Chess Success
Congratulations to the players who represented Shalom at the Inter-School Chess Competition held on Tuesday 21 February at Avoca State School. Shalom entered an impressive five teams on the day which produced some notable results.
Particular congratulations go to Shalom Black (Callum M, Waylen H, Charlie E and JJ W) who received a team silver medal in a strong field. Shalom Red (Kahn A, Seth G, Joon M and Max C) were not far from a podium finish reflecting the depth of talent we enjoy at Shalom.
Shalom Black - Silver winners
Our remaining teams of Shalom Blue (Nicota F, Harry L, Jonathan E and Alex M), Shalom White (Thomas B, Will M, Jacob O and Luca H) and Shalom Yellow (Lachlan B, Taniela K, Max L and Josh W), all won their fair share of matches. It was particularly pleasing to see our Year 7 Shalom Yellow team produce some excellent chess which is promising for the future of Shalom Chess.
Congratulations also go to Callum M, Waylen H, Charlie E, Kahn A, Seth G and JJ W who received a Merit ribbon for consistent performance on the day - an impressive achievement. Callum and Waylen both had six wins out of seven on the day, equal with the individual silver and bronze medal winners, however both were relegated on a countback.

Interesting chess fact: During World War II, some of the top chess players were also code breakers. British masters Harry Golombek, Stuart Milner-Barry and H. O'D. Alexander were on the team which broke the Nazi Enigma code.
