The Voice referendum, whichever way it goes, will be a defining social feature for Australia for years to come. I worried though, that many of our first time voters at Shalom still think any mention of ‘The Voice’ is a reference to a TV show!
I am disappointed that some on both sides of the debate have chosen to ‘muddy the waters’ with inaccurate, unhelpful, and sometimes, disrespectful commentary. We desperately need an electorate that is informed on this issue and prepared to let go of politics and engage in respectful discussions. Some on the ‘No’ side resort to fear and exaggeration in seeking support. I have heard it argued that if we vote ‘Yes’ for the Voice this will automatically lead to Treaty or Compensation. This is not what the Voice is or can do. I have also seen the claim that a successful vote for the Voice will divide the country along racial lines. If the Minister for Education is correct when he says, “A young indigenous man is more likely to be jailed than receive a University degree”, it would appear our society is already very divided along racial lines. Those on the ‘Yes’ side inaccurately describe anyone who might choose to vote ‘No’ as a racist.
My view on this issue and others, is not determined by my faith background but it is informed by what the Bishops and Pope Francis have to say. The Australian Catholic Bishops, in speaking to us on the Voice remind us that, “This is an important moment in the history of the nation, and it can help us to move towards a deep and just reconciliation. It also offers a mechanism to improve the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. We urge all Australians to engage in the debate productively, respecting each other and accepting that people may, in good faith, have differing concerns and perspectives. We are an open democracy, and this is a moment to use our democratic institutions to produce a high-quality debate shaped by a genuine concern to do justice and bring healing to First Nations Peoples…To guide all Australians at this important time, we encourage everyone to read and discuss the Uluru Statement from the Heart..”
Pope Francis, in his encyclical Laudato Si’ says: ‘It is essential to show special care for indigenous communities and their cultural traditions. They are not merely one minority among others, but should be the principal dialogue partners, especially when large projects affecting their land are proposed.’
We will have a lot of first time voters in our Year 12 class this year. I hope and pray that each of them work hard to inform themselves on both sides of the issue. I hope everyone does that – sincerely.
Some of our young voters will hear some say, 'if you don't know, vote NO'. I would hope that young and old voters won't be content with 'not knowing' but would do the research necessary to find out! At Shalom, we won’t tell our students what to think. Instead, we will try to offer the intellectual skills and character development that will allow each of them to decide what is right, just, and true. We won’t tell any young person what to think but we will try to teach each of them, how to think.
Attached again, are two chapters from Fr Frank Brennan’s book, “An Indigenous Voice to Parliament: Considering a Constitutional Bridge”, presents two chapters that outline the case for a ‘Yes’ vote and the case for a ‘No’ vote. Both chapters feature the thoughts of First Nations people. If, like me, you have a first time voter in your house, I strongly suggest you get them to read and reflect on this.

Inter-School Chess Competition
CHESS GOLD!!
“Chess holds its master in its own bonds, shaking the mind and brain so that the inner freedom of the very strongest must suffer.” (Albert Einstein)
On Tuesday 2 August, a team of 21 players travelled to Avoca State School to represent Shalom in the Term 3 Inter-School Chess Competition. This particular competition had the added incentive of being the Regional Championships, where the winning team qualifying for the State Championships. Despite having some impressive second and third place results, Shalom has not won a competition for a couple of years.
This run was broken this year by the Shalom Black team, who won the Premier Division on the day taking the gold medal – an outstanding achievement! The team of Callum M, Waylen H, JJ W and Seth G played some excellent chess on the day to take out the division by 1.5 points. Special mention must go to Callum M and JJ W, who both won 6 of their 7 games. JJ W won the medal for the best player in his position from all the schools while Waylen H and Callum M won a merit ribbon, showing the depth and teamwork by these talented players. These players will now play in the State Championships in Term 4 – good luck boys!!
Their success was helped by the Premier Division Shalom Blue team of Luke R, Kahn A, Alex M and Lachlan B, who played some good chess, and importantly, defeated some of the better player from other schools, allowing our Shalom Black team to consolidate their win. Great teamwork boys!
Shalom displayed its considerable depth in chess with some quality players in the Open Division. All three Shalom teams were in medal contention, however, the team of Shalom Yellow featuring young guns Tyler P, Max L, Zach G and Will M took out the bronze medal on the day. This result is particularly pleasing as the oldest in the team is in Year 8, which is promising for Shalom chess in future years. Max L and Zach G also were awarded merit ribbons for their impressive performances.
The Shalom Red team of Jonathon E, Harry L, Max C and Luca H and well as the Shalom White team of Jacob B, Nicota F, Jack M and Robert G were very close to taking out a medal as well. Cameron Z also played some fantastic chess on the day winning 4 of his games. Merit ribbons were awarded to Harry L, Jabob B and Nicota F, a just reward for some good performances.
To see the results in their entirety, including both team and individual results, follow the link: https://gardinerchess.com.au/event-results/inter-school-competition-results/?_region=wide-bay-north&_term=3 . If you wish to keep in touch with all things Shalom Chess, then follow our Sia Chess Group page (https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/homepage/6024).
If you are interested in playing or learning chess, then you are more than welcome to join us at chess club on Tuesdays from 11.25am-12.00pm in Beerarlem. We would love to see you there.

