Principal's Reflection
Much has been written this week about the death of Muhammad Ali. A couple of months ago, I watched the movie, 'Ali' based on his life. He was a much more interesting character than just 'the boxer'. He was no saint but he made some pretty principled decisions in his life and was prepared to cop the consequences of those. He showed that courage comes in many forms. Courtesy of the Courier Mail last week, we have a few of Ali's quotes on life which I think speak for themselves – Muhammad Ali - On Life
- The service you do for others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.
- The man who has no imagination has no wings.
- He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.
- If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it - then I can achieve it.
- A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.
The Continually Challenging World of Social Media and the Internet
In all my years working with young people there have been lots of changes but, at the same time, so many similarities. Young people are still inquisitive, exuberant, energetic and engaging. It is why teaching is such a wonderful vocation. The one area that is different and has made my job so much harder is when Social Media and the Internet is used badly. It would seem that no matter how many times we tell young people that absolutely nothing on the internet is private, they don't believe us. I have heard too many times the line from young people that, 'but I only sent it to my best friend who would never share it with anyone!' Again, I would encourage parents to put some time in to get to understand how Social Media platforms operate. One of the popular ones for young people is 'Snapchat'. Photos or videos can be posted to 'Snapchat' and will disappear after ten seconds. I'm sure there might be some good uses for this but one thing I know that it does do is to encourage young people to post something really inappropriate feeling safe in the knowledge that there won't be any evidence of the post after ten seconds. Police services will tell you that this is not the case. If your child is a Snapchat user, it might be worth a conversation about how and why it is used.
The Addams Family Musical
Not sure what else to say but 'Wow!!'. The staff and students who participated in this will feel justifiably proud of a stunning effort. It was a wonderful event for the College and I haven't met anyone who saw it who wasn't thoroughly impressed. Well done all.
Year 9 Girls
The dress that was introduced for Year 7 and 8 girls last year will become an option for girls moving into Year 10 and beyond from 2017.
Head of the River
The Regatta held last weekend was a fantastic culmination to a big season. The students and their coaches were fantastic and there was a wonderful spirit among the team. Congratulations to St Luke's who retained the trophy by a slim 14 points. Mr Rod Silcox, Mr Simon Gills and so many others deserve a huge thank you from the College for all the effort that went into this year's Head of the River event.
Composting Facility
In the NewsMail last weekend there was a report on the reaction from local residents to the proposed composting facility at the end of Kay McDuff Drive. When I became aware of this facility I contacted the Bundaberg Regional Council and the State Government and raised some concerns over the possibility of odours, dust and noise being generated by this facility and the possible impact on Shalom. The Bundaberg Regional Council arranged a visit last Friday to the site where the composting is done currently. I believe we had a very comprehensive tour of the facility and were given a clear understanding of how the process works. At the end of the tour, my concerns about this proposal were allayed. There was no smell and little or no dust generated because of the water used in the process of decomposition. The facility will only use 'Green Waste'. I am as comfortable as I can be that this facility will have no adverse impact on Shalom.
World Education Program - WEP
Share a slice of your life this July - Host a WEP exchange student!
Welcoming an Italian or French-speaking exchange student to your family is rewarding in so many ways. You can share your family's Aussie way of life with a student from another culture, connect to your community in exciting new ways, and bring the world into your home. And for the student you welcome into your family, you're providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience they'll treasure forever.
It's the Simple Things!
For our exchange students, it's the little things that make their stay so memorable: trying Vegemite for the first time, attending our high school, seeing a kangaroo, koala or cockatoo. Hosting an exchange student doesn't take anything fancy - just a warm, welcoming spirit and the love you'd give to your own family.
WEP is currently looking for families interested in inviting an Italian or French-speaking exchange student this July. If this is of interest to your family, please contact Sylvia Kelly at WEP today to receive detailed program and student information: www.wep.org.au , sylviakelly@wep.org.au , 1300 884 733

Issue of Year 7 to 9 End of Semester One Reports to be Delayed
Unfortunately, the publication of Year 7 to 9 end of Semester One reports will be delayed until Friday 22 July 2016. We are currently working on an improved reporting format but have run into some minor technical problems in setting this up. However, please be assured that the new end of semester format will more fully exploit the data available to us through the Learning Management System (LMS) and include much more information for parents and students. The new format will be standardised across all year levels and will include for each student a full page of data per subject. A sample is included below for your information.
Year 11 and 12 end of Semester One Examinations
End of Semester One examinations commence this week. The examination timetable has been posted on the College intranet ('Assessment & Reporting' tab), the College website (Curriculum/Senior School/Forms and Publications) and Daily Notices (pushed to students via Student Café). Most students will have at least one examination during the block, some will have quite a number depending on the subjects they study and how assessment is conducted in these subjects. Not all subjects use the examination block.
While most students will have only a few examinations during the examination block which will give them some time in between to prepare, rest and study, others may have up to six examinations during the examination block and even two examinations in the one day. This can contribute to stress levels of all concerned, but the challenges can be managed through planning, prioritising and communication. In particular, students are encouraged to:
- adopt a systematic approach to the use of the examination timetable and the Record Book where the Annual Planner, Homework/Study Plan and daily Homework entries sections are effectively used to establish a study plan to manage time and prepare emotionally, physically and mentally for examinations (a student responsibility - supported and monitored by parents and teachers);
- make realistic choices about priorities and expectations that balance family, homework/study, extra-curricular school activities/responsibilities, sports and cultural activities, paid employment and personal/social interests (again, a student responsibility - supported and monitored by parents and teachers); and
- maintain contact with teachers, especially if things appear to be going wrong or if something unexpected happens that interrupts study plans or affects attendance at examinations (this is what 'special provision' is for).

