Principal’s Reflection

God must get so embarrassed!! It so often happens now and throughout history, that people say and do awful stuff and claim that their position is supported by God. God should be able to issue disclaimers! A couple of weeks ago, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, said that the war in Ukraine was an ‘act of resistance against Western consumerism and the West’s attempt to impose ‘gay pride’ on Ukraine.’ Patriarch Kirill also presented an icon of Mary to a Russian General as a gift of ‘protection’ for the Russian army and to accelerate their success. God suffers some really bad press.

We Catholics have done plenty of similar things. In both World Wars both sides used their faith in God as a reason and hope for their success. The Jesus of the Gospel who spoke about forgiving the other 99 times and loving unconditionally must really wonder which translation of those Gospels some religious leaders read. Happily, we don’t have to look far to see daily interactions that would bring a smile to the face of God. Last week our staff gathered to farewell Ed Bowen from Shalom. Ed has been a cleaner at Shalom for many, many years. He is 86 years old. We will miss him because every day as he emptied bins and attended to keeping Shalom tidy, he would always have a quick word with all. He called people by name, he knew something of their interests. He did not care that his job was far from the most glamorous – he just did it faithfully and well.

The God I believe in, if God were able to invite someone over for a cuppa, might have more to talk about with the Ed Bowen’s of this world rather than the Patriarch Kirill’s and others who think of themselves as God’s voice to the world. We wish Ed well and we are enormously grateful for the wonderful gift he has been to Shalom.

During Week 1 of Term 2 we will have our previously ‘displaced’ interhouse Swimming & Cross Country events. We’ll have Cross Country in the last period of Thursday after we commemorate ANZAC Day. Friday will be Swimming. Students miss two lessons on the Friday and do two lessons of normal classes. Each year, these events seem to bring on serious bouts of ‘illness’ among students. I suspect it is more likely a result of parents taking an easy option and giving into young people who might rather not participate. Parents, this is what we get paid the big bucks for! Let’s not give our children easy options when they want to take them. Participation is important. Please support us on this.

Close Contact Rules – Covid is still common for us all. Please take all the necessary precautions that have been drilled into us. Many households are disrupted by the ‘close contact’ rules if there is a Covid + case in a residential situation. There is an ‘out’ with this if your family home complies. If a Covid + case can be isolated in an area of the home with their own bathroom / toilet and an external door, other members of the family do not have to isolate. They would need to be asymptomatic, and a RAT is advised. The Covid+ person can’t have access to any common area of the house.

Adair Donaldson will be speaking to our students on Tuesday May 3. Adair is a very successful lawyer and presenter. He will speak to our students about the issue of ‘Consent’ and the concepts around ‘Safe Parties’. Both these topics are enormously relevant for our students. He will present to parents that evening at 7pm. If you have an adolescent child, I strongly encourage you to make attendance a priority at this event. It will be well worth your while.

Well done to all our Musicians on a wonderful Autumn Concert yesterday. They were fantastic. We are so lucky to have so many staff, like our talented Music staff, who ‘value add’ to the education we offer at Shalom. I hope that no one takes for granted all the extra opportunities our young people are offered in Cultural activities. This as well as all of those in Sport and other areas. School is so much more than what we do in class on a school day. All those other activities encourage young people to pursue their talents and expand their horizons – in all areas.

Assessment Forms and Procedures

All this information is now available on SIA in the Parent Dashboard in the Policies and Procedures toolbox. Look for the box labelled Curriculum Policies, Forms & Procedures. Here you will find assessment related forms such as Access to Extension, Absent for Exam and the Access, Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments Form. These documents are still available on our website in the Curriculum section via the Forms and Publication link.

Tutoring – Term 2

A new tutoring roster is currently being updated for Term 2. It will commence Week 1. Once finalised the roster will be advertised to students and parents via SIA. The tutoring sessions are free of charge. They are staffed by teachers from a variety of subject areas across the college. This is a valuable resource for your student to access if they seek any extra assistance with their learning.

