Culture is such an important building block for any organisation. Shalom is no different. Culture can be described as, ‘the way we do things around here’. What we value and what we don’t value. Last week, we had over 20% of our student population involved in various ANZAC Day commemorations. We obviously value that presence. We value students being here and being involved. In 2022, at the end of Term 1, our Attendance rate was 86%. Last year, it was 90%. This year, at the same time, it is 92%. This year we had 1200 students attend the College Swimming Carnival compared to 900 the previous year and 700 the year before. We value presence and participation! I am so grateful to the parents who support us in this and do all that they can to have their child at school every day, on time, dressed well and ready to go.
We value positive behaviour and it is a clear expectation that every person in this community will be treated respectfully 24/7 and 365 days a year. We value and expect that students will arrive at class ready to learn and willing to participate positively. The Responsible Thinking Process has been a very positive addition at Shalom. If students are unable to contribute positively to the learning dynamic in a classroom, they choose to remove themselves to the RTC room. At the end of Term 1 in 2023, we had 301 visits to the RTC (multiple visits from some students). To the end of Term 1 this year, we had 136 visits. That is a very positive change and it contributes much to building a great culture.
The changes we have made to mobile phone usage at the College have been positive each year. Students are now used to placing their phones in the classroom ‘caddy’ at the start of each lesson. Students are free to use their phones before the first bell and after the last one. The only other times are with the express permission of a teacher.
In the business world there is a piece of wisdom that says, ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast’. That is certainly true in schools. If we don’t have a great culture and the community supporting that, all the other things we do are pretty pointless. I really appreciate how many parents and families actively support our culture.
Libby Trickett – Olympian – at Shalom – I hope that Monday May 13 is in your diaries and that you get a group together to buy tickets to this wonderful event. The booking link is: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1216855
Domestic Violence – we’ve seen a lot in the news over the weekend about the rise in awareness, and horror, at the increasing rates of domestic violence. In Bundaberg, Edon Place, do wonderful work in this space. This Wednesday evening (1/5), at 5.30pm, there is a Candle Lighting ceremony to honour the memory of victims. All are welcome. I will be encouraging a big Shalom presence, as we had last year, at the local ‘walk’ on the morning of Friday May 24 (7am-8am). More to follow on that.

Year 10 Information
This week in PDE all our Year 10 students will complete the registration process for their myQCE Student Portal Account. Students must register for this account in preparation for years 11 and 12. They will require this account during the Year 10 Personal Futures Day next term and for activities throughout this year.
Year 12 Alternate Venue - External Examinations
QCAA envisage that all our Year 12 students will sit their scheduled external examinations at Shalom College. These exams run from Monday 21 October –Tuesday 12 November. The exam timetable will be released by QCAA later this term.
If there is any exceptional circumstance as to why your child cannot complete their QCAA external exams here at the College, please contact Mrs Norris as soon as possible to discuss this. It is a requirement of QCAA that an alternate venue must be identified so that extraordinary arrangements can be made ahead of time. We are required to apply to QCAA ahead of time for this arrangement.
It is important to note that all students must sit their scheduled external assessments. If a student does not sit an external assessment, they will not receive a final result for the subject and will impact their QCE credit.

Year 11 Exam Block 13-15 May
Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from Monday 13 – Wednesday 15 May. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students participating in this exam block will undergo Unit 1 assessment. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

ANZAC Assembly
Last Wednesday a College Assembly was held to commemorate all those that have served in the armed forces in the lead up to ANZAC Day. The enduring legacy of mateship, self-sacrificing courage and perseverance was highlighted in an interview with past-parent and naval veteran, Mr Max Francis. During the prayer, cadets placed the traditional poppies, along with desert peas, on the stage as a symbolic gesture of remembrance for those who lost their lives in battle, including our first nations people. A wreath was also laid to the beautiful hymn, How Great Thou Art, performed by our talented orchestra. The Last Post and Reveille were played by Year 12 student Angus W and the Treble Makers led us in the anthems of New Zealand and Australia. The ceremony enabled us to gather as a college community, in gratitude for generations of members of the army, navy and air force who have served so that we can enjoy the peace and freedom that characterises our Australian way of life.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.
Wednesday 1 May Ms Bryson's 12 RAE A & D
Wednesday 8 May Mrs Harmen's 11 RAE B & D
Wednesday 15 May Ms Glasspool's 10 RE A & H
Also, if you would like to join in other Parish services, the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg advertises Mass times at https://www.bundabergcatholic.net.au/mass-prayer/

Rowing – First Sprint Regatta
On Sunday 21 April, our 48 rowers participated in their first Regatta for the 2024 local season. We were excited for this regatta as it was the first time we have ever done a sprint regatta. All rowers only had to race 500m. The goal of having the shorter races for the first regatta was to help support new rowers. Despite a wet start, the weather didn’t disappoint and turned into a nice day with a tail wind that helped rowers down the course.
Our rowers did oarsome with all rowers finishing with a 1st , 2nd , or 3rd but as this is a lead up regatta, places weren’t awarded. Overall, we had 21 crews & rowers cross in 1st place, 19 in 2nd place & 10 in 3rd place.
The exciting part of the day was seeing our 23 new rowers crossing the finish line in in their first ever regatta. All rowers put in a great effort and gained valuable race experience for the next Regatta to be held on 19 May.
A big THANK-YOU to all the parents and coaches that helped out on the day. We had parents on the water in safety boats, helping in the canteen, handing our bow numbers, in the judge’s tower, boat loading, towing trailers. The day would not have been a success without your assistance. Thank you to our sponsors as well that financial support our team uniform.
Keep being oarsome

Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships
Kobi H had a long but successful campaign at the 2024 Australian SLS Championships, which were held on the Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore).
Kobi was due to compete in 11 events, which included a combination of individual and teams/relay races - unfortunately two of these events were not conducted due to conditions and timetabling issues (U17 Male Surf Belt Race and U19 Male Rescue Tube Rescue Race).
Kobi raced in the U17 Male individual events, which had 250+ competitors in the age division, meaning there were Heats (R1), Heats (R2), Quarter Finals, and Semi Finals held before even making a final. He also competed in U17 and U19 Male Team events, and one Open Team event.
From his 9 events that he raced in, he managed to go 'around the cans' an incredible 29 times over the course of competition, and qualified through to 5 Australian Championships' FINALS, with his results being:
Open Lifesaver Relay - GOLD Medal (1st)
U17 Male Surf Race - 6th
U19 Male Board Rescue - 8th
U17 Male Surf Teams - 8th
U17 Male Board Relay - 10th
U17 Ironman - Semi Final
U17 Male Board Race - Semi Final
U17 Male Taplin Relay - Semi Final
Congratulations Koby.
Kobi has also been announced that he will be a reserve for the Australian Youth Lifesaving Team to compete at the 2024 World Lifesaving Championships later this year. Well done and all the best.
