 2: The team defeated Sheldon in their final pool game 56-44. This placed them 2nd in their pool. In the afternoon cross-over game, Shalom played Calamvale, going down 34-28.
Day 3: Was a day of mixed emotions. The team defeated Dakabin 49-44 in a nail-biter only to lose a close game to St Columbans 30-26. Shalom will play off for 11th/12th in the final game on Day 4. On a side note, the St Columbans team was coached by former Shalom student and Basketball guru - Caitlin Clancy.
The final day of the CSBQ tournament saw Shalom taking on Capalaba for 11th/12th in Division 2 of the Open Girls competition. In a see-sawing affair, the Shalom girls could not hold on and went down fighting 48 - 34.
The girls had a great week and with a very young team (only two Year 12s), they gained plenty of experience for future years.
Thanks heaps to our score-bench officials (you know who you are!!) and also to our 'super-coach' Mrs Giles, for all the trainings and time you have put into this wonderful bunch of young women.
Finally, thanks goes to our sponsors, Bundaberg Smash Repairs, Hallstone Constructions and Hinkler Podiatry for their wonderful support. Bring on 2025!!!
Lawn Bowls National Championships
Congratulations to Phoebe R on her School Sport Australia Bronze Medal. Phoebe was part of the Queensland Schools Lawn Bowls team that finished 3rd at the National Championships played in Geelong over the holidays. Phoebe ‘skipped’ the triples and fours. Phoebe was also awarded the 'Spirit of the Tournament' for the Queensland team. Awesome achievement Phoebe!!
Lifesaving World Championships
Kobi H recently competed at the 2024 Lifesaving World Championships on the Gold Coast, where he raced for his Club, Currumbin SLSC, as part of Youth (18 years and under) Interclub Competition, which involved 6 days of competition - 3 days in the surf and on the beach, and 3 days in the pool.
Kobi came away with 5 World Championships' medals, including:
- Gold - Youth 4 x 50m Mixed Pool Lifesaver Relay
- Silver - Youth Male 4 x 25m Manikin Carry Relay
- Silver - SERC
- Bronze - Youth Male Rescue Tube Rescue Race
- Bronze - Youth Male 4 x 50m Obstacle Relay
Individually, Kobi also performed exceptionally well, including making several finals at the World Championships, with other results including:
- 4th - Youth Male 100m Rescue Medley
- 5th - Youth Male 4 x 50m medley Relay
- 7th - Youth Oceanman Relay
- 9th (1st in B Final) - Youth Male 50m Manikin Carry
- 9th (1st in B Final) - Youth Male 200m Super Lifesaver
- Final - Youth Male Surf Race
- Semi Final - Youth Male Board Race
- Semi Final - Youth OceanMan (Ironman)
Kobi's club, Currumbin SLSC, also won the overall pointscore in the Youth Pool Rescue, and were a very close second in the Overall Youth Combined Pointscore (Ocean, beach and pool combined).
Aarj D was also competing at the World Championships, and despite his age and having to race against boys that were up to 18 years of age, he did extremely well to make the Semi Final of the Youth Male Surf Race, and finish 3rd in the B Final of the Youth Male Board Rescue.
Queensland Championship Regatta Oarsome Success
During the September school holidays, 20 of our rowers took on the best in the state in the Queensland Championships Regatta. Over 870 athletics competed from 50 different schools.
Our lead up to the biggest regatta of the year, was less than ideal. The first 5 weeks of the term, the pontoons in the town reach were removed to be fixed. This resulted in lots of ergo & gym sessions. Once the pontoons were back in, we then had heavy rain resulting in flood warnings and no training again. We started back in our regular training routine only three weeks before States. The regatta was also meant to be held at Rockhampton but due to flooding in the Fitzroy River, this resulted in the course being washed down the river. The venue then got changed 2 weeks out to Wyaralong Dam, inland from Gold Coast.
Despite all the adversity, we triumphed & got our BEST RESULTS EVER!!! 13 crews made the semis, 9 crews made finals & 3 crews got GOLD!!! We also gained 6th overall against all the big fancy Brisbane schools. Biggest congratulations to all our rowers on their effort & commitment leading up to this final regatta.
Our outstanding Finals results over the 3 days included:

The excitement of the regatta continued on the way home with our boat trailer being involved in a carjacking incident near the Nambour exit. Thanks to Nick, our driver and his quick decision-making skills with a heavy boat trailer on the back. Everyone is safe, bad guy in jail, but one of our doubles didn’t survive to tell the tale with a big hole and damage all the way down from a door being open into it. That will be a fun story to tell for years to come.
THANK YOU again to all the coaches, parents and volunteers that made these events possible. Also, to our sponsors that helped us purchase our uniforms. The rowers looked oarsome on the water. The States regatta brings an end to our school season for rowing. We are still training for fun and fitness and are keen to get new rowers onboard ready for next year. Look out for our come and try sessions later in the term. Week 6 we will have sessions available for current students and also in Week 7 for any Year 6s that are interested in trying a new sport in high school. More details to come.

