Shalom Netball

Another Interschool Netball Competition bites the dust!

6-weeks of fun and games was had by all. Friendships forged and hopefully fires lit for future Australian netballer aspirations! Out of our 9 Shalom teams that competed we had 6 teams make it through to Finals on Wednesday, an excellent effort indeed. Unfortunately, our senior team and one of our year 9 teams were plagued with illness and injury and had to forfeit. But our 4 junior teams represented Shalom well with an exhilarating Shalom vs Shalom grand final in the 7/8 division with Shalom 8 Black getting up over Shalom 8 White 37-18. Thank you to all of the participants and the wonderful staff who volunteered their time to coach and umpire – your support of Shalom Netball Program is very much appreciated. Finally, thank you to our amazing Sponsorship Team for helping us to provide these opportunities for our students.

Shalom Rugby League

It has been an incredibly busy and successful couple of weeks for Shalom College Rugby League students and staff. Our junior girls competed in the BDSSS Dolphins Schoolgirls grand finals and the Schoolgirls Karyn Murphy Cup. Our junior boys participated in the BDSSS Broncos Challenge Grand Finals and Dolphins Knockout games. Additionally, our NRL Schoolboys Cup First XIII boys and girls faced off against Rockhampton Grammar at Shalom in the Dolphins Cup.

NRL Schoolboy Dolphins Cup Round 3 – Shalom College 24 vs Rockhampton Grammar 18

Shalom’s first XIII got of to a great start after withstanding some early pressure from Rocky Grammar, striking first with a great try to Lachlan C in the corner, from here we would go on to dominate the next 40 minutes, extending our lead out to a commanding lead 24 -0 through tries to Levi M, Oscar D, and Parkka P. Through some poor discipline, Shalom invited Rocky back into the contest in the final 12 minutes, with the visitor’s gaining momentum with three late tries to make for an exciting finish, but Shalom would steady the ship and hold strong in the last few minutes to earn a much-needed victory.

NRL Schoolgirls Dolphins Cup Round 3 – Shalom College 10 vs Rockhampton Grammar 8

In their first game of the Schoolgirls Dolphins Cup competition, our first XIII girls showed resilience and toughness to outlast a solid Rocky Grammar team 10-8. This game was full of big hits from the outset, with repeated defensive efforts applying consistent pressure to Rocky Grammars attack. Shalom would make hard work of it though, through poor discipline and too many turnovers. It was a gritty first up win and the girls showed great improvement especially on the defensive side. Two tries to Zoe S, with some nice lead-up work from Rhani D would be enough seal to win, as the girls now look ahead to Confro.

NRL Year 10 Dolphins Challenge Round 3 – Shalom College 12 vs Rockhampton Grammar 12

After a disappointing first up game against St Brendan’s the coaching staff were looking for a vast improvement against Rocky Grammar. The first half was a dramatic improvement, with Shalom getting out to a 12 – 0 lead at the break, due to a double from hooker Luke G. After controlling the ball well in the first half, the 2nd half was a different story, with ill-disciple creeping in with too many turnovers and penalties putting the team under pressure, in which the opposition took advantage of, hitting back with two 2nd half tries to level the score at 12-12 with 5 minutes to play. Shalom had a few opportunities late in this game but just came up short. A very good improvement but too many handling errors would cost them in the end.

BDSSS Broncos Challenge Grand Finals & Dolphins Knockout

The Year 7/8 boys grand final witnessed Shalom College (Red), coached by Mr. Kaufusi, triumphing 32–4 over a resilient Shalom College (Black) team led by Mr. Hammermeister. The match was an exhilarating display of rugby league, played with great spirit by both sides. Shalom (Red) emerged as the stronger team, but Shalom (Black) made them earn their victory with an impressive performance. In the Year 9 boys' division, Shalom College, under the guidance of Mr. Rassmusen, secured a narrow victory against North Bundaberg SHS in a thrilling come-from-behind win. Despite a slow start that allowed North Bundaberg to take an early lead, Shalom fought back. The game hinged on ball control, and once Shalom improved their defensive pressure and commitment, they clawed their way back to a gritty 22-18 win.
In the Dolphins Knockout, both our year 8 and 9 boys also took out the Wide Bay north division, defeating BSHS 44-0 and 14-0 respectively in another great result for our boys, and will now progress to the Wide Bay finals in term 3 against Xavier College.

BDSSS Dolphins Schoolgirls Grand Finals & Karyn Murphy Cup Winners

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 girls’ team, coached by Taylor Driver, and our Year 9/10 girls’ team, coached by Mr. O’Driscoll, for their remarkable victories in the BDSSS NRL Dolphins Schoolgirls competition! Both teams went undefeated, showcasing exceptional skill and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. The Year 7/8 girls dominated with a 16-4 win over BNSHS, improving with each game. Meanwhile, our Year 9/10 girls displayed incredible toughness and resilience, coming from behind to secure a 12-4 victory against BSHS. Well done to both teams!

Additionally, our Year 7/8 girls continued their impressive run by winning the Karyn Murphy Cup Wide Bay Division, defeating Bayside CC in a hard-fought match with a score of 12-8.

Congratulations and a big thank you to all the coaches and support staff for your time and efforts this year; we couldn't do it without your support and commitment.

Shalom Rowing – LEAD UP REGATTA #1

On Sunday 9 June, our 48 rowers participated in their first lead up regatta for the season. This was the first regatta where rowers did the big Rowing Queensland distances. Juniors 1km, Yr 10s 1.5km & 11 & 12’s 2km. Despite the cold start and lots of layers, the day warmed up with all the rowers having lots of successes throughout the day.

Overall all rowers finished with a 1st , 2nd , or 3rd but as this is a lead up regatta, places weren’t awarded. Overall, we had 18 crews & rowers cross in 1st place, 16 in 2nd place & 10 in 3rd place.

It was exciting to see our 25 new rowers challenging themselves with the big distances and also racing in a single. The single is the hardest boat to row in as it is just you. All rowers put in a great effort and gained valuable race experience for the regional, Central Queensland, regatta that is held on 22 & 23 June. Our rowers will be versing the top in the region with Townsville and Rockhampton also participating in CQ.

A big THANK-YOU to all the parents and coaches that helped out on the day. We had parents on the water in safety boats, helping in the canteen, handing our bow numbers, in the judge’s tower, boat loading, towing trailers. The day would not have been a success without your assistance. Thank you to our sponsors also, and for their financial support for our team uniform.

Keep being oarsome!!

Shalom Tennis

Congratulations to Amelia W, Indiannah D and Jai P, who represented Wide Bay at the recent State Championships from the 13-16 June. The players were fortunate to play at the Queensland Tennis Centre - home of Pat Rafter Arena and the venue of many famous tennis tournaments including the Brisbane International. Against the best players in Queensland, our players had mixed success, with each scoring their share of wins among some losses. Overall, the Wide Bay team came 9th out of 12 regions - a commendable effort.

Shalom is so fortunate to have players of the ability of Millie, Indi and Jai, who will continue to improve as the years progress. Well done, Shalomies!
