Queensland Indoor Hockey National Titles

Congratulations to Courtney K and Sophie A for representing the Queensland Flare U/13 Indoor Hockey Team at the National titles in Canberra.

The girls had a very successful tournament. Both Courtney and Sophie received “Player of the Match” awards for various games, and Sophie picked up the “Coaches Award” for the tournament.

The team finished the tournament in equal first position, but as there were no finals (round robin comp), they were relegated to 2nd place on goal differences. There were 7 states competing.

Both Sophie and Courtney tied for 3rd top goal scorers for the tournament with five goals each.

Great achievement Courtney and Sophie

Shalom Teams in State Table Tennis Tournament

On Friday 1 December 2023, two Shalom teams competed in the Under 15 (Junior) Division of the Queensland Schools State Table Tennis Championship in Brisbane.  Lincoln C and Oscar Q competed in the boys competition, while Christina L and Meredith S competed in the girls.  Both teams had previously competed well at the local Bundaberg championship on 4 November to earn the right to compete in the state titles.

The boys team played in a tough pool of three – one team went on to claim overall honours for the Junior Boys; the other claimed gold in Division 2.  Lincoln and Oscar played very well, with Lincoln not losing a singles game for the tournament. However, they were not able to get a victory and were relegated to Division 3. In this division, the Shalom boys dominated and easily claimed gold – beating two other teams in three matches each.

The Shalom Girls were an unstoppable force in the Junior Girls competition.  Playing in a round robin against all other teams (including Open Girls), they beat two schools by five matches to nil. Their closest game was against local rivals St Lukes, which they won three matches to two. Overall, Christina and Meredith went through the day undefeated to claim gold in Junior Girls. This is the second year in a row for Christina to win the School State Junior Girls. Well done girls!!

Congratulations to both teams. Thanks go to Dave Delpratt from Bundaberg Table Tennis for his dedication in supporting students participating in table tennis over many years.

Rowing Come Try Sessions

Time to try a new sport? Like an individual and team sport? Enjoy being around water? Rowing could be the sport for your child.

Rowing is a unique school team sport that is only offered in high school. Shalom has a strong rowing team and is looking for new recruits. Training is 2-3 times a week on the river at different times (generally juniors in the afternoon & seniors in the morning). There is also extra land training available after school at the gym and with the rowing machines. The team competes in 5-6 regattas a year with all the local regattas held at Bucca and some at Rockhampton. There is a yearly fee due to boats, facilities, maintenance and insurance. Shalom Rowing is a fun family orientated group that is involved in all aspects of rowing – coaching, fundraising, maintenance, cleaning etc. Rowing is an all over body workout that not only builds students physically but supports their mental, emotional and social growth and development.

If your child is interested in trying our oarsome sport, please sign on to one of our sessions using the link below. We will then hold a parent information evening on Tuesday 13th Feb 7pm in Loyola. We are also holding a rowing machine challenge in the school gym during the lunch breaks on Mondays and Wednesday in Week 2 & 3. There are prizes for the fastest junior boy and girl, and senior boy and girl.

Looking forward to seeing this oarsome team grow. Any questions or for more information don’t hesitate to contact us.
