This week we’ll see young people around the streets ‘trick or treating’ as a part of Halloween celebrations. At the risk of being called a ‘grouch’, I hate Halloween! That said, I love the authentic celebration of the ‘eve of All Hallows’ while hating how it has been hijacked by confectionary companies and other vested interests. In our Catholic and Christian traditions, this week, we celebrate the feast day of All Saints on 1 November and All Souls on 2 November.
These are great traditions. On the feast day of All Saints we remember all of those heroic women and men who are recognised as Saints - St Francis, Mary MacKillop and thousands of others. On the feast day of All Souls, the eve of which is ‘Halloween’, is the celebration of the lives of all those other folk who we have loved and who have inspired us and who we believe are now with God. I love remembering the people in my life who I have loved and who have loved me, who are no longer with us. I will remember my Mum & Dad, my little brother Tim along with lots of others who have inspired me, like our Shalom heroes - James Kiernan, Br Rochford, Ed Bowen and Kerry Bolam.
Through faith, we remain connected with those who have been part of our lives. Somehow, over the years, ‘Halloween’ has subverted this connection to ‘playfully’ link this to ghosts and goblins. So, over the next couple of nights, I will turn the lights off in my house, have the dog on patrol and the door locked in the hope that the wonderful neighbouring children will avoid my residence! But, whilst sitting in the dark, I will be drawing inspiration from my favourite Saints - Edmund Rice & Catherine McAuley, amongst others and I will be gratefully remembering the outstanding people in my life who have loved, inspired and challenged me to be a better person than I would have otherwise been.Building Better @ Shalom – last week I shared with the students on Assembly some of our Master Planning goals. The link below will take you to an Architect’s view of a new classroom block that we hope to start on early next year. We have not yet come up with a definite name for the building and we will have fingers crossed that the tender prices come in at something that is within our budget. The new building is to be built along similar lines to the Waterford building but designed for senior school studies. Work on the new ovals is progressing well at the moment.

Year 11 Exam Block – 22 November – 24 November
Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from 22 - 24 November. Students participating in this exam block will begin Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Year 12 Graduation Liturgy and Farewell
On Friday, 20 October our Year 12 cohort was officially farewelled through prayer and ritual. Our Welcome to Country was given by Uncle Willie Broome, before the students, and their guests, enjoyed a celebration of prayer and song as well as the presentation of certificates. As I said at the ceremony, as they move on from Shalom we pray that they will make a difference in the communities they belong to. We hope that they will see the uniqueness of the gifts that they possess and see value in sharing these gifts to better the lives of others. We are also confident that they will use what they have learnt during their time here to lead positive change in our world. The graduation sashes, gifted by the Parents and Friends Association and presented by each House Coordinator, looked vibrant as the students walked through the Guard of Honour following the ceremony.
Giving Tree Assembly
The annual ‘Giving Tree’ Assembly is coming up on the Thursday, 9 November.
This event is always a highlight of the year. All students and staff are asked to give what they can, by bringing in an unwrapped toy, gift card, or cash donation. The proceeds of this event benefits two organisations each Christmas. Firstly, contributions are distributed to those in need in our local community by the St Vincent de Paul Society. Secondly, as we have done in recent years, some of the gifts are taken to Woorabinda Mission to assist Sister Cecilia’s work in that community.
Donations for Woorabinda Mission
We are having our yearly fundraiser in support of Woorabinda Mission.
Sr Cecilia from Woorabinda has requested the following items: tablecloths, sheets, towels, cutlery, child-sized football boots, board shorts, t-shirts, or dress-ups in good condition. If you have an excess of any of these items, please consider donating them to this worthy cause. If you don’t have a surplus of any of these items, please consider a monetary donation so we are able to purchase whatever is needed. Donations may be left at Shalom College before Wednesday 15 November. Thank you so much or your generosity.

Film, Television and New Media Screening
“Every time I go to the Movies, it's magic, no matter what the movie’s about.” Steven Spielberg
Shalom senior Film, Television and New Media classes celebrated the culmination of all their hard work on Wednesday night in the Performing Arts Precinct, with a screening of different student’s film projects. Our teacher of senior Film, Television and New Media, Ms Jacqui Smith, invited friends and family to come along and watch the different styles and genres created this year. From the horror films of the year 11’s to the abstract experimental films of our Year 12’s, there was a large range of films to watch. A great night was had by all and it was wonderful to see their work up on the big screen.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
