CHESS NEWS

“Life is a kind of Chess, with struggle, competition, good and ill events” (Benjamin Franklin)

For the first time, Shalom hosted the Inter-School Chess Competition on Wednesday 22 May – an honour and privilege for our school. Teams from most primary and secondary schools in Bundaberg and the wider district came from far and wide to participate, with the Sports Centre filled with approximately 130 chess enthusiasts. Shalom entered an impressive six teams on the day, the largest of any school, and produced some excellent results.

L-R: Shalom Sports Centre, Callum, Seth, Max & Luke

Shalom’s top-rated team, Shalom Black (Callum M, Seth G, Max C and Luke R) who received a team silver medal in the Premier Division, missing the gold by a heartbreaking 0.5 points.

Shalom also fielded two other teams in the Premier Division developing our talent against tougher opposition. Shalom Red (Nicota F, Jacob B, Mason C, Zach G) and Shalom White (Leo W, Cannon Z, Jonathon E, Alex C) demonstrated our depth of talent, with each player scoring their share of wins, in some cases against much older opponents – a remarkable feat.

Shalom fielded three teams in the Secondary Division, with all players showing their skills. Although missing out on a medal, the Shalom Blue team of William M, Rowel F, Quaid B and Eli B finished very close with each player performing well. The next generation teams of Shalom Yellow (Jai P, Baxter W, Hugh M, Tyler K) and Shalom Green (Derick H and Noah B) are showing continued improvement and will be a force to be reckoned with in coming years.

Individually, Shalom also had some excellent results, with Callum receiving a silver medal in the Premier Division for the second time this year showing his amazing talent in this game. Rowel F, Tyler K and Will M also received merit ribbons for winning most of their games – well done boys!

ROWING

ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT 15KM DOWN THE BURNETT RIVER

On Sunday 19 May, 35 Shalom rowers made history with the Bundaberg Rowing Club first ever Pressler-Brown 15km Time Trial. Rowers had to row from the Rowers Club 15km downstream to the Port Marina. We set out in junior, senior, girls, boys, mixed and composite crews in six quads, four doubles & one single. Despite the nerves the rowers smashed it with most crews finishing in just over an hour. Results were so close with only 1 minute between crews on the finish line.

Overall, we finished with 4 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 2 x 3rd & 2 x 4th. All the rowers hopped off the water smiling & sharing their triumphs so definitely a popular event to add to the Rowing Calendar for next year. Thank you to all the coaches and parents that helped out to make this event a success. We appreciate all your support.
