As a rapidly aging Australian male, I got really excited and then disappointed as I read the paper early last week. ‘The Australian’ reported a new treatment for cancer therapy that was described as ‘a total paradigm shift’ in cancer care. This new treatment called CARVYKTI, has been approved by the TGA. I was about to break it to my kids that I could be around for a lot longer than expected but then read that the treatment might be ready for use within ‘two or three decades’! I might miss that window of opportunity! That said, we now live in a world where getting a Cancer diagnosis does not carry the sense of imminent demise it once did. Treatments are so much better and more effective. Survivability rates for most cancers have greatly increased. Those advances have come because smart people have been researching the problems and funds have flowed to assist that research.
Last week I was very proud of our students, led by School Captains, Molly & Cooper, for leading the ‘Cut-A-Thon’ at Shalom. Students and the odd gullible Principal were prepared to get hair cuts to raise funds for Cancer research. That is how advances are made.
Molly led the charge on this and along with other girls donated some of their hair to assist in the creation of wigs for those suffering Cancer treatments (not sure mine was up to that standard!) The students raised almost $3000 for a wonderful cause. There is probably not a family at Shalom who have not been touched in some way by Cancer. It will remain a real health challenge for many years to come. I hope people will only grow more enthusiastic in supporting in very practical ways those who are at the cutting edge of research and development.
In this theme, this community will stand beside the McGarry family who are with their brave and beautiful Sienna, who really has a battle on her hands while undergoing treatment at the moment in Brisbane. Please keep Sienna and the McGarry family very much in your thoughts and prayers.
Legally Blonde played to very enthusiastic and appreciative audiences last week with the final show on Saturday night. Congratulations to all cast and crew. Just a great show. So much work went into those performances and months of practice. Another real highlight for the Shalom community.
Head of the River Rowing – in a very similar vein, our Rowers completed their school season very successfully yesterday at Bucca. Again, lots of training and effort paid off in so many outstanding results. Very grateful to Ms Teressa Tibbey & Mr Rod Silcox for coordinating the efforts of so many coaches, volunteers and rowers.

Important Dates - Term 3
- Friday 21 July: Personal Futures Day for all Year 10 students. This whole day program leads into the subject selection evening and SET Plan process for students entering Year 11 in 2024. It is important that all Year 10 students attend on this day.

This week we have two presenters coming to Shalom to work with our Year 8 and Year 10 students. David Kobler, who has been to Shalom many times in past years, is returning and he is bringing his colleague Beck Neale with him. David and Beck will provide an interactive presentation on some very real issues for young people.
The Year 8 session is about empowering young people to understand the gravity of the decisions they make online. The intention is to help teens navigate the digital world and understand how their decisions can affect both their current and future relationships.
The Year 10 presentation will address the question of, "How do I find, build and navigate healthy, happy and safe relationships?" This session will cover issues such as identity and consent.
We welcome David and Beck to the College, and we look forward to engaging in these topics.

The quiet achiever for McCormack house this week is Hannah L who is in Year 10. Hannah showed exceptional leadership during the Year 10 camps which were held recently at Chaverim. Hannah consistently put her hand up to help with anything that needed to be done, including setting up for breakfast one day all on her own. She was always happy to help and did so with a big smile on her face.

Bundaberg District Maths Teams Challenge
We are proud to share the exceptional achievements of the 50 Shalom students from Year 7 to 12 who competed across 10 teams at the Bundaberg District Maths Team Challenge on Wednesday 31 May.
A total of 325 students in 65 teams from 8 schools in the district participated in the competition in Junior (Year 7 and 8), Intermediate (Year 9 and 10) and Senior (Year 11 and 12) age divisions. The competition provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical ability as they work collaboratively as part of a team to solve challenging questions from many different areas of mathematics.
All Shalom students are commended for representing our school impressively by showcasing outstanding teamwork and problem-solving skills. We are especially proud of our Year 11 team consisting of Zain A, Charlie D, Kay H, Steven P and Bailey R for winning the Senior Division. Congratulations to this team on their exceptional performance!
Thanks also to the student supervisors who volunteered to supervise teams on the day as well as Mrs Rhonda Cutmore and Mrs Debbie Bishop for their organisational efforts. We are also appreciative of Shalom’s Mr Alan Pacey, who organised and convened this competition for the 8th successive year.
We look forward to seeing our students build on their success in next year’s competition and in further extra-curricular opportunities in mathematics.

Shalom is trialing the JSTOR Secondary Schools Collection until Wednesday 21 June 2023 for all students and staff.
The JSTOR Secondary Schools Collection is a package of more than 2,700 archival journals. All the main disciplines on the JSTOR platform are included, from literature and history to biology and mathematics.
Timely content focusing on emerging areas such as sustainability and international security and peace is also included. Journal issues start from the first issue and extend up to a publication date usually set in the past three to five years.
The Secondary Schools Collection also includes millions of primary sources from four individual collections, featuring pamphlets, manuscripts, letters, oral histories, government documents, images, 3D models, spatial data, type specimens, drawings, paintings, and more.
In addition, schools have access to more than 6,000 Open Access scholarly ebooks. Chapters are discoverable side by side with all the other content on JSTOR.
Why is JSTOR so important for schools?
JSTOR is widely respected by major universities for its quality and functionality and provides the same content to your students that they will encounter in university or college. Learning to use JSTOR during secondary school gives students added confidence and prepares them for the rigours of university research, while enabling teachers to incorporate important scholarly content into their classes.
JSTOR also provides an easy-to-use platform with a suite of tools for research and study. To date, more than 1,500 secondary schools subscribe to JSTOR via JCS Online Resources.
You are welcome to log in and check out what JSTOR has to offer:

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
We are seeking your help!! We are always in need of new volunteers for the Markets Tuckshop and BBQ. If your child/children would like to gain some work experience, why not get them to volunteer in the canteen. If you have a few hours you could spare to assist in our canteen, please click on the link below to register your assistance or contact Leanne via email at barkerl@shalomcollege.com.
If we get enough volunteers, it may work out that you only need to volunteer once per term.
