Recently I had a dad in my office following a problem with his daughter’s use of a mobile phone. His daughter had been found indulging in a world of social media at school and the phone was confiscated by a teacher. Initially, dad was a little defensive and said, in his daughter's defense, that ‘all the kids do that’. I tried that excuse once on a police officer when caught not fully stopping a Stop sign. It didn’t do me much good. This dad went on to bemoan all mobile phones and said that he and other parents feel helpless on this issue. Whilst sympathizing a little, this is just not the case. There is a solution, or at least a brake, on your child’s use of Social Media if you are brave enough to use it. As you know, your child’s laptop at Shalom is monitored by a product for which the school pays – Family Zone.
From the Family Connect App on your own phone, for all activities on the device, outside of school hours, you can determine how long the internet is used and the areas which can be explored or blocked. It is fantastic. The same can be done with your child’s phone. I would get down on my knees and beg parents to do this. It will ensure that there are reasonable controls over the digital footprint your child develops with their phone. At the very, very least, it would stop access to Social Media during school hours. There is absolutely no need for your child to access SnapChat or Instagram or anything else during school hours. This control does not limit a phone’s function as a phone. Texts and calls are not interrupted. No problem using Paywave. Linking your child’s phone to Family Zone will just stop, dead, them being distracted at school by constant notifications – and getting their phones confiscated. I fear that many parents will not do this because it won’t make your child happy. I truly understand that and have already had a similar conversation in my household. It is, however, worthwhile. Below is a link that shows you how to do this pretty easily. It would make our job here so much easier if everyone got on board with this.

The Shalom IT staff are very willing to assist anyone who has difficulty with this.
Staffing 2023 – I’m very pleased to announce that Mr Aaron Brown has been appointed to the position of Assistant Principal Student Formation from next year. This is a role that has been very capably performed by Mrs Austin-Campbell. Next year, Mrs Austin-Campbell will take on the staff portfolio from Ms O’Shea-Hard. Subsequently, we will be looking to appoint a new House Coordinator for Chisholm as well as one for McCormack as Ms Karli Lancaster is moving to Brisbane next year. We will also farewell at the end of the year Mr Pat Matters who is off to the Sunshine Coast and Mr Neil Feather who is on the move to Brisbane. All three of those teachers will be missed but we are pleased that they are going to Catholic schools to further their careers.
Academic Awards are in full swing this week culminating in the Year 12 Graduation on Thursday. Parents have received invitations if your child is being presented with an award. Given the Government’s amber health warning, those attending these events are encouraged to wear a mask. Next year, we will go back to a full Awards evening which will be on our Calendar for Tuesday 17 October. The Year 12 Graduation will be celebrated on the Friday of that week, 20 October. This is much earlier than usual and it will occur just before External exams commence.

Giving Tree
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Giving Tree. Apart from a multitude of gifts we also collected over $3400 in cash and over $1000 in gift cards. This was an amazing effort.
All of the money and gift cards will go to Vinnies, as will most of the gifts. Some gifts will go to Woorabinda Mission in Central Queensland. There are no toy stores in Woorabinda and many families are not able to travel to bigger centres or are unable to afford gifts for their kids. The generosity of our students and staff will make Christmas a lot brighter for the children of Woorabinda and Bundaberg.
Donations for Woorabinda Mission
Sr Cecilia would like to thank everyone for their generosity last year with the footy boots they received. This year they are asking for more items such as, table cloths, sheets, any linen and especially footy boots. If you could donate any of these items please drop them into Mrs Petersen's office in Student Services by Wednesday 16 November.

Exam season is upon us, here are some helpful tips for our Language students at Shalom to consider
Helpful tips on how to reduce stress and prepare for exams
Be prepared
- Read/write everything three times as this also helps to commit the info to memory.
- Use your Trial Exam results to focus on what you need to study.
- Use previous exam papers to get a feel for what to expect.
- Ask friends what they are doing that is helping with their studies or friends who did it last year.
- You need to study within 24 hours of the exam on that subject to retain more info.
- Write things in coloured texta that you have trouble remembering (such as names and dates)
Day of the exam
Do your usual routine, for example, have what you normally eat for breakfast. Take some water and a healthy snack (if allowed) to the exam.
And finally,
If the stress is getting to you it will prevent you from studying effectively and confidently - so ask for help from Headspace, a counsellor, a professional, or your helpful teacher. More tips to reduce stress and prepare for exams can be found here.

