Shalom Chess Success

“Of Chess it has been said that life is not long enough for it, but that is the fault of life, not Chess” (William Ewart Napier)

Congratulations to the 24 players who represented Shalom at the Inter-School Chess Competition held on Wednesday 22 February at St Luke’s. Shalom entered an impressive six teams on the day, significantly the largest of any school, and produced some notable results.

Particular congratulations go to Shalom Black (Callum M, Waylen H, JJ W and Taniela K) who received a team silver medal in the Premier Division. Scores were tied for first place at the end of the day, however our team was heartbreakingly relegated to second by the algorithm used for ‘tie-breakers’. Callum received a silver medal and Waylen received a bronze medal in the individual categories – outstanding results from these boys.

The Shalom Red team (Nicota F, Jonathin E, Jacob B and Robert G) were not far from a podium finish in the Premier Division reflecting the depth of talent we enjoy at Shalom. Our remaining team in Premier Division of Shalom Blue (Tyler P, Cannon Z, Mason C and Zach G), also scored plenty of wins – even more impressive given their young age.

In Division B, Shalom White (Will M, Eli B, Rowel F and Leo W), despite finishing with a high score, missed out on a team medal by a small margin. Shalom Yellow (Jai P, Jacksen P, Noah B and Heath A) and Shalom Green (Xavier S, Zara W, Sebastian T and Baxter W) won their fair share of matches and also finished on quite high scores. It was particularly pleasing to see these Year 7/8 teams produce some excellent chess which is promising for the future of Shalom Chess.

Congratulations also go to Nicota F, Leo W, Tyler P, Will M and JJ W who received a Merit ribbon for consistent performance on the day - an impressive achievement.
