Queensland Schools Table Tennis Championships – Bundaberg Round

On Saturday 5 November, two teams from Shalom competed in the Bundaberg round of the Queensland Schools Table Tennis Championships.

Sisters Hannah (Year 9) and Christina (Year 7 – Christina played up an age group)  formed our Girls Junior Division team. Playing in a round robin against female and male teams, they were undoubtedly the stronger of the two girls teams competing as they won many matches and challenged the boys teams. Although still strong, they unfortunately did not play their best against the opposing girls team from St Lukes, going down by the narrowest of margins three matches (8 games) to two (7 games). All matches went to three games, with many going beyond 11 points – a very close contest. This meant that the girls took silver on the day, but still qualified to be able to compete in the State Championships.

Our Boys Junior team consisted of Will (Year 9) and Lincoln (Year 7 – Lincoln also played up an age group).  Lincoln demonstrated his strength as a player by losing only two games for the entire tournament! The boys did not lose to any opposition in the round games, and progressed as top of their group to the finals. In the semi-final, they overcame a spirited Bundaberg State High School three matches to one, which set them up to play Bundaberg Christian College in the final.  Lincoln played first, claiming victory in two games. Will followed and played exceptionally well in two very close, nail-biting matches. Both matches went to three games, with Will often behind and having to fight back, showing a fantastic level of maturity and patience. Amazingly, the boys claimed overall victory in just three matches.

Both teams now qualify to compete at the State Championships in Brisbane on Friday 2 December. Congratulations to all four players for their high level of ability, exceptional behaviour, and fantastic sportsmanship. Well done, Hannah, Christina, Lincoln and Will!!
