I just take it for granted now that when I buy anything online, I will miraculously have appear on my Facebook or Instagram feeds, numerous similar or like products. How does my Social Media feed know what I buy? We all just live with that ‘invasion of our space’ now and accept it. I was pleased to see last week that Governments have announced that they will ban children under 16 years of age, getting on Social Media. That is a good thing but like all things ‘banned’, it will be easier said than done. We ban those under 18s on Licensed premises but that still seems to occur. There are some profoundly damaging aspects of Social Media for young people. We have all seen the carnage done by bullies online.
“I have no words.
I was not aware of Ella’s story nor her passing when I posted about ‘catfishing’ last night.
Let me say this.
This is NOT on schools.
It is on you and me.
It’s on PARENTS.
Handing over those (expletive) devices and social media and having no idea the harm our kids are causing others.
Stop telling me you trust your kids.
Stop telling me they can handle social media.
They CANNOT.
Stop telling me “I trust my child. I don’t need their password to check what they’re doing online. That would be an invasion of their privacy.
PLEASE.
Ella was just 12
TWELVE.
Our kids are harming each other. They are wrecking havoc because they are kids with NO judgement and on understanding of consequences. This is not on the kids – it’s on US, the adults in the room."
Remembrance Day – if you’ve driven through the north and west of France, it is impossible to miss the countless grave yards with row after row of white headstones for the young men who lost their lives in the ‘War to end all Wars’. It is a stark reminder of the madness of war. We remember them and the so many other innocent victims of war today. As we do that, we’re conscious of the growing threats in our region and others of the conflicts raging now and the ones that are threatening to come. If we want peace, let’s all work very hard for justice.
Parking & Pick Up – parents please remember that the only places you can collect your child in the afternoons is from the main carpark and the Eggmolesse Car park. No student pick up from the Sports Centre carpark or the Tennis court car park or the edges of Br Hogan Drive. I appreciate this means queuing to collect your child. If you leave it 20 minutes, there is no queue.

Learning Attributes Yr 7/8 Rotation Subjects – Published Week 6
A reminder that in 2024, Shalom College has changed the way we give feedback on ‘learning attributes’ of our students to parents. Please note that the upcoming End-of-Semester Report cards will no longer show Application and Behaviour as a result.
Instead, teachers have been giving feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes. These learning attributes will be published throughout Week 6 in Term 4 for the Yr7/8 rotation subjects that occur in this term only. All other subjects have published the learning attributes throughout the year and are updating them as necessary.
Yr 11 Exam Block – 20 November – 22 November
Yr 11 students will participate in an exam block from Wednesday 20 - Friday 22 November. Students participating in this exam block will begin Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
Year 10 End of Semester Two Examinations – 20 November – 22 November
Yr 10 students will participate in an exam block from Wednesday 20 - Friday 22 November. All students are expected to be at school for the whole day on Wednesday 20 November.
All students in 10MA04 Specialist Maths and 10SC02 Science are expected to be at school for the whole day on Thursday 21 November.
Students who do not have outstanding assessment or supplementary exams are permitted to stay home on Friday 22 November.
Students should expect to sit outstanding examinations and complete other outstanding assessment tasks at the direction of class teachers in any available examination session during the examination block, including the following week if necessary (Monday 25 - Friday 29 November).

Giving Tree
The annual ‘Giving Tree’ Assembly is coming up this Thursday 14 November.
This event is always a highlight of the year. All students and staff are asked to give what they can, by bringing in an unwrapped toy, gift card, or cash donation. The proceeds of this event benefits two organisations each Christmas. Firstly, contributions are distributed to those in need in our local community by the St Vincent de Paul Society. Secondly, as we have done in recent years, some of the gifts are taken to Woorabinda Mission to assist Sister Cecilia’s work in that community.

The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Schools Blood Drive has finished for another year, and our school has been busy saving lives! Since August 1, members of the Shalom College Lifeblood Team have made 34 lifesaving blood donations, making us the fifth highest contributing school in the drive! We helped more than 100 people through these donations. Some of our fabulous Shalomie donors have given blood more than 500 times!!!
Just because the blood drive is finished doesn’t mean we’re going to stop donating, and with Christmas coming up Lifeblood needs plenty of new donors in the Bundaberg region. If you’d like to join our school blood donation community, you can visit lifeblood.com.au, or download the Donate Blood app, register, and make an appointment at the Bundaberg Donor Centre, located on the Bundaberg Hospital grounds. Make sure you join our Lifeblood Team too, by clicking ‘My Account’ and choosing Shalom College Bundaberg as your Team. You just need to be over 18 to donate.
Lifeblood will need more than 100,000 new blood donors by the end of next year, to ensure that we have enough blood to provide to patients in need. Behind every blood donation there’s a reason for donating, why not find yours?

2024 saw our first Melbourne Cup Day fundraiser and it was hoof-loads of fun! Teachers wore fabulous fashion and strut their stuff in the Sports Centre. All of this frolicking-fun raised money for Racing Hearts - a charity organisation dedicated to helping ex-race horses help people through equine therapy.
Mr. Bond did a fabulous ad-lib job hosting the fashion parade and we had a late, impromptu entry from the sun-safe Mrs. Giles!
Students cheered and clapped for their favourite outfits and cute-horsey themed prizes were handed out for the lucky door raffle.
The standard is now set and 2025 can only be bigger, better and fancier!!!
Thank you to students and staff for donating their time, efforts and dollarbucks for this worthy cause!

When sitting in the meeting for our English/Library collaborative committee meeting last Thursday morning, tossing around ideas for projects and events for 2025, I realised how lucky Shalom students are. Energetic and enthusiastic staff want to offer education in much more innovative ways than when I was young.
Learning can happen on many different levels and in many different ways, and some are more effective for some than others. If the student is engaged then he or she will reap some reward from an activity, how much is only really hindered or helped by their level of commitment – and their teacher’s.
Massive amounts of study have gone into effective teaching techniques and theory, but at the end of the day the connection between the teacher and the student is the most important component for success. Similarly, school library staff can contribute to a young person’s propensity to engage in reading. Curating collections that are exciting and relevant is the first step, working as a team with teachers is another!
The Shalom Literary Committee has great plans to grow and strengthen and offer students more opportunities in 2025 and in the years to come.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