On Wednesday 2 August, 10 students from both Year 9 and 10 volunteered to compete in the 2023 Readers Cup. The competition consisted of 12 teams from local schools and 117 teams statewide. The Readers Cup is a state wide competition organised by the Queensland Branch of the Childrens Book Council Australia for young readers to get together and read a set of books. The competition has been running for 6 years in the WideBay, and in 2020 a state final was introduced for the winners of the local tournament.
This year the books chosen were “We Who Hunt the Hollow”, “The Stand In”, “Green Rising” and the favourite of all “I Must Betray You”. Both teams did their very best to answer the questions given and ended with some very close scores, with St Lukes taking the win with 79.5 points. Our Shalom Teams finished 6th and 11th overall against this tough competition.
On behalf of all the students who competed I would like to say a very big thank you to Kepnock State High School for organising the event to be held at there school, as well as supplying snacks and lunch. I would also like to thank Ms Davis and Mrs Parton for lending us their time and effort to coach both teams and travel with us on the day. And lastly, I would like to give a huge thank you to Mrs Wooldridge for organising Shalom to compete and being our biggest supporter. And of course, I wouldn’t be saying this without the wonderful students who volunteered their time to join in this amazing opportunity.
Congratulations to both teams (Addison L, Lara M, Joann J, Matilda H, Emily P, Sophie W, Sophie N, Hannah P, Callum M and Noah K) for being a part of this story.

Last week our Year 7 students participated in an excursion to the Mon Repos Turtle Centre. This excursion was a combined CSA and CSB event which focused on student learning across three subjects - English, Geography and Science. Spending time at the Turtle Centre and interacting with the Mon Repos staff was a great way to engage students and build their understanding of turtle conservation. As well as learning about relevant Science and Geography, students also participated as 'journalists-in-training'. In English this term students are learning about feature articles and will draw on their Mon Repos experience when writing their own article. We were lucky to have warm weather for all three days of the excursions.

Sentence Types for Engaging and Dynamic Writing
Varying sentence structure and style is crucial in developing strong writing skills. Encouraging your children to explore and use a range of sentence types will not only make their writing more engaging but also enhance their ability to communicate effectively. At Shalom College, we utilise Dr. Ian Hunter's Eight Sentence Types, which encompass a range of structures to enhance students' writing skills. These sentence types include:
- The Very Short Sentence:
- Family matters most.
- The W-Start:
- Whereas others played Rugby League after school, I studied Dance and Drama.
- Adverb at the Front:
- Interestingly, Mon Repos has the most significant Loggerhead Turtle nesting population in the South Pacific Ocean region.
- Em Dash:
- His parents never missed a game - they were always supportive.
- Verb Beginnings:
- Dancing under the spotlight, she shined.
- Explore the Subject:
- Rugby league, a sport deeply rooted in Australian culture, became my passion.
- Prepositional:
- On weekends, my family and I attended church services in the heart of Bundaberg.
- Paired-Double:
- Family life in Bundaberg was peaceful, and the community was tightly knit.
Your students’ are enhancing their written expression using different sentence types and punctuation marks in their writing. By reinforcing these skills at home, you will contribute to their growth as confident and skilled writers.

Our latest news is that in a closely contested race our two senior (Years 9 & 10) Readers’ Cup teams came in 6th and 11th and our resident chess team were awarded gold for the first time in a few years. Congratulations to all involved.
Budding authors have had a chance to feature in our Shalom Literary Wonders anthology with their literary masterpieces. The theme is ‘Locally Grown’ and the short story or poetry submissions will be judged by Ms Freeman, Ms Scoles, and Mr Crowley. The winners will be announced at the end of our First Draft event on Friday 11 August by guest author and former Shalom student: Ben Connelly.
Then in the last week of August, we will be celebrating Children’s Book Week in the library. The theme for 2023 is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire’ and several activities have been organised to fit around that theme.

