HOCKEY

Congratulations to Hamish C who was selected in the Wide Bays boys 10 - 12 years Hockey team which was held in Hervey Bay last week.  He will now travel to Rockhampton in June. Hamish demonstrates great hockey skills and always shows good sportsmanship. A great achievement for Hamish.

Thank you to Maddy E and Emma K who volunteered to umpire at the 10 - 12 years Hockey Carnival. Both girls did a great job while providing them with valuable experience.

ROWING - SECOND REGATTA

Rowing_Sponsors_Banner.png

Saturday 13 May was the second lead up regatta for the 2023 local season. The weather created an extra challenge this time with the wind, rain and coldness. Despite the challenge our rowers still put in a great effort with some more oarsome results - 15 crews and rowers crossed in 1st place, 24 in 2nd place and 15 in 3rd place.

Highlights were our Year 7 boys and girls, Year 9 boys, Year 10 boys and girls, Year 11 girls and our Open boys and girls for all placing first. For the last race, the Open Mixed Quad, we mixed up all our senior rowers and had four quads on the water. It was so nice to see four Shalom quads lining up at the start line. Mixing up the crews made it a bit of fun for the last race of the day. Not sure how serious and competitive the crews were on the water though - with one crew ending up breaking an oar!!

A big THANK-YOU again to all the parents and coaches that assisted on the day. Rowing is a sport that needs lots of volunteers to make it happen, so we are grateful for all our wonderful parents and volunteers. Thank you to our sponsors as well. Can’t wait to show off our new shirts and hats for Head of River.

SHALOM TENNIS SUCCESS

On Monday 8 May, 18 tennis players represented Shalom in the Regional Finals of the Queensland Secondary Schools Teams Tennis (QSSTT) Event. It was fantastic to see the number of representatives participating from Shalom – by far the largest team in the region.

The Open Boys team of Zain A, Lachlan C, Lachlan R and Xander W won through to the State Finals in a tight tussle with St Luke’s. This team will be joined by young gun Harry K at the State Finals in Rockhampton at the end of the term to battle it out with the best schools from around Queensland. This will be a challenging event as we compete against the Schools of Excellence in Tennis from around the State, but we have the talent to be competitive.

The depth of Shalom tennis was on display with our second Open Boys team of Will S, Ethan V, Chase S and Liam H who battled hard going down in both their rubbers. These boys played some great tennis and certaintly did Shalom proud.

The Open Girls Team of Sophie M, Lara B, Erin K, Emily D and Megan C fought hard but came runners-up to a strong St Luke’s team. Between the two teams there were five Wide Bay players on show and some high-quality tennis was played by all. With some young players in the team, the girls are sure to remain competitive for some time.

The Year 7-9 Boys division saw the team of Harry K, Jake W, Jack H, Jack S and Isaac T finishing a close second to Discovery Christian College by only one set. These boys are the next generation at Shalom and are all good players – a testament to the depth we currently have at Shalom.

If you wish to get involved in tennis, there are several avenues. Tennis is a Term 3 school sport, a SCASA sport on Thursday afternoons and there are tournaments such as the QSSTT that we compete in. If you are keen to be involved, feel free to contact Brendan Maher or Dan Hubbard for more information.

Tennis joke of the week: Why shouldn’t you date tennis players? Because love means nothing to them.

Check out some of our players in action below.
