Atheltics

Over the school holidays, Koby I competed at the annual Spring Carnival Athletics Competition, adding to his Race-Walking accolades with a 1st place finish in the Under 16 Boys 1500m Race Walk. Not only did he take the gold, but he also broke the Spring Carnival record and claimed the QLD Best Performance record with a new time of 6:30.52.

Basketball

In the last week of Term 4, the Shalom Open Girls Basketball team competed at the Champion Basketball Schools QLD – All Schools tournament.  The girls played in Division 2.  Day 1, game 1 saw a tough loss for the Shalom Open Girls Basketball team. After trailing by over 20pts, the Shalom team fought bravely to force the game against A B Paterson into overtime. Unfortunately going down by 6pts. Game 2, the Shalom girls bounced back and defeated Trinity College, Beenleigh 45-34. In a scrapy game, the Shalom girls rallied well after the morning loss, and were victorious in a must win game. Day 2, game 3 was the last of our pool games and another close game but unfortunately it was a loss to Sheldon College 50-44. This placed Shalom 3rd in our pool.  In the afternoon cross-overs, Shalom took on Mt Alvernia, who were too strong, winning 59-42. This put the girls playing off for 9th – 16th in Division 2, with the bottom three teams to be relegated for 2026.

Shalom defeated Centenary Heights SHS from Toowoomba, 52-39 to force our way into the 9th-12th playoffs and avoiding the relegation games.  In the afternoon game, we played a very physical Capalaba SHS team. Unfortunately, we lost a player to injury early but the girls battled hard, going down 62 - 50. On the final day of competition, playing off for 11th/12th and with a player down due to injury, the girls lost to Redlands SHS, 52-30. The Shalom girls played with grit and determination all tournament and their sportsmanship was first class

Congratulations to the three Yr 12 girls (Ava Ma, Ava Mu & Lara M) on their last CBSQ competition, with Ava Mu (Players Player) and Ava Ma (Coaches Award), collecting well-earned awards. All the girls contributed so much over the four days and the Coaching staff could not have been prouder of their efforts.  Thanks also goes to Mrs Giles, Mrs Jacobsen and Ms Loeskow for the efforts put in prior to and during the competition.  And a special mention to the team sponsors: Bundaberg Auto Air & Electrical, Hallstone Constructions, Waves, Rum City Foods.

Rowing

QLD Championship Regatta Oarsome Success

During the September school holidays, 31 of our rowers took on the best in the state at the QLD Championships Regatta at Wyaralong Dam. Over 800 athletics competed from 50 different schools.

Rowing on a different course was a learning experience for our rowers as they are used to the pristine conditions of our local course at Bucca. Saturday seen high winds which resulted in the racing being stopped for part of the day. Sunday seen a delay due to the foggy conditions & then the rest of the day & Monday we had very hot temperatures.

Despite the tough conditions, 12 crews made the semis, 7 crews made finals & 1 crew got Bronzes & another crew got GOLD!!! Biggest congratulations to all our rowers on their results & their effort & commitment leading up to their final school regatta for the year.

Our outstanding Finals results over the 3 days included:

THANK YOU again to all the coaches, parents and volunteers that made these events possible. Also, to our sponsors that helped us purchase our uniforms. The rowers looked oarsome on the water. The States regatta brings an end to our school season for rowing. We are still training for fun and fitness and are keen to get new rowers onboard ready for next year. Look out for our come and try sessions later in the term. Week 6 we will have sessions available for current students and also in Week 7 for any Year 6s that are interested in trying a new sport in high school. We also have a Rowing Day in the last week of school during the alternative program to encourage any interested students to try our oarsome sport during the day. More details to come.
