Our young people are stuck in an epidemic of body hate. As women – mothers, teachers, sisters, aunts – we hold great power when it comes to influencing how our girls and younger women see themselves.
Our world is superficial and full of messages about how we ‘should’ look, and this is affecting our children in greater numbers than ever before. Unrealistic and narrow beauty standards and suggestions that how you look is linked to your worth are incredibly harmful to young people’s self-esteem. We must help them to navigate this, and to find self-worth beyond appearance.
In March 2022, Dove released their report on the Dove Self Esteem Project, and the results were shocking. They found that:
• 1 in 2 girls say that idealised beauty content on social media is damaging to their self esteem
• 80% of girls compare themselves to the way others look on social media
• 8 out of 10 girls are so concerned with how they look that they opt out of important activities such as swimming, sports, going to the doctor and even speaking up with an opinion
• 7 out of 10 girls admit to putting themselves at risk by not eating or not visiting the doctor when they don’t feel good about how they look
• 25% of girls think they don’t look good enough without photo editing
While those statistics are scary, it’s not all doom and gloom! The report also highlighted the fact that 7 in 10 girls felt better for unfollowing idealised beauty content, and 80% of girls would like for their parents to talk to them about idealised beauty content.
Taryn Brumfitt was recently named as this year’s Australian of the Year for her work in the body image space. She says there is so much we can do to positively influence the young people in our lives and how they feel about themselves. She wants parents and those with influence over young people to recognise that kids hear and see everything, and in our homes we need to promote a safe space for them to flourish.
Our children look up to us. It is our job to model positive behaviour when it comes to the relationship we have with our bodies.
Body Image Movement and the Dove Self Esteem Project both have some great resources that can help you to discuss body image with young people, and it’s an important conversation to have.
As Taryn says, we need to be teaching our children to have a values system that is built on who they are and what they do, and that has nothing to do with what they look like. Embrace your uniqueness, embrace the individuality that you bring.
Shalom Open Day is on this Wednesday 15 March. The day will commence at 9.15am in the Sports Centre. This is a great opportunity for families to see Shalom in action on a normal day. Please let friends and family know who might be interested in enrolling their child at Shalom.
St Patrick and St Joseph – two of my favourite Saints! We celebrate St Patrick on Friday 17 March and St Joseph on Sunday 19 March. Two really good men who stood up to a challenge when they had to. We wish well the school communities of St Patrick’s Bundaberg and St Joseph’s Bundaberg and St Joseph’s Childers in the coming week.

If you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com
Study for Success: Editing Writing
Have you ever noticed that it is easier to spot an error in your writing after it has been printed, posted online, or sent in an email? This is a common experience for our students as well. When I give my students back their exams it’s not uncommon for them to shake their heads at their own mistakes. They certainly did not notice these errors at the time of writing!
The time pressure of exams can make it difficult to edit effectively. When it comes to preparing and submitting an assignment, however, that is not the case. Often it is tempting to simply type up a response, and submit it without checking, but any extra time spent checking a written response is a worthwhile investment in improving student grammatical structure, vocabulary, and punctuation.
Specific tips our teachers give students on this process include:
- Print out your writing and read it on the page, rather than on screen.
- Read your work out loud – to yourself or a trusted person. Make notes on what you hear.
- Take a break from your writing. Come back after a length of time and re-check it with fresh eyes.
As I tell my students, the eye reads what the brain thinks it wrote. The strategies above try to create some ‘distance’ from the work completed to allow the student to identify errors they may otherwise have skimmed over.
Read more on the success of reading out loud as a strategy to find errors here: https://www.learningscientists.org/blog/2022/10/20-1
Preparing for Assessment
As we approach the end of term many students will be working towards assessment. Parents are encouraged to work with their students to develop appropriate homework and study plans – the Record Book is a helpful tool for this purpose. A Homework Study Planner is included for each term (see p.44 and 45 for Term One). A monthly or term overview for your child’s study location at home is also a good strategy.
Parents can access upcoming assessment dates for their children via Sia. Each student has a “Due Work Calendar” that shows upcoming dates for checkpoints, drafts, and exams. To access this calendar for your child in the Sia Smartphone Application please select “My Shalom” and then “Due Work”. On the webpage, an option to select Due Work will show under your child’s photograph on the home page.
Learning Area Coordinators have assigned tasks in each faculty area and class teachers adapt these to specific days/lessons when applicable. Please be aware that some tasks with multiple components may be duplicated in the Due Work Calendar.
Academic Policies and Procedures
It is important to be aware that student assessment is regulated by Shalom’s Academic Policies and Procedures which can be found in the Student Record Book from page 13 to 26. This includes issues surrounding drafting, academic integrity, and non-submission.
Flowcharts outlining the processes required for students who miss an exam or wish to request an extension are on page 15 and 16. Please be aware that extensions need to be applied for in advance of the due date. Drafts are compulsory. Non-submission of a draft may lead to a student being asked to attend a Supplementary Session on Tuesday afternoon. Of particular importance is the requirement for evidence (eg. a medical certificate) for exams missed in all Year 11 and 12 subjects.
Please contact the Middle School Coordinator (Megan Munckton) megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com or Senior School Coordinator (Larissa Scoles) Larissa_Scoles@shalomcollege.com with any questions regarding assessment submission.

