Science Together Event

Our team of Reef Guardian students had the opportunity to attend the Science Together event held on Monday 14 August, a celebration of 20 years of Reef Guardian Schools. The students heard from some inspirational guest speakers including Dr Jordan Nguyen  (Biomedical Engineer, Technology Futurist), Ruben Meerman  (Surfing Scientist), Craig McGrogan  (The Reef Authority), Dr Amie Anastasi  (CQUniversity), Cathy Gately  (Dept of Environment and Science), Don Gilson  (Inter-Fish Australian Corals, Melissa Lane  (The Reef Authority) and Amy Gash  (Lady Elliot Island). They participated in a range of activities, joining with students from schools across the Bundaberg region and explored a showcase of the initiatives their fellow Reef Guardian Schools were actioning.

As a Reef Guardian School we are committed to continue to take positive actions to contribute to Reef protection and resilience. We have an amazing opportunity to work with key stakeholders right on our doorstep including our Bundaberg Reef Guardian Council, Mon Repos Turtle Centre and the Reef Guardian Authority. Our Core Studies A students will hear more from the Reef Guardian Authority in a presentation as part of our biology unit this term. Some campaigns our Reef Guardians would like to continue to promote are:

• Cut the glow allow turtles to go.
• One Million Trees Bundaberg Region.
• Reduction of plastic waste.
• Sustainability projects.
• Core Studies Garden

Our Reef Guardian students would also like to thank the amazing Ms Catherine Pearson who helped to create our amazing display for the event. There will be a competition during our Waterford showcase evening to name our turtle that she created.

The event was a collaboration between the Bundaberg Regional Council and Reef Guardian Schools across the Bundaberg Region. This was largely driven by one of our wonderful Shalom parents, Judith Stutchbury who has written a book ‘Hatch saves the Reef’. Proceeds support student reef and environmental projects, there is a hyper link below to purchase the book.
