Principal's Reflection
Well, Week 1 done and dusted. We had a smooth but busy start to 2024. It was great to see young people back at Shalom. There will still be some nerves and wrinkles to work out but there are always people here ready and willing to assist. Over the last few weeks we’ve watched the path of many of our 2023 graduating class. We were very proud of their outcomes and feel confident that they will be confident moving into their futures. Our students achieved some very pleasing results last year.
The first slide looks at the career destinations of the 2022 cohort:
The second slide outlines the number of VET qualifications achieved by the 2023 class:
Below is a summary of the ATAR results for the 2023 class:
Again, we are very pleased with the data above. In 2023, we had 118 Year 12 students who were eligible to receive an ATAR. Of those, 107 gave us permission to view their results and the table above reflects the data to which we have access.
Afternoon Pick Up – the first week of school is always incredibly busy in our carparks after school. I’m hoping that more parents will quickly realise that getting their child a spot on a bus home or to a less congested part of town is infinitely preferable to sitting in a queue in our carparks. However, for those who choose to use the main carpark in front of Administration, if you are picking up your child, the only place to do so is in front of Admin. PLEASE DO NOT park on the other side of Br Hogan Drive and wait for your child to come to you. That situation creates too great a danger for children crossing Br Hogan Drive and dodging buses and cars.
We got to welcome 270 Year 7 students last week along with 35 new students from Year 8-12. We also welcomed nine new teachers, two back from Maternity Leave, fourteen Gap Year staff and three new staff undertaking Traineeships at the College. That is a huge and significant ‘shot in the arm’ for the Shalom community. We look forward to the positive difference each of those new members will make to our community. I hope that they all feel very welcome. Click on the link below to see the faces of new staff who may be teaching your child this year. Very happy to have back with us Ms Anita Stewart and Ms Bree Broadhurst from Maternity Leave.
Clothing Store – we are very aware that the clothing store did not work as well as we would have liked prior to the school year commencing. We have a number of factors to work through – lots of new students, product not being available, second hand uniform availability etc. The Clothing Store at Shalom is a significant enterprise and we need to work on doing this better. I am enormously appreciative of your patience and forbearance.
