Pope Francis is different and he is calling the Church to be the best it can be. His leadership is encouraging people to start conversations about faith and meaning. Not uncommonly, I talk to people who do not ‘officially’ align at all or any more with the Catholic Church but who do obviously buy into the vision of Christianity that Francis is offering. A Church that is not full of itself or fixated on power or position or privilege. Like the Church in Mongolia. The Bundaberg Catholic Parish is offering a course, to be run at Shalom, for anyone interested in connecting, or re-connecting with a faith journey. It is called the Alpha program.
On Thursday, 5th October, in the Waterford Building, Shalom College, beginning at 5.30pm, our parish will begin Alpha in a Catholic Context. All are welcome to this first session which may begin to answer some of your questions about God, Jesus, life and more.
School Fees 2024 – fees, not surprisingly, will have to rise in 2024. Again, we have tried to keep these increases as low as possible. Staff costs are always our biggest cost and those have increased significantly next year with a 4% increase and a 3% cost of living increase along with increased Superannuation. All that said, a comparison between the fees at Shalom and those for a comparable school will see ours more than competitive. We try to make our school fee an inclusive one. Parents are not asked to pay for camps, curriculum related excursions, pool entries, local bus fares etc. We are enormously grateful to all of those families who do their very best to meet their financial commitment to the College on time. As always, if there are difficulties, please make a time to speak with me.

Subject Selection Forms for 2024
Parents could you please have your Year 8 or Year 9 student return their signed subject selection form. We are cross checking these with the electronic selections; there are still a lot of the forms outstanding.
Year 9 Students - Essential Core Offer for Year 10 2024
Last week a small number of Year 9 parents received an email from me with the invitation for their student to be placed into some Essential Core classes in Year 10. Parents could you please ensure that you have checked your emails in case you received an invitation for your child. Thank you to those parents who have responded already to let me know you are NOT taking up this offer.
Please email me directly if you wish to ‘opt out’ of this offer and keep your student enrolled in the General level of the Core classes listed in the email. We would like to have these offers finalised by the end of this week so that we can start looking at timetabling these classes.
Year 11
This is a timely reminder to parents and student regarding assessment in the senior school. If a student does not submit a final response to an assessment and where evidence of student progress is available (draft or classwork), teachers will make judgments based on this. If a student provided no evidence on or before the due date, and no other evidence is available, a student will receive a ‘Not Rated’. This will mean no credit can be given towards their QCE for that unit of learning. This will mean a loss of 1 or more QCE credit.
Senior assessment is bound by QCAA guidelines around Academic Integrity and Assessment processes, your student may miss the opportunity to complete assessment if their absence does not relate to an approved absence, unforeseen illness, or misadventure. Student undertaking Vocational Placement, Work Experience or other pathway opportunities must attend school for scheduled exams regardless of these days.

Year 12 Mock Exam Block
Attached is the Year 12 Mock Exam Block Timetable (Monday 4 - Friday 15 September). Students need only attend school for the exams they are to sit during this time, however, students who are behind in their schoolwork may be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

ALPHA Program
Please see the following information provided by the Parish, regarding the upcoming Alpha Program that we will host in the Waterford Building starting Thursday 5 October.
Alpha is a faith discovery program that originally begun in London 30 years ago. It is now in 169 countries throughout the world and has been experienced by 29 million guests.
Having conversations about faith, life and Jesus can be hard. But it doesn’t have to be. Alpha creates a space where our friends, family, and neighbours can explore the Christian faith and the meaning of life in a way that is relaxed and respectful.
The format is simple. Over several weeks guests gather to have a meal together, hear a talk on the Christian faith and then have a discussion together in small groups. For so many people Alpha was the catalyst that began, or restored, their faith in Jesus Christ.
On Thursday 5 October, in the Waterford Building, Shalom College, beginning at 5.30pm, our parish will begin Alpha in a Catholic Context. All are welcome to this first session which may begin to answer some of your questions about God, Jesus, life and more.
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. The Year 8 classes will be hosting over the next few weeks:
• Wednesday 13 September Mr Blinco's 8.2 and Mrs Somerfield's 8.7
• Wednesday 11 October Mr Kiernan's 8.3 and 8.9

McCormack’s quiet achiever is Paige W. Paige has gone above and beyond in her commitment to McCormack House this year from participating in sports days and Shalom day while encouraging others to do so as well. She create's videos for our House assemblies and SIA page and generally showing what House spirit should look like. Paige does a lot of work behind the scenes for McCormack House that many students would not see, so I wanted to take the time to thank her for her commitment to making McCormack an amazing house to be part of.
At week 9 College Assembly we acknowledged the achievements of both a student and staff member in the area of STEM. Shalom College students participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities throughout the year in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Shalom’s Inaugural Men’s Wellness Breakfast
A HUGE THANK YOU to those that attended Shalom’s Inaugural Men’s Wellness Breakfast on Thursday 31 August.
With raffles, big breakfast, and guest speaker Darius Boyd it was a fantastic morning.
A HUGE THANK YOU to our Major Sponsors; FootMotion - Bundaberg, The Waves Sports Club and Rum City Foods. The event and money raised would not have been possible without their generous support.
Just over $3,000 was raised for Brave Brothers, which will go towards local initiatives to support men’s mental health.
More photos from the event can be found on our website: https://www.shalomcollege.com/news/mens-breakfast/

We recently announced the winners of the Shalom College Literary Wonders writing competition in a small ceremony in Beerarlem library.
The winning entry for the Year 7-9 Poetry category is Laylah J, and her work is featured here:
Four, Six, Seven, Zero
In a Queensland town where sunbeams dance,
Where golden sands meet the ocean's glance,
A place of charm where nature's wonders gleam,
In this coastal gem, a local dream.
Where sugarcane fields stretch far and wide,
As paddocks paint the countryside,
From the earth's embrace, a sweetness unfolds,
Nurtured by hands, generations old.
Amidst the fields, a spirit takes flight,
A famed elixir, amber and bright,
Crafted with care, the liquid gold is born,
A symbol of heritage cherished and worn.
Beyond the fields, the ocean's embrace,
Revealing treasures, nature's showcase,
Mon Repos, where turtles come to nest,
A marvel to witness, a sight that’s blessed.
Beneath the waves, a vibrant world unfolds,
The Great Barrier Reef, a sight to behold,
With colours so vivid, life's tapestry unfurls,
A symphony of creatures, and a dance of pearls.
In the heart of town, a thriving beat,
A community united, where friends will meet,
From local markets to festivals grand,
A vibrant spirit, felt across the land.
So come explore this coastal retreat,
Where nature and heritage joyfully meet,
A Queensland Gem where dreams come true,
Let the local grown magic inspire you.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
We are seeking your help!! We are always in need of new volunteers for the Markets Tuckshop and BBQ. If your child/children would like to gain some work experience, why not get them to volunteer in the canteen. If you have a few hours you could spare to assist in our canteen, please click on the link below to register your assistance or contact Leanne via email at barkerl@shalomcollege.com.
If we get enough volunteers, it may work out that you only need to volunteer once per term.