QSSTT State Finals Year 7-9 Wrap-Up
Congratulations to the Shalom Year 7-9 boys and girls who represented the College at the QSSTT State Finals on 13-14 September in Rockhampton. This competition is always tough, playing the best schools from each region in Queensland, including many Tennis Schools of Excellence. Ths year was even tougher, however, as some of the traditionally weaker country regions such as North Queensland, South West and Far North Queensland did not enter teams. Our players showed the usual mix of competitiveness and sportsmanship typical of Shalom representatives.
The boys team were dealt a blow with the talented Jai P falling ill and unable to play. Fortunately, Shalom was lucky to have a very capable replacement in Gabe K, who joined the talented Jack B, vastly improved Nic C and ever-energetic Jake W in taking on the best of Queensland. Each player showed fantastic application against tough opposition improving with each match finishing with a Bronze Medal in the Country Championship. Well done boys.
The girl's team of Amelia W, Indi D, Megan C, Harmoni M, Bryana C and Kayla C battled some equally tough opposition, also finishing with a Bronze Medal in the Country Championship. Amelia W led from the front for the girls, playing some exceptionally consistent tennis, losing only one singles match in the tournament, even when she was playing number one - an outstanding performance. With all these girls in Year 7, with the exception of Megan, the future is bright for the Shalom girl's tennis team.
One of the best things about this tournament is we are witness to the best tennis players in the State in this age division, which is inspiring for our players. Add in a pizza party, trip to the waterpark as well as some great company, this was a very fun and successful trip. Thank you to Mrs Paulsen and all the parents (and grandparents) who came along. Hopefully we wil get to do this again in future years.
Tennis - Finals Day
Congratulations to all Shalom players who participated in Finals Day at Shalom on the 10 September. The day was a fantastic day played in great spirit. Shalom comprised 5 of the 8 teams that qualified for Finals Day - an amazing achievement.
The Grand Final of Division A was taken out by Shalom Black. Lachlan C, the ever reliable Shalom legend, led the way with a tough 6-4 win in his singles, followed by Xander W playing some clever tennis to win his singles 6-3. Jack B teamed with Lachlan C in the doubles to cement the win, defending the title from last year. The talented Shalom Red team (Lachlan R, Edi R and Amelia W) defeated a spirited Shalom Blue team (Harry K, Lara B and Indi D) to take out third place with Shalom Red coming fourth. To have three of the top 4 teams is testament to the depth of talent we are so lucky to have at Shalom.
The double was completed in Division B in an all-Shalom Grand Final. Shalom Black (Gabriel K, Kallam W, Tokoko W, Blake W and Alex M) continued the dominance they displayed throughout the season defeating a competitive Shalom Red (Kayla C, Bryana C, Isaac T, Harmoni M) to finish first and second in this division. The skill on offer in this division was impressive and some of these players will be promoted to Division A next year if their rapid rate of improvement continues.
Special mention must go to our Year 12 legends of Lachlan C and Lachlan R, along with Zain A who did not play this season. These Year 12 boys have been the cornerstone of Shalom's tennis teams since Year 7, winning the school tennis most years, making many representative teams between them along with winning the Inter-School QSSTT event every year. The talent these young men have displayed as well as the fantastic spirit they bring has been an example to us all. Thank you boys - this is the end of a golden era and you will be sorely missed.
Touch - Queensland All Schools
Congratulations to the Six Shalom Touch Football teams for representing the College so well last week.
Special mention to our 15 Girls team and our Open boys teams for going through to the finals where our 15 Girls team defeated TCC in their round 16 finals game to progress to the top 8 game, where a Brisbane State High team was too strong.
Our Open Boys team played Ignatius Park in their top 16 finals game and fought hard but went down in a good game.
Our other four teams played well but didn't make the finals.
Thanks so much to all the players, coaches, managers, referees, bus drivers, support staff and parents for a good carnival.
Thanks also to our referees, Miranda, Byron and Jameison.
It was a pleasure taking these coaches, managers, referees, support staff and students away on this sporting trip.
A credit to the school and their parents.
State Schoolgirl Rugby League Championships - Wide Bay Representatives

Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained." - Marie Curie
And so, we begin another term at Shalom and the final for 2024. This term is a time for reflection on the year that was, and contemplation and planning for the new year to come.
We continue our celebration of the literary talents of our Shalom students with the winner of the year 11-12 Poetry division of the Shalom Literary Wonders writing competition: Callum M.
Callum captures the magic in a soulful narrative of the groundbreaking scientific discoveries of Nobel-prize winning, Polish-born, French physicist, Marie Curie. Marie’s work focused on her discovery and use of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to x-ray technology and finding treatments for cancer.
On 4 July 1934, at the age of 66, Marie Curie died. The cause of her death was given as aplastic pernicious anaemia, a condition she developed after years of exposure to radiation through her work.
Curie‘s Magic
By Callum M. (Winner Yr. 11-12 Poetry)
A room of darkness,
A room of cold,
A room where the delightful may unfold.
They twinkle in the night like tiny fireflies,
Only more sinister than meets the eye.
She sat in a place where her beloved used to be,
His eyes are somehow dreamy: moral and free.
Only the presence of his absence seemed different,
But the tone of death sent a tone of belligerent.
Lights of bright,
Lights of dark,
Lights suddenly turning on like a floodlight.
If only she had known,
If only she cared,
That what she did would someday leave her dead.
A prize of honour couldn’t be worth,
A lifetime of discovery that only led to the worst.
In a dance of atoms, she could only find delight,
As radiant whispers swept through the night,
Tiny forces, secret and grand,
Those which could be touched by her very hand.
The glows were enchanting, bringing pure surprise,
A magic of science beaming off the lens of her eyes,
Each minuscule spark comprises a tale to unfold,
An image of knowledge and power, fierce and bold.
So, we remember the cost and the magic she gave,
In a room of darkness, in a scientist’s cave.
Where shadows of wisdom and courage converge,
In a timeless dance, Curie’s magic continues to surge.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