Supplementary Session

Due to the high number of students missing assessment due to absence there will be an extra Supplementary Session running this Thursday 31 March from 3.10 pm in Li6. This extra session is for students in Year 9 – 12. Additionally, in Week 1, Term 2 we will move the usual Supplementary Session to Wednesday as Tuesday is the first day of the new term due to the public holiday.

NAPLAN

Next year will see a change of date for NAPLAN. QCAA advised schools last week that the news dates for 2023 testing will be 15 March – 27 March.

Year 7 and Year 9 students will sit the NAPLAN online tests from Tuesday 10 May to Friday 20 May.

All Year 7 and Year 9 parents/carers would have received a letter with important information and links to other available NAPLAN information.

Students will participate in two practice NAPLAN tests in Term 2, Week 1. If you have any concerns about NAPLAN or if you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com.

Please note: all students MUST have headphones or earphones to undertake the NAPLAN Online testing. This is the responsibility of families to ensure that students have their earphones or headphones for all test days, including the practice test. These headphones/earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. Wireless headphones (e.g. Apple air pods) are not compatible. If you need to purchase headphones or earphones, we suggest you do this as soon as possible. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6.

SIA – Log on Now! Get the Phone APP!

‘At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents’ – Jane D Hull

Sia, and the Shalom phone app, has now been available to parents since 20 February. At this stage, we have had 30% of parents log on to Sia. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. If you have not logged onto Sia yet, you will find the wealth of information that our teachers work hard to provide extremely valuable and a great way to keep it touch with your child’s progress. The phone app is even more convenient – a must-have for parents!

Shortly our IT team will re-send the email that was previously sent with your login details. If are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours.

CQU Experience Day

A group of 44 enthusiastic Shalom students attended the Year 12 CQ University Experience Day recently to tour the campus and discover the vast range of options available to study at their local university.

Students from Bundaberg high schools attended the one-day event, taking advantage of the opportunity to attend information sessions, ask questions and hear about what to expect when they enter tertiary study. Students participated in a number of interactive sessions that were aligned with their courses of interest which ranged from aircraft inspections (Bachelor of Aviation) to gameplay testing (Bachelor of Digital Media), simulations (Paramedic Science / Nursing / Medical Science) and so much more.

The experience really immersed students in uni life for a day, providing them with a representation of what they can expect if they enrol into post-secondary education at CQU.

Any students who may have missed the Year 12 Experience Day may like to attend the CQU Bundaberg Open Day on Thursday, 11 August from 4-6pm to discover all the options CQU has to offer. Register here to attend so you can stay up to date about the event, your course of interest and upcoming application. You will also automatically be entered into the prize draw to win some great prizes when you register.

Queensland Parliament Visit

Two members of the Queensland Parliamentary Education team and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Hon. Curtis Pitt, visited Shalom and met with three classes; Miss Stallard’s Year 9 Business and Civics class, Mr O’Driscoll’s Year 11 Legal Studies class and Mrs Johnstone’s Year 11 Social and Community Studies class. They introduced the students to the Queensland Parliamentary system and then Mr Pitt ran a mock Parliament with the students as Members of Parliament who debated and voted on a bill to increase school hours. The students thoroughly enjoyed the session and are very fortunate that this excellent opportunity to make politics and parliament “real” was available to them.

Quiet Achiever

Callum Macann

Since beginning Year 7 at Shalom, Callum Macann has injected himself into many and varied activities on offer. Callum, Year 9 has been heavily involved in the Shalom Chess Club and spends quite a number of his breaks fine tuning and honing his skills in preparation for competitions. He has been participating in many Interschool events as well as helping others with their preparation. These events can be individual competitions or set up as a Teams event. Callum has been successful in a number of these competitions.

