One of my favourite all time movies is the Australian classic, ‘The Castle’. Towards the end of the movie, Darryl’s bumbling solicitor, Dennis Denuto is seen enjoying his newfound fame and publicity after helping Darrly keep his home, polishing a new brass plate on the front of his office which read, ‘Dennis Denuto, Solicitor, ‘as seen on TV’! I’m not wanting to ‘big note’ myself, but I was recently seen on ‘A Current Affair’. ACA asked to interview me in regard to Government initiatives around Social Media for young people. I didn’t say anything in that interview that any educator in Australia could not have said just as well. We all know that with the benefits of Social Media come some significant pitfalls.
Enrolments 2025 – we would really appreciate parents advising us as soon as is possible, if your child won’t be returning to Shalom in 2025. Quite a number of families are waiting on positions as they become available.

Giving Tree Wrap Up
Thank you once again to our wonderful College community for the generosity on display at the Giving Tree Assembly. Besides the array of toys that featured in last week’s newsletter, we also had approximately $3200 in cash and $2500 in gift cards donated. This generosity will greatly benefit our local community. St Vincent de Paul are best placed to ensure our donations get to those with genuine needs this Christmas. Over the last few days, some of our Year 9 students have had an opportunity to assist Vinnies staff with sorting all the donated toys into categories. Following this, they had the opportunity to select toys to be packaged for individual children who will receive them as gifts this Christmas. This has been beneficial for the Shalom students who demonstrated empathy and care in how they selected the gifts for vulnerable young people in our local community.

Indee B has emerged as a quiet achiever during her two years at Shalom and we would like to celebrate her contribution to Damien House. Academically Indee always works well with her teachers to excel in her classes. Indee always involves herself energetically and enthusiastically in House activities and has a wonderful sense of humour! Indee’s kindness and care for others, as well as her commitment to Damien House make her worthy of commendation as this week’s quiet achiever.

Shalom Cricket
Congratulations to Shalom students (and staff) Sophie S, Jessica A, Eloise C and Mr Simon Gills who attended the 13-15yrs Girls Cricket State Championships in Ipswich recently. The three girls were part of the Wide Bay team that finished 7th. Mr Gills was a QLD Official/Selector for the carnival.
Shalom Surf Life Saving
Recently the Shalom Surf Life Saving team competed in the annual Wide Bay Schools Surf Carnival at Bargara. The Shalom students performed brilliantly all day, claiming the ‘Water events’ trophy and the Champion School Trophy. Congratulations to the three Shalom Age Champions, Ethan G (13yrs), Aarj D (15yrs) and Freddie C (16+yrs). Thanks also to Mrs Giles, Mrs Moller, Mr Stranieri, Mr Crowley and Mr Gills for attending as team officials, event officials and water safety.
Shalom Hockey
Congratulations to Shalom students Ethan K (U16), Courtney K (U14) & Sophie A (U14), who all gained selection in QLD Indoor Hockey teams over the past month. Gabrielle A (U16) was named a shadow.
The QLD Indoor teams will compete in their respective National Championships held in Canberra in January 2025.
This is a wonderful achievement to have so many selected in QLD Indoor Hockey teams considering the sport is so small in this community and Bundaberg players have to compete against much stronger centers with many more players and far greater indoor experience.

In Term 4 Students from Year 11 Religion and Ethics classes engaged in practical learning experiences to develop the skills and dispositions necessary to help them live and work successfully in a complex and rapidly changing world.
In partnership with the St Vincent de Paul Society and under the guidance of Vinnies Youth Coordinator Michael Siccama, 8 classes of students rotated through a diverse range of activities across a total of 55 lessons. These activities ranged from sorting clothing and donations for sale, rag-cutting or export, pricing items and setting them out for display in the retail area, testing games and batteries to ensure they were in saleable condition and unpacking items for the Christmas season.
It was amazing to see the students respond so positively to their experience. So many of them really thrived at implementing skills that we rarely see in the classroom: their wonderful customer service, quick sorting ability, their wonder at the huge variety of clothing styles available (especially for women) and at how few men’s clothes are donated. Many students even learned simple skills such as how to fold clothes! They really did have fun but also provided much valuable help to Vinnies, who were desperately short of volunteers at this time of the year.
A huge thank you to Michael and Vinnies for joining with us to provide this experience, to Mr McMahon and Shalom drivers for the procession of bus trips to and from the venue and to the students themselves for so whole-heartedly participating in the different activities with such positive attitudes. They really did bond and most of the lessons involved a lot of camaraderie and laughter, as well as good work. What a lovely way to finish the year!

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
