Acting Principal's Reflection

Gail.png

This past week has been a beautiful reminder of the generosity, community, and spirit of celebration that makes our college so special. I was deeply moved to receive an anonymous donation from “2 X-exhausted parents”. In their note they explained that while they are beyond this stage of life themselves, they wished to support our young women at Shalom.

Such a simple yet powerful act of kindness speaks to the very heart of our mission: to uphold dignity, care, and compassion for our students. It echoes this week’s Gospel (Luke 14:1, 7–14), where Jesus calls us to humility and generosity. Asking us to take the lower place at the banquet table, to welcome those on the margins, and to give without expecting anything in return. To the parents behind this gesture, whoever you are, THANK YOU. Your kindness is both humbling and inspiring.

Last Thursday our community came together to celebrate Shalom Day. An occasion alive with colour, laughter, and gratitude, reminding us of the traditions and spirit that unite us. Highlights included the Interhouse Dance Challenge, with Rice House claiming victory, and the Battle of the Bands filling the airwaves and day with energy. Grandparents once again joined us, their presence a reminder of the love and wisdom passed through the generations. And, of course, no celebration would have been complete without cake being shared in abundance! Throughout it all our 2025 theme of Hope, symbolised by the rainbow, shone in the joy of students, the resilience of competition, and the spirit of community that captures this much-loved event.

Meanwhile on a sporting field in Mackay, our Year 10 2025 Dolphins Challenge Champions displayed remarkable grit and courage in their regional knockout final. In a nail-biting finish, they fell just two points short (20-18) to Kirwan SHS in the closing minutes of a truly gutsy match. Whether in triumph or heartbreak, true success is measured not only in results, but in the humility, determination, and hope with which we strive together. We congratulate our boys on their achievement and look forward to seeing what lies ahead for them in 2026.

Saturday night was the first time I had the privilege of watching Dance Night from the audience rather than from backstage. What an experience! The evening showcased outstanding talent from students across Years 7-12, in a variety of genres. A special moment came as we farewelled our Year 12 dancers, thanking them for the creativity, dedication, and passion they have bought to our school community.

We are deeply grateful to our staff and students whose hard work and enthusiasm make these events possible. These opportunities would not happen without the dedication and generosity of spirit that shines so strongly across our Shalom community. As a college may we continue to take our place at the Gospel’s banquet table, not seeking honour or recognition, but walking the path of service, humility, and generosity. In doing so, may we reflect the hope symbolised by the rainbow, a reminder of God’s promise and our shared calling to bring joy and compassion into the world.

Other news…….

BUSHkids is celebrating its 90th anniversary and marking this milestone with a free screening of the documentary SEEN at the Moncrieff Theatre on Tuesday 9th September. This ParentTV film explores the hidden struggles parents face and promises to be a valuable support for families of Year 10, 11, and 12 students. Please see attached flyer for details and ticket access, or view the trailer here: https://youtu.be/bZPQXpw6kT0

Finally, I recently met with Bundaberg Regional Council and TMR about the concept design of a pedestrian crossing for Eggmolesse Street. While the timeline is still to be confirmed, this project will significantly improve safety for students who use that exit, and we look forward to its completion.