As part of Callum’s ongoing success with Chess, he is happy to proclaim that he has defeated a number of Bundy’s better chess players over the years gaining a few competition ribbons and winning some medals.

Callum was a part of the school musical last year and has signed up for ‘Showcase’ this year where he will be playing the piano with a duet partner. He had been playing the piano for just over twelve months and is happy to be involved with the instrumental program at Shalom.

Callum plays club hockey which also keeps him busy, plus he has thoroughly enjoyed the Shalom eSports competitions. Callum maintains good grades at school and enjoys his PC class where he manages to help out where he can. Callum then has time for the school choir and Optiminds competitions. He was recently successful in making it through Stage 1 of the Telstra Innovations Award for creating/inventing something that helps Bundaberg. He is looking forward to being part of the Stage 2 process.

Callum is indeed a quiet achiever for Walsh House and we wish him all the best for the busy year ahead.

Instrumental Music

We’ve had another crazy start to our year with COVID wielding its mighty sword once more. Every one of us has faced challenges and made compromises to try to negotiate our way through this tumultuous time, and the music department has been no exception. With staff and student absences stymying individual and ensemble progress it has been difficult to be performance ready, however, we have not been beaten.

Last Sunday, our Shalom College music department presented their first concert for the year with each group showcasing their achievements for the term by presenting their favourite piece to an audience of enthusiastic supporters. It was wonderful to welcome our year 7 students as they performed for the very first time in our ensembles, we look forward to watching their growth within the program.

Congratulations to all for the dedication and commitment it took to overcome adversity and make this concert a success. After all the hard work that happens, getting up to perform to a live audience is what it’s all about.

We are blessed to have such a wonderful instrumental music team who are passionate about sharing the love of their art with their students and we are equally blessed to have such talented and dedicated students who strive to be the best they can be. Thank you to the parents who get their children to early rehearsals and encourage them in their daily practice, without your support none of this would be possible.

From the Library

For a magical April get engrossed in a little fantasy. Newly arriving on the shelves in the Beerarlem Junior Library are two fantasy series. Both are written for the same reading level, but one aims for simplicity while the other ventures into deeper complexities.

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles would appeal to children of around 11-12 and consist of four volumes which follow the adventures of our heroine, Princess Cimorene, and her best friend Alianora and their world of dragons. The author Patricia C. Wrede weaves humour through the magic as she tells of talking frogs, moving forests and staircases to nowhere (because one king once loved to slide down their bannisters). Mendanbar, the current King of the Enchanted Forest prefers to favour perfectly appointed dungeons. These elements of the ridiculous keep these stories from seeming didactic even though they carry clear messages about the ‘good’ people being sensible and hard-working, and the ‘bad’ being lazy and greedy.

Brandon Mull's five-volume Fablehaven series is aimed at the same age group but is presented as a more serious story. Displaced siblings Kendra and Seth need to stay at their grandparents' farm for two weeks while their parents go on a cruise. Imagine their surprise when they discover that the farm is one of the few remaining fablehavens, refuges for magical creatures. Sadly, the safety of Fablehaven is being threatened by those forces who wish to capture the highly valuable creatures. Mull creates a magical and dangerous experience with his books that will be enjoyed by the reader who prefers to explore a more intricate plot.

Summer Sport

Table Tennis

The final round of table tennis for summer sports saw the teams split in to three divisions based on results from the previous four weeks. Shalom had teams in each of the ‘finals’, plus a fourth team in a third place playoff, so all teams competed in our final day. Unfortunately, it was not Shalom’s day!!

In Division 3, the Shalom 4 team of Harry Laing, William Cole-Bloore and Eli Sewell (Will Savage kindly stepped across to support the Shalom 2 team which was short on players) played St Lukes 2 in the final. Each player managed to grab a win in a very close contest, however St Lukes 2 snuck away with a narrow win five matches to four (ten games to eight). A slight bit of luck Shalom’s way in any number of games would have changed the outcome.