Taking Care of Business
Business is literally booming at the college, especially for the Year 10 Business Enterprise class. This term, students have learnt about entrepreneurs and what it takes to create and run a business. So, what better way to learn than real life practical application of the knowledge and skills they have gained during this unit of work. The students put their skills of working in groups to the test and created four new business enterprises that will operate around the College over the next few weeks. Last week saw 'Los Churros' sell out (in record time) of their fabulous Spanish Donuts. Then 'Oz Dogs' produced piping hot, made to order Hot Dogs that were a hit with their customers. Each business had to compile a business plan that outlined how they were going to create and implement their business ideas. Stay tuned for our other business enterprise over the next few weeks.

This week we saw our Year 12 Certificate II Tourism students travel to Capricorn Caves in Rockhampton to complete the practical component of the qualification. Students engaged in adventure caving, abseiling, Indigenous studies with a local Elder, high ropes, rock wall climbing, visiting the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, manual fire making, spear throwing and even a survival knife making workshop! A MASSIVE thank you to Mrs Jacquie Smith who has taught Certificate II Tourism and our 'in school' Tourism subject at the same time and gave up her time to be with students at the camp. Another HUGE thank you to Mrs Cheryl Petersen, Shalom Campus Minister who also attended the camp as a support person and we cannot forget to give an ENORMOUS thank you to Mr Greg Aplin for driving the bus back and forth to Rockhampton.
Recently we have engaged a Year 11 student, Ali Giovannoni with a local community organisation, Angles Incorporated as their Youth Marketing Consultant. Ali will be helping this fantastic organisation with their marketing strategies and getting their name and good will out into the local community.
Angels Incorporated is working hard to open a local Youth Hub / Youth Vintage Clothing store and needs your help. Clean out your closet and donate your pre loved clothes (clean and in good condition please). Items can be left at my office in the Student Services Building during school hours. This will be an initiative UNSEEN before in Bundaberg and is a fantastic way to give back to the community.

Rowing
Last weekend marked the 24th annual Head of the River - held at the Bucca Rowing Course. A new system of racing was implemented this year, with the regatta being spread across two days instead of one. Massive congratulations to all the rowers, supporters and spectators the atmosphere and team spirit on the day was electrifying.
Day 1
Bright and early, our rowers assembled down at the Quay Street rowing sheds, already dressed in their Shalom colours. The boats were loaded, the oars were packed, the riggers stacked and the croc wearers shunned. Grey and gloomy clouds overhung as the heats commenced. Though Shalom persevered through the dreariness to come out with a two-point lead on St Luke's. First hand hearsay suggests this success was due to past rowing coordinator Mr West's surprise appearance.
Day 2
Sunday morning, finals day, it became clear that Jon Snow was on the money - winter had definitely come. Following a brief meeting, the war paint went on; with the amount of red, white and black of the rowers being challenged only by the man in the red suit himself…Mr Silcox. The weather improved as the day went on, with the voice of a 46 strong team echoing down the river as crews were cheered on. As racing drew to a close, celebration was in session. Congratulations to St Luke's on their Head of the River success and although we didn't get the win, we unquestionably showed some ticker and spirit; something our very own Br 'Rocky' Rochford is definitely proud of. However, we didn't go home empty handed, scoring the following:
- Laurie Zunker Memorial Trophy (Boys U16 Single) - Ethan Weder.
- Frank Axam Memorial Trophy (Girls Open Single) - Grace Toll.
- Arley Emerick Shield (Girls Open Coxed Four) - Juliet Newby, Aimee Harvey, Jessica Clements, Grace Toll and Taitum Staley (cox).
- Nev Cullen Bucket (Boys Eight) - Ashleigh Pole, Jonathon Evans, Rhys Scott, Benjamin Mingin, Samuel Pearson, Amos Hunter, Adam Coyne, Bryce Holliss and Grace Toll (cox).
- West Family Trophy (Girls Eight) - Lucy Bowden, Anna-Jane Vaschina, Briege Taske, Lana Amos, Juliet Newby, Aimee Harvey, Jessica Clements, Grace Toll and Courtney Bruce (cox).
- Vince Habermann Trophy - Rod Silcox.
A huge thank you to all of the coordinators and the Shalom Rowing Supporters Group, without them this event would not be possible.
