Well, Week 1 done and dusted. We had a smooth but busy start to 2024. It was great to see young people back at Shalom. There will still be some nerves and wrinkles to work out but there are always people here ready and willing to assist. Over the last few weeks we’ve watched the path of many of our 2023 graduating class. We were very proud of their outcomes and feel confident that they will be confident moving into their futures. Our students achieved some very pleasing results last year.
The first slide looks at the career destinations of the 2022 cohort:
The second slide outlines the number of VET qualifications achieved by the 2023 class:
Below is a summary of the ATAR results for the 2023 class:
Again, we are very pleased with the data above. In 2023, we had 118 Year 12 students who were eligible to receive an ATAR. Of those, 107 gave us permission to view their results and the table above reflects the data to which we have access.
Afternoon Pick Up – the first week of school is always incredibly busy in our carparks after school. I’m hoping that more parents will quickly realise that getting their child a spot on a bus home or to a less congested part of town is infinitely preferable to sitting in a queue in our carparks. However, for those who choose to use the main carpark in front of Administration, if you are picking up your child, the only place to do so is in front of Admin. PLEASE DO NOT park on the other side of Br Hogan Drive and wait for your child to come to you. That situation creates too great a danger for children crossing Br Hogan Drive and dodging buses and cars.
We got to welcome 270 Year 7 students last week along with 35 new students from Year 8-12. We also welcomed nine new teachers, two back from Maternity Leave, fourteen Gap Year staff and three new staff undertaking Traineeships at the College. That is a huge and significant ‘shot in the arm’ for the Shalom community. We look forward to the positive difference each of those new members will make to our community. I hope that they all feel very welcome. Click on the link below to see the faces of new staff who may be teaching your child this year. Very happy to have back with us Ms Anita Stewart and Ms Bree Broadhurst from Maternity Leave.
Clothing Store – we are very aware that the clothing store did not work as well as we would have liked prior to the school year commencing. We have a number of factors to work through – lots of new students, product not being available, second hand uniform availability etc. The Clothing Store at Shalom is a significant enterprise and we need to work on doing this better. I am enormously appreciative of your patience and forbearance.
Mr Dan McMahon
Principal
mcmahond@shalomcollege.com
Welcome back to all our families and a big welcome to our new 2024 Shalom families. This year is set to be another wonderful and busy year at the college.
Key staff who support our students are:
• Dean of Senior School - Mrs Allen
• Dean of Middle School - Mrs Munckton
• Dean of Inclusive Learning - Mrs Staley
• Pathways Coordinator - Mrs O’Donnell
• Dean of Student Welfare - Mr Robinson and Mr Eke
We look forward to working together in partnership with you and all our staff to assist your student/s in the best way possible.
Subject Changes
Year 11 students and parents were advised of this process and timeline. Reminder students and parents can access the interview booking sheet via SIA. Deadline for changes is this Friday 2 February.
Students in Year 9 and 10 can apply for an elective subject change by visiting the office of Mrs Munckton and Mrs Allen by this Thursday 1 February at either lunch or afternoon tea.
Students who wish to apply for a program amendment (study) due to an external course such as TAFE, a Traineeship or SUN, need to see Ms O'Donnell for the application form. These changes will not be processed until your course begins.
Middle School
Year 7 and Year 9 students will sit the NAPLAN online tests from Wednesday 13 March – Monday 25 March. There will be an opportunity for students to participate in practice NAPLAN tests leading into the testing period.
If you have any concerns about NAPLAN or if you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Dean of Middle School, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com.
Please note: all students MUST have corded headphones or earphones to undertake the NAPLAN Online testing. This is the responsibility of families to ensure that students have their earphones or headphones for all test days, including the practice test. These headphones/earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. Wireless headphones (e.g., Apple air pods) are not compatible. If you need to purchase headphones or earphones, we suggest you do this as soon as possible. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6.

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Garden of Life
At the Academic Assembly last Thursday, I shared that the 2024 theme for our significant prayer services will be ‘Garden of Life’. This theme is inspired by the 2015 encyclical Laudato si' which explores the relationship between God, humans, and the environment. In particular, we would like to recapture an awareness of the interconnectedness of creation, and to develop an understanding of Eco spirituality, in our increasingly technology driven community.
At the conclusion of Laudato si', Pope Francis wrote this prayer which I shared at Assembly last week. It effectively encompasses the main ideas that we will draw on throughout the year.
A prayer for our earth
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe
and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love,
that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live
as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor,
help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth,
so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives,
that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts
of those who look only for gain
at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing,
to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united
with every creature
as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day.
Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle
for justice, love and peace.

