I’m not sure why it is that I relate to the following cartoon so closely…
Other than that ‘household six year olds’ can be replaced by ‘itinerant adolescents’!!
That said, fatherhood is a wonderful gift and the role that fathers and father figures play in the life of children is profound. Sadly, we regularly see too many poor examples of masculinity in our society but, like most things, those are far outweighed by men doing their absolute but sometimes imperfect best, to be the best men and the best fathers that they can be. Every dad wants to be a better dad for their child than their dad was to them. And for many, that it is a high bar. One of the best pieces of news I heard last week was that there may be a new series of ‘Ted Lasso’ in the works. I can’t wait. I love the wisdom and wit of that show. One of the better episodes that reflected on the place and impact of dads was in Series 2, Episode 8 when the very loveable Higgins commented, “Well, I try to love for father for who he is and forgive him for who he isn’t”. I can only hope and pray that my children will always be able to say the same of me. Happy Fathers’ Day to all of our Dads, Grandads and Father figures.
School Fees 2025 – you will receive from me today a letter outlining the fee structure that has been developed by the Diocese for Shalom for next year. Across the 38 schools of the Rockhampton Diocese, there has been a huge amount of work done to bring each of our schools into line with the funding regime set by the Federal Government. 80% of our funding comes from Canberra and the Government is attempting to make funding to independent and Catholic schools more equitable and transparent. This will mean a lot of change and some increases are inevitable. Shalom needs parents to pay fees to keep this College going each week. We will always do what we are able to support families in financial hardship. I so appreciate all of those families who meet their fee commitment and get fees in on time and finalized each year.
Dance Night was fantastic on both Friday and Saturday nights. Congratulations to all of our participants and the staff who gave them such a wonderful lead. Another sensational highlight of the year for the College.
The Right to Disconnect legislation was passed in Parliament recently. Staff at Shalom, in my experience, are usually very good at responding to parent queries by phone or email. Good communication between school and home is crucial for achieving great outcomes for our young people. I would ask parents to be mindful of teachers’ time out of school hours and on weekends. They will do their best to get back to you in a timely manner.
Subject Selection Forms for 2025
Could any Year 8 or Year 9 students who still have not returned their signed paper copy of their subject selections for 2025 please do so. We are now in the process cross checking these with the electronic submissions.
The online portal for subject selections has now closed. If your child has not selected their subjects for 2025 online, please have them see Mrs Norris or Mr Maher at Student Reception.
Year 12 Mock and External Assessments
Mr Maher met with all Year 12’s last Wednesday to go over the school’s expectations during the mock and external exam blocks. All information required for both the Mock and External Assessment is available in SIA: https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/homepage/6641
We strongly recommend that all students engage with these documents before they commence their examinations.
Year 12 Results
On Wednesday I asked all Year 12 students to check their myQCE account to ensure that they received their senior results. They need to have a private email address registered to their account and to make sure they can successfully log into this account.
QCAA will release Year 12 results at 9.00am on Wednesday 11 December. Students access their results, Senior Statement, and their Queensland Certificate of Education (if eligible) in their myQCE Student Portal account.
QTAC registration – ATAR score and QTAC Application Portal
Year 12 students have received an information sheet on how to:
- Register with QTAC to receive their ATAR score
- Create their QTAC Applications account
If you child is eligible to receive an ATAR score, could you please encourage them to register. We have asked students to give consent for the College to see their score so that we may collate this data for our own analysis purposes.
QTAC will release ATAR Scores from 9.00am on Friday 13 December.
If you child is planning to apply for university through QTAC they will need to firstly create an account with QTAC.
The below attached ‘how to’ sheet has explanatory steps to complete both the registration for their ATAR score and how to create their QTAC application account.

