Wayne Bennet, the legendary Rugby League coach, once shared his insight after years of working with young men, ‘that nothing good happens after midnight’. There are all sorts of reasons why that wisdom is still pertinent. Whilst I am not in Wayne’s category as a coach or mentor, could I suggest that ‘nothing good ever happens on SnapChat!’ There would be a few weeks in the year where time is invested by Shalom staff following up one or more child’s regrettable post on SnapChat or Instagram or TikTok. Those take up school time and, almost always, the poor choices by the young people in question, took place at home whilst the young person was in the care of parents.

The internet is constantly expanding. AI is exploding and we all need to do our best to stay abreast of developments. It is easy to see and read about the dangers of AI. We should not ignore the time saving and useful benefits of AI either. I know at Shalom that teachers are working hard to implement good uses of AI in classrooms. It is a wonderful tool in assisting the creation of great lessons and the structure of Units of Work – amongst other things.

SET Plan Interviews (Home Study Day for Year 10) |
Personal Futures Day is for all current year 10 students. It is important that all year 10 students attend on this day. This whole day program is devoted to looking at careers, subject selection and familiarising students with the SET Plan which is required when entering their senior phase of learning.
The Senior School Subject Selection Evening is an information night for all year 10 parents and students and relates directly to subject selections for Year 11 in 2025.
All students entering Year 11 are required to have a SET Plan to map their pathway to achieving their QCE and/or ATAR or an alternate pathway. The SET Plan interviews allow us to work with you and your student to create this plan and ensure that their subject selections are suitable for their chosen pathway.

More specific information about individual assessment items may be viewed through Sia > My Students. NET Team visit
Last week the Diocesan NET Team visited Shalom and joined in RE classes, Wednesday morning Mass and the Teacher Twilight PD. NET stands for National Evangelisation Team and the five young people on this team exhibited boundless energy and wonderful skills as they met our young people. They shared their love of Jesus and encouraged students to embrace their own unique gifts and purpose, along with their faith. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to receive these hope-filled messages from other young people.
Masses
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 10 students.

At Shalom, we believe in recognising not only consistent dedication but also the growth students show in their approach to learning. The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is designed to celebrate students’ motivation, persistence, and commitment to doing their best.
The ROSA Awards focus on personal growth and effort. Whether a student has maintained a high level of application or has made noticeable progress in their attitude and work habits, the ROSA Awards aim to acknowledge and encourage that individual journey. It’s one of the many ways we encourage and reward students for striving to reach their learning goals.
Coming up soon, teachers will be nominating up to two students from each middle school class for the Term One and Two ROSA Award. These students will be recognised at their House Assembly early in Term Three, and their names will be proudly published in the Shalom Newsletter.
We look forward to celebrating the achievements and growth of our students!

In every school community, there are those who shine quietly—leading not for recognition, but from a genuine place of care, humility and service. Rohan, a Year 12 student and Hogan House Leader, is one such student.
Always kind, friendly and respectful, Rohan is the first to lend a hand—whether it’s helping out at the Inter-House Swimming Carnival, guiding younger students through the Year 7 Buddy Program, or supporting ANZAC Day commemorations with grace and reverence. His calm presence and reliability make him a pillar within both Hogan House and the wider school community.
Academically, Rohan consistently maintains a high GPA, balancing his studies with an impressive commitment to extra-curricular pursuits. A passionate golfer, he proudly represents Bundaberg and Wide Bay in the sport—a testament to both his skill and dedication.
As a Hogan House Leader, Rohan leads with quiet confidence, always putting others first and striving to build a positive, inclusive house culture. We look forward to seeing how Rohan continues to grow and inspire in his final year at school. He is, without doubt, a quiet achiever in every sense.
If you would like to submit any sporting achievements about your child/children along with a photo, please email your submissions to Simon_Gills@rok.catholic.edu.au
Please note photo submissions must only include photos of students from Shalom.

Race Walking Championships
Recently Koby I competed in the 58th Annual Lake Burley Griffin National Road Race Walking Championships in Canberra at the Stromlo Forest Track. Under some pretty unfavourable conditions of sleet, rain, winds and below 0 temperatures, Koby managed to walk away with 4th in the U16 Men’s 3000m race walk and 3rd in the Men’s U18 5000m race walk. Congratulations Koby.