2024 Immunisation program for Year 7 and Year 10
Shalom College is participating in Queensland Health’s annual School Immunisations Program. Participating students are required to return the completed forms by 2 February 2024 to the boxes provided in the Student Reception in the College main office. Any late forms will need to be returned to Ozcare directly. Only students with a signed and completed consent card, indicating ‘Yes to Vaccination’ will be vaccinated.

Queensland Indoor Hockey National Titles
Congratulations to Courtney K and Sophie A for representing the Queensland Flare U/13 Indoor Hockey Team at the National titles in Canberra.
The girls had a very successful tournament. Both Courtney and Sophie received “Player of the Match” awards for various games, and Sophie picked up the “Coaches Award” for the tournament.
The team finished the tournament in equal first position, but as there were no finals (round robin comp), they were relegated to 2nd place on goal differences. There were 7 states competing.
Both Sophie and Courtney tied for 3rd top goal scorers for the tournament with five goals each.
Great achievement Courtney and Sophie.

Shalom Teams in State Table Tennis Tournament
On Friday 1 December 2023, two Shalom teams competed in the Under 15 (Junior) Division of the Queensland Schools State Table Tennis Championship in Brisbane. Lincoln C and Oscar Q competed in the boys competition, while Christina L and Meredith S competed in the girls. Both teams had previously competed well at the local Bundaberg championship on 4 November to earn the right to compete in the state titles.
The boys team played in a tough pool of three – one team went on to claim overall honours for the Junior Boys; the other claimed gold in Division 2. Lincoln and Oscar played very well, with Lincoln not losing a singles game for the tournament. However, they were not able to get a victory and were relegated to Division 3. In this division, the Shalom boys dominated and easily claimed gold – beating two other teams in three matches each.
The Shalom Girls were an unstoppable force in the Junior Girls competition. Playing in a round robin against all other teams (including Open Girls), they beat two schools by five matches to nil. Their closest game was against local rivals St Lukes, which they won three matches to two. Overall, Christina and Meredith went through the day undefeated to claim gold in Junior Girls. This is the second year in a row for Christina to win the School State Junior Girls. Well done girls!!
Congratulations to both teams. Thanks go to Dave Delpratt from Bundaberg Table Tennis for his dedication in supporting students participating in table tennis over many years.

Rowing Come Try Sessions
Time to try a new sport? Like an individual and team sport? Enjoy being around water? Rowing could be the sport for your child.
Rowing is a unique school team sport that is only offered in high school. Shalom has a strong rowing team and is looking for new recruits. Training is 2-3 times a week on the river at different times (generally juniors in the afternoon & seniors in the morning). There is also extra land training available after school at the gym and with the rowing machines. The team competes in 5-6 regattas a year with all the local regattas held at Bucca and some at Rockhampton. There is a yearly fee due to boats, facilities, maintenance and insurance. Shalom Rowing is a fun family orientated group that is involved in all aspects of rowing – coaching, fundraising, maintenance, cleaning etc. Rowing is an all over body workout that not only builds students physically but supports their mental, emotional and social growth and development.
If your child is interested in trying our oarsome sport, please sign on to one of our sessions using the link below. We will then hold a parent information evening on Tuesday 13th Feb 7pm in Loyola. We are also holding a rowing machine challenge in the school gym during the lunch breaks on Mondays and Wednesday in Week 2 & 3. There are prizes for the fastest junior boy and girl, and senior boy and girl.
Looking forward to seeing this oarsome team grow. Any questions or for more information don’t hesitate to contact us.

Responsible use of digital devices webinar
Join the free, live webinar with Susan McLean from CyberSafety Solutions next Wednesday 7 February 7pm-8pm
Catholic School Parents Queensland warmly invite all Catholic School Parents, Carers, Principals & School Staff to join us on a live Webinar with Susan McLean from CyberSafety Solutions.
This is a FREE WEBINAR hosted by CSPQ to support our families in Catholic Schools.
This informative webinar will look at the issue of ‘phone bans’ in schools and provide information to support the importance of this occurring.
