Australian Rowing Championships

Jada C had a wonderful experience as she competed in Sydney at the Australian Rowing Championships. At the age of 16, Jada competed in Under 19 with the best of the best. Jada progressed from her heat to the repechage where she came 5th in her 2km race. Unfortunately it was tough, the first two were the only rowers that progressed to the Semi-Finals. Jada throughout the week rowed extremely well and every time she rowed she got a personal best with her times. Jada was pleased with her results and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. Congratulations Jada

Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships

Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club

Harriet M, Elizabeth P and Amelia W competed at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships held two weeks ago as part of an U17 Patrol Team achieving Silver in the Finals. The team achieved Gold in this event back in February earning a place in Aussies.

They competed against Mooloolaba, Bondi, North Steyne (NSW) & Mullaloo (WA). They had an amazing run in both the physical events of team swim and a tube rescue, excelled in the theory paper and gained near-perfect scores for the Team Resus and Live patient assessment. Their 15-minute scenario was the stuff of legends, rescuing and treating any patients that came their way and doing so with compassion and skill.

Elliott Heads Surf Lifesaving Club

Aarj D, Ethan G and Stevey H also competed at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. Aarj made the Final (25th) in the Swim and Semi Final in the Ironman and Board, and Ethan made the Final Ironman (17th), Swim Race (28th) and the Semi Final Board race.

Amazing results to make any final at Aussies due to all events being held in one day from heats, quarter finals, semis and finals. They made hard cuts to get through each round. There were over 160 competitors in each age group and 8000 over the course of the carnival.

Great achievement for all Shalom students involved.

Rowing Development Camp - Oarsome Success!

End of Term 1 we held our annual Shalom Rowing Development Camp at Bucca. All the rowers, new and experienced, took on new challenges over the weekend. The Seniors tried out sweep rowing (1 oar instead of 2) in the 4 and the big 8. The new rowers had a go at the most difficult boat, the single. Most stayed on top of the water, but a few went for a refreshing dip. We had heaps of fun practicing the capsize drill and getting back into our boats, playing night games, and finished off the weekend with a fun team relay.  There were three teams - Team Sam, Team Kodee and Team Jacob – the jury is still out on which team won as there was lots of early starts!! We were truly blessed with great weather, great food and great company.

The BIGGEST THANK YOU goes out to our parents and volunteers that assisted over the weekend. We had helpers on the water coaching and boat driving, helpers in the kitchen preparing and cooking all the food, help with boat loading and transporting boats. We truly couldn’t have done it without your help and support. It takes a village to make rowing happen and we are grateful for our village. We are looking forward to our next big Bucca adventure - at our first regatta on Sunday 21 April.

Keep being oarsome.