Year 11 Exam Block (4-9 September) and Year 12 Mock Exam Block (2-13 September)
Attached is the Year 11 Exam Block Timetable (4-9 September) and the Year 12 Mock Exam Block Timetable (2-13 September). Students need only attend school for the exams they are to sit during this time, however, students who are behind in their schoolwork may be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform, phones and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 9 students.
Wednesday 4 September Ms Jenny O'Driscoll's RE 9E + 9F
Wednesday 11 September Mass Cancelled
Also, if you would like to join in other Parish services, the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg advertises Mass times at https://www.bundabergcatholic.net.au/mass-prayer/

The Hogan House nomination for quiet achiever this week goes to several students who spent a considerable amount of time and energy creating the winning Shalom Day Dance that was performed at Shalom Day on Thursday 20 August. The group worked together tirelessly and created a completely original routine as well as mixing the music together that resulted in Hogan Houses first win at Shalom Day since 2018!!!! Hannah R, Lucy H, Riveyra G, Lawson B, Sam C, Summer C, Michaela R, Jenna K, Hayley B, Iliana H, Adeline S and Charlie A worked together in their own time and also worked brilliantly with the rest of the Hogan House students teaching them all the routine for the winning house dance on the day. Even though there were multiple year levels involved they came together and showed their true Hogan House spirit. Well done to all.

Middle School Academic Showcase
In week 10 this term, we are excited to once again celebrate the academic achievements of our middle school students. We invite all parents, guardians and students in Year 7, 8 and 9 to the 2024 Middle School Academic Showcase on Thursday 12 September at the Waterford building. Join us anytime between 3:30pm and 5:00pm to enjoy a cuppa and biscuit, and browse the various displays.
On display will be a range of student work from across the curriculum areas, including dance and poetry performances. A schedule of the live events will come out soon.
We would like to extend the invitation to grandparents as well. This year there are lucky door prizes to be won. Students have the chance to win one of five $10 tuck-shop vouchers. Parents and grandparents go into the draw to win a grocery voucher.
Hope to see you there!
The Brain Bee Challenge was a brilliant show of concentration and memory... we toured multiple experiments which most notably included rats with brain windows, zebrafish which could regenerate any part of their body and even human brain samples with neurodegenerative diseases... The team challenge commenced based on the previous experiments... Through perseverance, team four was able to place third, by a small margin of two points, behind first... Overall, the event is highly recommended for those with an interest in neuroscience, and are not afraid to drink a touch too much coffee.

Students have been visiting Gracehaven Retirement Village every Thursday afternoon for SCASA and making fabulous new friends. Dawn has travelled all over the world and has amazing stories to share, Bill used to be the Mayor of Gooburrum, and in just a couple of weeks Allen is going to be 102!!!
Next term we will be making Halloween decorations for our Halloween afternoon tea party and then working on Christmas decorations for the end of year Christmas party.
Last week, we shared stories in a group and almost started World War III with the residents having a humorous and excited debate about how many favourite colours you can have!
Students are loving their new friendships and are keen to make projects and have parties with their new friends next term! If you are interested in joining us, look out for SCASA information from Mr. Robinson early in Term 4.

From the Library…
This week the joint Literary Committee features the winner of our next category in the anthology Shalom College’s own “Literary Wonders” for 2024; 9-10 Poetry. The following is the beautiful work of Asha D. which invokes images of gossamer fairy wings and soft fragrant breezes. Enjoy …
Magic
By Asha D. (Winner Yr. 9-10 Poetry)
Magic In a realm where whispers weave through the willow's sigh,
Where the moonlit velvet drapes the shy, sombre sky,
There lies the gentle breath of the arcane,
A world where magic refuses to wane.
Beneath the cloak of the night’s embracing fold,
The stars are ancient scribes, their stories told
In the flicker of an ember’s playful dance,
Where spirits swirl in a luminous trance.
With a wand’s gentle flick, the unseen stirs,
Awakening the slumber of the pine and firs.
The air, heavy with the scent of mystic blooms,
Carries the secrets of forgotten tombs.
Fairies flit through the thicket, a silent ballet,
Their wings dusted with the magic of the Milky Way.
Each beat, a whisper of the world's hidden lore,
Revealing wonders not be held before.
In the heart of the forest where the shadows play,
The mystic beast roams with its mane of grey.
Eyes aglow with the light of a thousand dreams,
Guardian of the mysteries and the in-between.
An incantation here, a potion mixed there,
The alchemist's concoctions floating in the air.
Bubbles pop with promises of power and plight,
Crafting charms under the shroud of night.
Magic, oh magic, in every breath and stone,
In the silent language only the wind has known.
A symphony of the cosmos, finely spun,
Under the watchful eyes of the sun.
So fear not the power that thrums through the veins
Of this world where enchantment forever reigns.
For here, in the whispers of the willow's sigh,
Magic lives, breathes, and will never die.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to ser
ve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given. This concludes the weekend of September 14 & 15.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love
respectfully, with all people”.
