Science Week Activities
Year 11 UQ Science Ambassadors
Science week was celebrated during the week of Monday 14 – Friday 18 August. At Shalom College we held two celebrations at school. The theme for this year was Innovation: Powering Future Industries.
Shalom lunch time activity:
On Tuesday 15 August we celebrated science week with several fun activities out on the lawn with all students welcome to attend. The activities included a paper plane challenge, decorating cookies, binary code keychains and a brain break quiz with fantastic prizes. Students were also invited to write down their most innovative idea. Some crazy ideas were proposed:
- A biodegradable lip balm container that has a seed that can be grown into a plant
- Being able to talk to animals
- A machine to clone people
- Trees that can move - instead of being cut down they can get up and walk away
Overall everyone had a lot of fun, and ate a lot of cookies.
Wednesday Primary School Visits:
On Wednesday 16 August the Year 11 UQ Science Ambassador students hosted two primary schools. In period one, twenty-four St Joseph’s Year 6 six students attended and in period two, sixty-five very eager Year three and four students attended activities showcasing experiments in the science laboratories.
The experiments included: Making Elephant’s toothpaste, Flying teabags, Flame tests and Lava lamps to name a few. This provided students with an opportunity to embrace their science ambition. It encouraged them to explore science in the real world through hands on activities. We received the following enthusiastic feedback from these curious little science ambassadors.