Rowing
OARSOME FIRST REGATTA FOR THE SEASON
Sunday 9th June, our rowers participated in their first Regatta for the 2025 local season, a 500m Sprint Regatta. The goal of having the shorter races for the first regatta was to help support new rowers as they learn the art of racing. The course was a sea of green from weed that accumulated, but it quickly cleared, and the weather didn’t disappoint for our first regatta. Also, for the first time ever we had Rockhampton Grammar join us for one of our local regattas adding to the competition.
Despite the extra competition, our rowers did oarsome with all rowers finishing in the top 3. As this is a lead up regatta no medals or places were awarded. Overall, we had 19 crews cross in 1st place, 17 in 2nd place & 15 in 3rd place.
The exciting part of the day was seeing our 16 new rowers crossing the finish line in their first regatta. All rowers put in a great effort and gained valuable race experience for the next Regatta in 3 weeks’ time at Bucca. Great to see our rowers as well sporting their new rowing undershirt.
A big THANK-YOU to all the parents and coaches that helped out on the day. We had parents on the water in safety boats, helping in the canteen, handing out bow numbers, in the judge’s tower, boat loading, towing trailers. The day would not have been a success without your assistance. Thank you to our sponsors as well that financial support our team uniform.
Keep being oarsome

In Term 2 and 3 your son or daughter will be involved in an outdoor education camp, held at Chaverim. The camps will be in Core Studies classes, so the students will go out with their Core Studies teacher or in some instances, another teacher.
Camp Information
Students will participate in outdoor education activities as the camp is part of a three-year program. These Outdoor Education programs aim to provide an additional approach to the personal and spiritual development of your child and the greater Shalom community. This three-year program has specific objectives designed to provide.
- An atmosphere of cooperation between students, which can be applied at school, in the family and on the sports field. This may be characterized by cooperation, encouragement and concern for fellow students.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, cooperation and harmony within oneself, with other people, and with the natural environment.
- Opportunities for participants to develop knowledge, low level skills and attitudes for participation in a number of outdoor pursuits.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a ‘minimum impact ethic’ consistent with the environment in which activities take place.
Each participant involved in the program will be given the opportunity to:
- “Look into the mirror” to see how their behaviours, both good and bad, impact their fellow participants.
- Participate in physically and mentally challenging activities while remaining safe on physical, mental and emotional levels.
- Experience and practice Christian values by living and working together in an open and encouraging atmosphere.
- Develop low level skills in a number of outdoor activities as well as a basic understanding of the associated equipment and safety precautions.
- Experience achievement in a non-competitive ‘win-win’ environment.
The camp also gives the teacher and students the opportunity to get to know each other well.
NO PHONES ARE ALLOWED ON THESE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS AT CHAVERIM.
The staff in charge will collect phones at the start of camp and return them just before 3.00 pm on day three. Alternatively, keep the phone at home for safe keeping.
I am sure the students will survive without their phones for 3 days and then they can focus on the outdoor education opportunities. If students need to call home for any reason the staff will let them use the phone at the Chaverim office.
The students will be transported to Chaverim by the College bus on the first day of camp. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 am the morning of the camp; they will return to the College at approximately 2.45 pm in time to catch the bus etc on the third day of camp.
Please find attached:
- Camp Program
- Equipment List - Clothes should be functional and suitable for outdoor and adventure activities and provide adequate protection from the elements. Camp is not a time to be fashion conscious; clothes need to be very practical. Students are also to be reminded that Chaverim is a Shalom College campus and all the usual College expectations apply. The wearing of unnecessary jewellery, make-up and inappropriate clothing is not permitted.
- Administration of Medication to Students form - if your child requires medication while on Camp please complete the form and hand it to your Teacher prior to departing on Camp.
Please login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend the Camp.
Once there click on the ‘Events and Payments’ tab and you will find a link to Year 8 Camp. Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend, as well as view details about the camp. You will also be asked to review and verify that your child’s medical details are correct.
To check your child’s medical information is current, please click on the ‘student details’ tab and go to ‘medical details’. Please make sure that the following sections are completed so that your child can participate in all activities on camp.
- Can Swim 25m
- Tetanus Up-To-Date
- Medicare Number
In the ‘medical conditions’ section, click ‘add new’ and you will see a drop-down box and notes section where you can also note any dietary requirements, sleeping issues and other details that you feel may be relevant to your child’s well-being at the camp. Once you are happy with the information you have provided, please click ‘verify’.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed.
It is very important that all information in the Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the wellbeing of your child.
If you require assistance with Parent Lounge login, please contact the office. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me here at the College by phone or email.

Year 12 Legal Studies Class Recap
Students from our Year 12 Legal Studies class have made Shalom College proud, taking out first place in the inaugural Bundaberg Region Mooting Competition hosted by North Bundaberg State High and organised by Miss Amy Wilson. The competition featured 14 teams from five schools across the region, including Hervey Bay, all vying for the top spot in a courtroom-style legal challenge that tested students' critical thinking, debating and public speaking skills. One of our teams, made up of Ethan M (Senior Counsel), George H (Junior Counsel), and Mitchell E (Scribe), impressed judges Amanda Weier, President of the Bundaberg & District Law Association and Magistrate Edwina Rowan with their professionalism and persuasive arguments. After presenting both prosecution and defence cases across two rounds, they emerged undefeated to claim the championship trophy which was provided with the support of the Bundaberg District Law Association.
All Shalom teams performed exceptionally well against strong opposition, demonstrating a deep understanding of legal processes and confidence under pressure. Their hard work and preparation reflected the high standard of our Legal Studies program. Congratulations to all involved for representing Shalom College with excellence and integrity!