For Division 2, the Shalom 2 team of Michael Richardson, Isaac Maas (along with assistance from Will Savage) played the final against Bundaberg Christian College 2. Again, each player gained at least one win, with three matches going to three games. BCC 2 gained the win six matches to three, leaving Shalom 2 as runners-up.

The Shalom 3 team of Oscar Buckley, Bailey Worrad and Jake Wall played off against North Bundaberg High for third place in Division 2. Once again, each player was able to gain at least one win - and once again, the results were ridiculously close with Shalom 3 being very unlucky to go down five matches to four (eleven games to nine).

In Division 1, the Shalom 1 team of Lincoln Carter, Jessica Carter and Zac Morrish played St Lukes 1. As expected for Division 1, the standard of play was very high and closely fought, with many games going beyond 11 points. Unfortunately, St Lukes 1 were the stronger team on the day, coming away with the trophy by six matches to three.

Overall, while the results on the final day did not go our way, the quality of play, effort put in to matches, and sportsmanship demonstrated by Shalom students on and off the court was commendable. Thanks to the many parents who supported our teams today and throughout the season.

Thanks also to the players who were unable to participate on the final day – many due to illness or Covid isolation – who contributed throughout the season: Christina Lee, Hannah Lee, Millie Pohlner and Lachlan Bowden.

Table tennis will be on offer again as part of winter sports in Term 3.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

THE CATHOLIC PARISH of BUNDABERG STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL
Kaye Beston
Deputy-Chair, Stewardship Council

Every parish has a culture but it can remain hidden, invisible and unnamed. God is constantly challenging us, as is Pope Francis to rebuild our Church, so that it is relevant, engaging and challenging of the culture in which we live. To assist in clarifying our purpose and key values as a Church, 3 Summits were offered in our Parish, open to all parishioners and lead by a consultant to listen to and hear as many voices as possible.

In these gatherings our Parish vision and values for the future were developed. It was also decided to restructure the Pastoral Council to a Parish Stewardship Council as a governing body and to appoint an Executive Officer Stewardship to work co-responsibly with the Parish Priest, all tasked with actively implementing the vision and values.

In his book Divine Renovation, Fr James Mallon presents many challenges with a breadth and depth of practical examples of vision in action. What do we want our Church to look like into the future? If our Vision is to be one of maintenance AND mission, we need to redesign our structures, systems and processes to achieve that vision, he argues.

A commitment of time and talents to ministries following our discernment process is currently underway in the Parish. The alignment and evaluation of ministries is instrumental in bringing the strategic plan, initiated at the Summit gatherings and further developed by the Stewardship Council, into authentic action.

The Parish Stewardship Council is the guardian and caretaker of the vision and values which are referenced and aligned in all decision making. Our Parish Mission Statement is our constant touchstone.

Discerned Strategic Focus Areas are:

  1. REACHING OUT IN LOVE
  2. FAITH FORMATION AND SERVICE
  3. WELCOMING AND VIBRANT FAITH COMMUNITY
  4. CHILDREN AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
  5. BUILDING OUR PARISH STRENGTH AND SUSTAINABILITY

The Stewardship Council meets monthly beginning each meeting with prayer and formation. This weekend a member of the Council will speak at all masses to update the community on actions and future directions. Council members welcome your interest, enquiries, suggestions and any feedback.

It is a privilege to be a member of the Bundaberg Catholic Stewardship Council. The Catholic Parish of Bundaberg is a healthy, joyful, active, caring and welcoming community that continues to grow and respond to the call to move forward in mission and service.

The words of Pope Francis resonate a ‘call to action’ message for all:

“My mission of being in the heart of the people is not just a part of my life or badge I can take off; it is not an ‘extra’ or just another moment in life. Instead, it is something I cannot uproot from my being without destroying my very self. I am a mission on this earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world”. (Evangelii Gaudium 273).
