Confraternity Shield Rugby League 2024 has concluded for both our boys’ and girls’ teams. Preparations began well before our first game, with students starting their training in early November 2023, putting in the work long before a ball was kicked. Both teams entered Confro 2024 with strong performances in their final lead-up Dolphins Cup games, giving the coaching staff quiet confidence in their ability to compete well.

Our journey commenced early Saturday morning with a 14-hour bus trip up the M1 to Townsville, finally arriving at the Mercure Townsville late on Saturday night, a bit weary-eyed with stiff legs and tight backs. Sunday morning saw our teams head down to The Strand for a walk and stretch, enjoying the beautiful backdrop of Magnetic Island.

Sunday afternoon was the official opening ceremony held at Ignatius Park College, with our team captains, Joseph D and Tenamo A, representing Shalom College in presenting our jerseys for the blessing for the carnival ahead.

Our First XIII Girls had a consistent carnival, with a win, a draw, and two close, hard-fought losses against quality opposition, including a narrow 10-4 defeat to the eventual champions. They finished the carnival in 6th position in Division 1, our highest placing for our girls’ teams at Confro. The girls competed hard and were in every game they played, showing great courage, effort, and resilience to back up after each match. It was wonderful to see our girls compete against some of the top schools, demonstrating that their hard work is starting to pay off.

The First XIII Boys faced tough opponents in their Division 1 pool and needed to win 2 of their 3 pool games to progress to the quarter finals. Unfortunately, they fell short, winning 1 out of 3 in their opening pool games, going down in a tough game against Marymount College, followed by a defeat to eventual champions Ignatius Park. Our boys went on to win against St Edmunds but dropped their next two games, finishing in 12th position in Division 1 with record of 2 wins and 4 losses.

While the results were not what we had hoped for, the boys prepared well for each game but just didn’t play to their potential. With a relatively young squad, they will gain invaluable experiences from the carnival, which will hopefully hold them in good stead for the future ahead.

I would like to thank all students for making a commitment to play rugby league at Shalom College, we are very grateful to have you on board and you are now a part of Shalom College history as representing Shalom at Confro 2024.
