Commonwealth Youth Games - Trinidad and Tobago 2023

Congratulations to Shalom teacher Rebecca Jenner who has been announced as the  Australian Coach for the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Trinidad and Tobago this year.

From all Triathlon coaches in Australia, Rebecca was selected as the female coach to take the Australian Triathlon team to the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Commonwealth Games Australia have officially announced the Australia Triathlon Youth Games team. The team will attend the games in August at Trinidad and Tobago for 2 weeks.

Rebecca has been coaching Triathlon for 12 years to a National level, with many athletes reaching the Queensland team and medaling at National Championships. Throughout these 12 years, she has coached juniors from 10 to 18 years old. Junior athletes have come to her with a desire to swim and run and she has built them up from a beginner level to an elite sports level.

Rebecca has a passion for triathlon with not only coaching but also participating actively in it.

Last weekend, Rebecca attended the Australian Duathlon Championships, coming 3rd female overall, which will mean she was selected and will compete for Australia at the World duathlon championships in 2024.

This opportunity to travel with the Commonwealth Youth Games team as an Australian Coach is a dream come true for Rebecca

Congratulations Rebecca for an amazing acheivement.

Rowing - Central Queensland School Regatta Rockhampton

The first weekend of the school holidays, a team of 28 rowers travelled to Rockhampton to compete against the Central Queensland district. Saturday saw the racing delayed for 2 hours as fog engulfed the course, however, we were blessed with wonderful race conditions for the rest of the weekend. With over 240 competitors, this resulted in lots of heats, semis and finals. It was great to see most of our rowers progressing into the semis in their singles and into the finals in their crew boats.

Congratulations to our medal winners:

Gold – Girls Year 10 Single – Jada C

Silver – Girls Year 9 Single – Sophie E

Silver – Boys Years 8 Quad – Ellouise R (cox), Max L, Stan M, Balin C, Wade C

Bronze – Boys Years 8 Quad – Olivia G (cox), Olivia F, Zander D, Ryder D, Dylan A

Bronze – Girls Open Single – Emily E

A special shout out to our Years 7 that joined in the regatta – Max L, Wade C, Balin C, Stan M and Olivia F. Rowing Queensland regattas youngest age group is Year 8. So, the Year 7’s were rowing up into the Year 8 age group. All the year 7’s walked away with a medal which is an oarsome result for only starting this year, rowing up and competing in their first away regatta.

THANK YOU again to all the parents, volunteers and coaches that make this sport, and these opportunities possible. It takes a lot of hands and hours to put our rowers on the water and even more when we have to travel away – so THANK YOU. Looking forward to providing more updates later this term with more regattas happening in Term 3. Thank you to our sponsors as well for financially helping our team with our new shirts and bucket hats.

Tennis - Queensland Secondary Schools Tennis State Champtionships

On Monday 19 and Tuesday 20 June, Zain A, Lachlan C, Lachlan R, Xander W and Harry K represented Shalom as the Wide Bay Champions in the Queensland Secondary Schools Teams Tennis (QSSTT) Event. In this competition, Shalom played the best schools from each region in Queensland stretching from the Gold Coast to Peninsula and all the regions in-between. The standard of tennis in this competition is very high, with many of the schools running ‘Schools of Excellence’ in tennis.

In the face of this strong competition, our boys showed some exceptional skills, fighting hard in true Shalom spirit. Wins were difficult to come by in the early rounds against the strong metropolitan teams, however the boys found some success when playing other regional teams finishing 9th overall. It was obvious watching the level of tennis, that our boys have the ability to compete with the best in the State – the difference being the consistency the southern players have due to their heavy training commitments. Lachlan C showed his amazing talent gaining the best results of our team, winning two of his singles matches and a doubles. Zain A won the overall Sportsmanship Award, voted by the players of other teams as a quality player who always plays in the right spirit – an excellent achievement. Lachlan R, Xander W and Harry K also showed excellent skills, and each showed worthy competitiveness and improvement throughout the competition.

The trip was fantastic fun as well as being challenging, with the boys showing great team spirit and a sense of fun on and off the court. Hopefully we can repeat it in 2024!

Junior State Cup (JSC) Touch Football 2023

Congratulations to Taylor D who was recently awarded the Scott Notley and Kerry Norman Award. She has been recognised as having met the below requirements with her contribution back to the sport with referring and coaching.  Taylor has competed in JSC from U10s - competing for 9 years.

Each year at the Junior State Cup, QTF recognises one player from the respective boys and girls age divisions with the prestigious Scott Notley and Kerry Norman Award. To qualify for the award, the player must be in their final year of competition and should have represented an affiliate at a minimum of five (5) Junior State Cups. The awards are designed to recognise young players who have had a long record of participation in the Junior State Cup, who are considered great role models within their affiliate and for the sport, who play with honesty and fairness and produce high quality on field performances to match their off-field demeanour.

Taylor was also recently selected in the QLD Secondary Schools 16-19 years girls team in Touch Football.  Well done on these outstanding achievments.
