State Inter-School Chess Championships

Anatoly Karpov — 'Chess is everything: art, science, and sport.'

On Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 October, Shalom’s top chess team consisting of Callum M, Waylen , JJ W and Seth G travelled to St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace in Brisbane to compete in the prestigious State Inter-School Chess Championships. Shalom qualified for this event after winning the Wide Bay North Regional Finals in Term 3 and were competing against the winners of each region across Queensland – a huge challenge. To put this in context, there were schools competing who had FIDE Masters (Fide Rating > 2300) and Candidate Masters (Fide Rating >2200) which is very impressive for someone of high school age.

The Shalom team finished a creditable 18th out of 22 schools in the state and 5th in the regional schools. Waylen H (3 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses) and Callum M (2 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses) led the way with some determined performances, each only losing 2 of their 6 matches. Making this even more impressive was that they were our number 2 player and number 1 player respectively, therefore played some high-quality opponents. JJ W and Seth G also showed some impressive chess skills each with some good results against tough opponents. Congratulations to these boys on their excellent performances – hopefully we can do it all again next year.

Rugby League

Congratulations to Tom M and Mr Kaufusi (coach) for a wonderful result in the Queensland City vs Queensland Country U17 match in Brisbane during the recent holidays. The Queensland Country boys defeated Queensland City 13-12 in a nail-biter.

Mr Kaufusi was very happy with the team’s performance and applauded their efforts and tenacity in defeating a strong Queensland City side.
Tom was a standout player, turning in a strong defensive performance while also proving to be a handful with the ball in hand, running for a game high 199m on 17 carries.

Touch - QLD All Schools

Congratulations to the following teams that competed at the recent QLD All Schools Touch Football Carnival held on the Gold Coast.

The Open Girls Touch Team played really well, making it through to the final 16 games on Sunday out of 88 teams in the division. We won all our games and lost one game, placing second in our pool, with a high for and against, which allowed us to progress to the finals. All girls played well lead by captain Zoe S. Thanks to our Manager - Miss Jess Richards, Assistant Coach - Mr Ainsley Driver and Coach - Mr Peter Robinson.

The Open Boys Touch Team put in some strong performances in a very tough pool.

From their 6 games, the team had 2 impressive wins (12-0 & 6-0), but went down in their other games (including a respectable 6-1 loss to the eventual Open Boys Champions). The boys can be proud of their efforts, particularly considering a number of players were quite new to the sport. The whole team showed great teamwork and spirit throughout the carnival, led by captain and Players’ Player, Jomar G. Thanks to our Manager – Mrs Sarah Driver and Coach – Mr Graham O’Shanesy. Thanks to Mrs Mel Klowss for preparing all the delicious meals for the team and also to Bus Driver/First Aid Officer – Mr Joe O’Driscoll. Special thanks to Shalom Touch Coordinator – Mr Peter Robinson, for his time and effort organising this trip.

The Under 15s Boys team also played really well with 88 teams in their age group.
The boys came 3rd in a very tight pool winning 4 games and narrowly falling short in 2, just missing the finals. All the boys played well, lead by captain – Tahj C.
Thanks to our Manager – Mr Adam Booth and Coach – Mr Rob Bailey-Rasmussen.
Special thanks to Mr Peter Robinson for all the hard work leading in to the tournement.

Congratulation to the Under 15 Girls who played outstandingly.  The girls won 6 out of 7 games, finishing second in their pool. Unfortunately, the girls did not progress forward, finishing in the top 30 out of 112 teams. This is a remarkable result.
All the girls played well, led by their captains, Mia K, Kate M and their warmup captain Courtney D.  Thanks to our coach Miss Riley Dingle our managers – Ms Kelly Jenkins and Ms Tressa Marano and a massive thank you to Pauline Churchill (Parent) for organising all the food for the girls.

Congratulations to the girls who received the following awards:
Mia K – Coaches Award
Kate M – Players Player
Stevey H – Most Improved Award.
