From the Library
On Wednesday 22 May we sent our junior team (year 7 & 8) accompanied by Ms Karen Lyons, off to Rosedale to battle it out in the 2024 Regional Reader’s Cup Competition. Our little team came in at a very respectable 5th place in a field of 10 teams – well done team and thank you Ms Lyons!

The Reader’s Cup Competition was introduced in 2004 to celebrate 50 years of the Childrens’ Book Council of Australia in Queensland. Originally, it catered for Years 6-8 as a single competition then later split into two sections of 6/7 and 8/9. As Year 7 transitioned into high school in 2015 the competition changed to 5/6 and 7/8. In 2017 a Year 9-10 competition was added in the Wide Bay Region and from 2020 there is a state final held in all three sections.
Teams of four to five students together read a set of nominated books, and then compete with other teams to answer quiz questions from the books. Winners from regional competitions then compete in a state final.
Literary programs such as Readers Cup encourage engagement with the written word and develop a love of reading, challenge students to read widely, and work collaboratively in a team. The Readers Cup Competition also allows readers to compete at a regional and state level like sporting competitions and to meet other students with a similar passion for books.