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours Monday to Friday 8.00am - 3.30pm. Tuesday office hours 8.30am - 3.30pm.

Project Compassion
Many of you will be familiar with the annual fundraising event ‘Project Compassion’. For over 55 years, Caritas Australia has worked hand in hand with the most marginalised and remote communities in Australia and overseas to confront the challenges of poverty. During Lent, money collected in the Project Compassion fundraising drive is used for this purpose. Throughout Lent, we encourage students to commit to justice with the simple act of giving. Project Compassion boxes can be found throughout the school and in Pastoral Care classrooms.
Year 12 students were presented with their senior ties during House Assemblies last week. Like the badges they received last week, these ties are an outward sign to our College Community that they accept the responsibilities that servant leadership brings. Servant leadership places the needs others at the centre of decision-making by incorporating the model of Jesus found in the Gospels.
Lingiari supports Phoenix House
Adam Palmer from Phoenix House spoke at the Lingiari House Assembly last week about the services and support they provide in our community. It was a good experience for the students who were able to find out more about their House Charity and how the fundraising Lingiari students do assist people in our town. During his visit, student representatives were also able to present Mr Palmer with their 2022 fundraising cheque.

Congratulations to Mackenzie. Mackenzie has really stamped herself as a leader for McCormack house this year. She has been to every leadership meeting and helped out at every event. At our fundraiser event earlier this term Mackenzie was the only student who showed up and helped sell our chocolates and did so with an amazing attitude. At our swimming carnival Mackenzie was in charge of making sure we had a swimmer in each event and did a great job in this role. Well done Mackenzie.
Parents and extended family are welcome to attend our College Assembly on Thursday 16 March at 11:30am where we will showcase many of our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students with costume, song, and dance to celebrate Harmony Week.
Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community. Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.
One of the goals of Harmony Week is to acknowledge our diverse national, ethnic and religious backgrounds to help build an inclusive society, and to acknowledge and celebrate the enduring principles of fairness, harmony and respect. This is certainly a priority here at Shalom College.
The theme for Harmony Week is 'Everyone Belongs'…may this always hold true for us here at Shalom College.
Shalom College is currently organising an inaugural Empowering Women’s Breakfast for Friday 5 May. At Shalom College we place great importance in recognising and supporting our young female students to reach their potential whether it is in the classroom, on the sporting field, on the stage or within industry. With the Empowering Women’s Breakfast, we hope to inspire the young women in the room to persevere when faced with difficulties that they encounter in life and empower them to be resilient and persistent when they endeavor to succeed in their chosen path. It will also be an opportunity to celebrate the great women in our lives and the great women in the lives of our students.
The 2023 event will include guest speakers Gretel Butea, (Australian Netball Diamonds, Queensland Firebirds and Commonwealth Games Netball medalist), Tanya O’Shea (Leadership Coach and Mentor) and other special guests. There will also be fundraising raffles with prizes including an Australian Diamond’s Netball dress, a signed Australian Diamond’s Netball and a signed Queensland Firebirds Netball.
Funds raised from the breakfast will go towards our female QISSN (Netball) and QISSRL (Rugby League) teams to financially support these young athletes to attend the 2023 carnivals.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from businesses to help sponsor the inaugural event.

“Any cognitive skill can be improved with practice, If girls are reading more outside of school—if they’re doing so out of an intrinsic motivation rather than because they have to—this provides them with thousands of hours of additional reading over the course of their development.”
“Give boys the right literature, that appeals to their tastes and interests, and you can quickly see changes in reading attitudes.” – David Reilly
Numerous research projects have indicated that boys do not generally possess a mindset that allows for a love of reading, that is that they are capable but not inclined to read. This same research informs that 75% of boys between the ages of nine and fourteen have a negative attitude towards reading and will choose not to if given the opportunity.
Following two major studies conducted in the UK, Keith Topping, professor of educational and social research at the University of Dundee in Scotland observed that
- Boys dedicate less time to processing words than girls do
- Boys are more inclined to skipping parts of the book or article
- Boys will often choose books that are beneath their reading levels
Psychologist and PhD candidate at Australia’s Griffith University has recently studied the disparity between the reading habits of boys and girls and says it is because of psychological factors such as self-awareness and relationship skills. He maintains, however, that boys will read and cultivate a love of reading if they are introduced to the right reading material.
We know that reading for pleasure is the basis for developing healthy study behaviours so encouraging children to develop a love of reading will nurture those habits.
Some great books aimed at engaging boys are the Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz, The Special Forces Cadets, Alpha Force, Red Code Adventure, and Agent 21 series by Chris Ryan, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series, and of course Rick Riordan’s mythological adventure series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Magnus Chase, Heroes of Olympus, Trials of Apollo, and Kane Chronicles.
