2024 FIA Karting Academy Trophy

Congratulations to Ky B for his achievements while competing in France at the opening round of the 2024 FIA Karting Academy Trophy on the weekend.

Ky showed true grit and determination to claim a top six finish.

After being forced to start from the rear of the grid for three heat races following a qualifying penalty, he showed speed and maturity to continually manoeuvre his way towards the front of the field to ensure he made the 36 kart grid for the final.

He finished his heat races in 13th, 13th and 9th. Starting from 24th on the grid in the final, Ky methodically worked his way up the order and was classified sixth in the final standings.

Ky will compete in the next round held in Slovakia mid-June.

Shalom Tennis Success

On Tuesday 30 April, 22 tennis players represented Shalom in the Regional Finals of the Queensland Secondary Schools Teams Tennis (QSSTT) Event. It was fantastic to see the number of representatives participating from Shalom – by far the largest team in the region. The day was highly successful with Shalom winning all divisions on the day.

The first Open Boys team of Zain A, Lachlan C, Lachlan R and Xander W, lost only one set on the day, including beating a strong St Luke’s team 5-1. This result demonstrates the talent we are so fortunate to have at Shalom with these boys playing high quality tennis throughout the day.

Edi R, Harry K, Jack H and Chase S comprised a second Open Boys team. Faced with two high quality teams, this team played some excellent tennis to remain competitive finishing third overall. With three players in first Open Boys team in Year 12, these players will carry the hopes of our Shalom Open Boys in future years.

The Year 7-9 Girls team of Amelia W, Indiannah D, Megan C, Bryana C and Harmoni M played some excellent tennis, winning the competition comfortably without losing a set. With some young players of very high quality in the team, these girls are sure to remain competitive for some time.

The first Year 7-9 Boys team saw the team of Nic C, Jack B, Jake W and Jai P winning through to the State Finals in a thriller against Discovery Christian College. The rubber came down to the last set, where Nic and Jack held their nerve to win their final doubles match. These boys are the next generation at Shalom and are all good players – a testament to the depth we currently have at Shalom.

Additionally, Shalom is fortunate to have fielded a second Year 7-9 Boys team of Gabe K, Isaac T, Kallam W, Lachlan D and Tokoko W. These boys showed some excellent skills to finish third in their division on the day – an excellent result. These boys will only continue to get better as the years progress – an exciting prospect for Shalom tennis.

The winning teams of these divisions will compete in the State to battle it out with the best schools from around Queensland. This will be a challenging event as we compete against the Schools of Excellence in Tennis from around the State, but we have the talent to be competitive.

If you wish to get involved in tennis, there are several avenues. Tennis is a Term 3 school sport, a SCASA sport on Thursday afternoons and there are tournaments such as the QSSTT that we compete in. If you are keen to be involved, feel free to contact Brendan Maher or Dan Hubbard for more information.