The concept of lost worlds began as an exploration of mythology and the mystery of incomplete maps. The blank spaces holding much allure for the adventurous and requiring conjecture and imagination to fill. Exploration of Earth is an obvious pre-cursor and early mythological lands, some of which are still the stuff of legend today, are also influential. Maps have surfaced from as early as the 1500’s that define ‘Hollow Earth’, Hyperborea, and Tartaria all of which have been interwoven into the fabric of our deep history and conjecture of the origins of our species. The classical romance of Arthurian legend inspired much of this, and the adventurous spirit of the time played a huge role as well. Adventure stories clearly played a massive part in this sub-genre, The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas in 1844 an obvious influence.
From this came the classic group of iconic lost world works. We went to Wonderland in 1865 with Lewis Carroll and Alice, Jules Verne took us to the bottom of the ocean and to the center of the earth in the late 1860’s and early 1870’s, H.G. Wells took us into the terrain of the future in 1895, and L Frank Baum invited us to Oz in 1900.
In 1937 JRR Tolkein introduced us to Middle Earth in his story The Hobbit, this high adventure is said to have eventuated as a direct result of Tolkein’s experiences in World War One. The world Tolkein encountered fresh from university was politically troubled and he was expected to enlist. His entree to military service was at the Somme during a most brutal battle so the tribalistic brutality of war in the broken, hostile landscape became a feature in his epic series.
C.S. Lewis constructed Narnia for us when he wrote The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950. Though not as dark or quite as ‘dangerous’ as Tolkein’s tale, the Narnia books were still full of adventure and daring battles. The added element in these of course is their use as a vehicle for Lewis’ religious instruction.
The ‘space-age’ of the mid-twentieth century introduced space travel and yet another unchartered expanse to be explored in another sub-genre and closer to science-fiction. The fantasy sub-genre in the adventure story context has been somewhat abandoned completely for the fantasy realm today, primarily because our awareness of the world has removed a lot of the mystique from the jungles, wildernesses, oceans, and caves. Therefore ‘lost worlds’ are a little thin on the ground, the fantasy genre provides a vehicle for the continuance of the lost world concept. However, a new generation of imaginative writers will find new and creative ways to provide us with those incomplete maps and the ambition to explore them.

Queensland Schools Table Tennis Championships – Bundaberg Round
On Saturday 5 November, two teams from Shalom competed in the Bundaberg round of the Queensland Schools Table Tennis Championships.
Sisters Hannah (Year 9) and Christina (Year 7 – Christina played up an age group) formed our Girls Junior Division team. Playing in a round robin against female and male teams, they were undoubtedly the stronger of the two girls teams competing as they won many matches and challenged the boys teams. Although still strong, they unfortunately did not play their best against the opposing girls team from St Lukes, going down by the narrowest of margins three matches (8 games) to two (7 games). All matches went to three games, with many going beyond 11 points – a very close contest. This meant that the girls took silver on the day, but still qualified to be able to compete in the State Championships.
Our Boys Junior team consisted of Will (Year 9) and Lincoln (Year 7 – Lincoln also played up an age group). Lincoln demonstrated his strength as a player by losing only two games for the entire tournament! The boys did not lose to any opposition in the round games, and progressed as top of their group to the finals. In the semi-final, they overcame a spirited Bundaberg State High School three matches to one, which set them up to play Bundaberg Christian College in the final. Lincoln played first, claiming victory in two games. Will followed and played exceptionally well in two very close, nail-biting matches. Both matches went to three games, with Will often behind and having to fight back, showing a fantastic level of maturity and patience. Amazingly, the boys claimed overall victory in just three matches.
Both teams now qualify to compete at the State Championships in Brisbane on Friday 2 December. Congratulations to all four players for their high level of ability, exceptional behaviour, and fantastic sportsmanship. Well done, Hannah, Christina, Lincoln and Will!!