All Schools Oztag
Recently many of our students attended the Oztag All Schools competition, we had 104 children complete in 7 teams. The weekend saw over 240 teams compete in over 330 games per day. All the Shalom teams fought hard and were rewarded with making the finals - our best result for this carnival to date.
The teamwork shone through in the Year 7 girls’ team, many of whom were new to the sport. With 3 wins and a draw in the round games the girls went into the semi-finals with enthusiasm. They played a competitive game but ultimately lost to Kawana State High School. The girls promoted the school wonderfully and played with determination and passion. Their coach Miss Cook was thrilled with the increase in both skills and confidence that each of the players has had throughout the season.
The youth and excitement of the Year 7 boys’ team was a key component to them reaching the quarter finals. They won 3 our of the 6 rounds played, but unfortunately lost their quarter final to Keebra Park SHS. The boys worked hard as a team and played with spirit and courage throughout the tournament. Their coach and manager were proud of how much improvement was seen from these players throughout the season.
Throughout the tournament the Year 8 boys grew in skill and confidence. Their coach Ryan Marsh found their ability to support each other both on and off the field a credit and asset to themselves. They successfully completed the round games with 4 convincing wins, but unfortunately lost in the quarter finals against Mountain Creek SHS.
The Year 8/9 girls had a fantastic weekend! After finishing day one 5th on the ladder, they came into day 2 with an eagerness to show what they’ve worked hard for. They played the top 2 teams, winning both and had a win in their final game for the day, placing them 3rd on the ladder. Day 3 and into Semi Finals, with an intense game against Varsity Secondary College fighting for the Grand Final. With a draw at half time, the final score was a narrow loss at 5-3. Coach Erin Mitchell and Manager Taila Saint are very proud of the effort and dedication from all the girls.
The coach of the Year 10 boys team Riley Gill, spoke of how well the boys worked together to support each other and dig deep when it was most needed. Throughout the round games the boys had many close games and 2 great wins. In the quarter finals the boys worked hard but unfortunately lost to Morayfield State High School. The boys positive attitude promoted the school values and they all played with grit and a desire to win.
Congratulations to our Open Boys Oztag team who were undefeated and narrowly lost the grand final in a thriller. The 12 players were dominant in the pool games winning 6 from 6, banking 50 tries. They defeated Caloundra in the semi-finals only to be beaten by Marymount in the Grand Final. The coach Mr Gahan was impressed by the boy’s determination and teamwork throughout the carnival. They were wonderful ambassadors for Shalom College as several officials complimented their teamwork and sportsmanship.
Congratulations also are extended to our Open Girls Oztag team who worked extremely hard to reach the grand final in their division. The team is made up of Year 10, 11 & 12 students so this outcome is even more impressive as they completed against teams of mostly grade 12 students. The girls were runners up after losing to Marymount College. The teamwork and determination of these young ladies throughout the tournament was outstanding and shone through in each game. A special congratulations goes to Taylor D who was awarded MVP of the division.
Well done to all of our students, coaches, managers and parents on a wonderful weekend.

Bundaberg Rowing Club Regatta Success
Congratulations to our Shalom Rowers that competed in the local club regatta on Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 of July. It was a great weekend of racing with perfect conditions. The rowers had lots of fun rowing in different boats and mixing up their crews with other Bundaberg rowers in our region. Even, I, their oarsome Coordinator, took on the challenge and rowed in an 8. It has been a few years between regattas for me but, I still survived to tell the tale and even scored a medal.
Our rowers won lots of bling over the 2 days with 13 Gold, 12 Silver and 8 Bronze. Emily E, Montana W, Zander D, were part of the crews that took out The Ross Barnes Memorial Trophy, while Sam C and Zac W were part of crew that won The Callaghan Cup and even scored some prize money.
Thank you again to all the parents that helped out over the weekend. It takes lots of time to organise, set up and pack up our boats, so we appreciate all your support.
Our rowers are looking forward to the Bridge to Bridge Regatta next weekend (12 & 13 August) and then the big State School Championship on the Saturday 16 - Monday 18 September.
To help fundraise for a new heavy weight double and single, we will be running a Father’s Day Raffle soon. If there are any businesses or families out there that can donate some prizes, let me know. Or even sponsor us to help financially contribute to our new boats, that would be greatly appreciated. A new double cost approximately $13,500 and single $8,000 so our equipment is very expensive and is in need of urgent updating as our current heavy weight double is over 20 years old.
