Principal’s Reflection
“All I want for Christmas is….” We read in the news about the awful supply chain issues around the world at the moment. Apparently, it is an existential threat that we might not be able to purchase all the goods we want this year. This seems to be not so much a problem with lack of goods but rather we have been shopping madly instead of travelling! I hope that Christmas 2021 will be a chance for all of us to appreciate what we have rather than what we might not be able to have delivered. We live in a wonderful country, most of us will be surrounded by those we love and we are well provided for. If we do nothing more than say ‘thanks’, it will be a great Christmas.
Student Movements.. if your child won’t be back at Shalom next year, it will undoubtedly be our loss. But, if that is the case, please, please, please, let us know as soon as you are able.
Week 1, 2022 will commence on Monday January 24 for our new students. Year 7s & 12s come in for the day for orientation for the Year 7s. All of our new students from Year 8-11 will come in for half a day. Everyone to start on Tuesday January 25.
Thank you – really sincerely, to all of our families who have supported Shalom so positively in 2021. It has been another very busy and exciting year. It has had its share of ups and downs but a lot more ups than the opposite. Shalom, as a community, is marked by its positive culture that has been on display so often. That doesn’t happen by accident and it is a result of so many good people making an effort. Thank you.
Last Newsletter for 2021. Every possible best wish to all as we approach Christmas. I hope that gratitude might be our gift to each other and the world. May the joy, the hope and the promise of the birth of the Christ Child light up our lives. Shalom Chaverim.

Mission
"What is Advent?"
Advent is the season of the year leading up to Christmas. Advent comes from the Latin word meaning "coming." Jesus is coming, and Advent is intended to be a season of preparation for His arrival. While we typically regard Advent as a joyous season, it is also intended to be a period of preparation, much like Lent. Prayer, penance and fasting are appropriate during this season.
The Advent season lasts for four Sundays. This year it began on Sunday and will end on Christmas Eve and thus is not considered part of the Christmas season. The Advent celebration is both a commemoration of Christ’s first coming and an anticipation of His second coming.
Often we forget about Advent in the crazy lead up to Christmas. Our kids might have Advent calendars and get excited about opening the little doors to find a treat hidden away. Why not make your own Advent calendar. Each day stop for a moment to jot down one thing you are grateful for. By the time Christmas arrives you will have 24 reasons to celebrate.
Wishing everyone a Happy and Safe Christmas!
Diocesan Ignite Summer Camp
Summer Camp is four massive days of fun, friends and getting closer to Jesus. This camp is run by Ignite Youth from Brisbane and is open to all students who will be high school age (year 7 to 12) in 2022.

Changes To Fitness Centre Student Usage For 2022
Recent changes to Workplace Health and Safety regulations governing the use of school-based Fitness Centres requires us to implement a number of changes for students using the Fitness Centre for general training before and/or after school.
Please be advised of the following important changes and requirements for 2022:
All students wishing to use the Fitness Centre before and/or after school MUST complete a new Fitness Centre Induction. A re-induction will be required for students who may have already completed one previously. Times for Induction Sessions with qualified staff will be advertised at the beginning of Term 1, 2022. Students MUST complete a new induction prior to being permitted to use the Fitness Centre before and/or after school.
Staff rostered on to supervise the Fitness Centre during before and after school (Ms Lauren Ree and Mr Jarrod Burnett) are required to provide adequate supervision to all students utilising the centre. In order to provide this supervision, no more than 20 students will be permitted to use the Fitness Centre for training before and/or after school, unless they are being supervised by another sporting team coach.
To enable adequate supervision before and/or after school, NO Power Lifting or CrossFit-type activities (any type of training that involves less than 6 repetitions) are to be conducted unless under direct supervision by a qualified coach that is also present. The Fitness Centre Supervisor is unable to supervise these activities while actively supervising other users of the gym.
Students using the Fitness Centre before and/or after school must also adhere to the following requirements:
Sign in via the Google Doc found on the Fitness Centre
iPad (which will be cross referenced with the induction list)
Use a towel on all benches and machines
Demonstrate appropriate behaviour and conduct at all times
Follow all instructions and requests from the Fitness Centre Supervisor

Pathways
2021 Pathways Wrap Up
The Pathways Department has had another extremely successful year with continued growth in student participation, seeing over 130 students engaged in additional learning opportunities through Tafe Certificates, CQU Certificates and the CQU SUN program. We are always so appreciative of the support offered by our external learning providers to guide and navigate our students through their courses.
Once again, we are very grateful to the numerous local businesses who have hosted and supported our students and shared their industry skills and knowledge. This engagement is vital in providing students with real-life experience and an understanding of what is expected in the workplace. We were thrilled to have almost 100 students complete over 4000 hours of work experience throughout the year.
We have received positive feedback from employers of our school-based apprentices and trainees and we congratulate the 2021 students who took up these opportunities. It is quite exciting to see more school-based apprenticeships and traineeships on offer to our students. We are very proud to announce our winners for the year – Most Outstanding Vocational Education Student, Jorja Robinson, School Based Apprentice of the Year, Wil Simmons and School Based Trainee of the Year, Paddy O’Donnell.
Most Outstanding Vocational Education Student Jorja Robinson
School Based Apprentice of the Year Wil Simmons
School Based Trainee of the Year Paddy O’Donnell
It is always so special to share in our students journey as they explore and navigate their future pathway into the world of employment. We look forward continued growth and success in supporting our students in 2022.

Quiet Achiever
Benjamin Wilson
This week McAuley House would like to celebrate Benjamin Wilson as our quiet achiever. Benjamin is a friendly, kind, polite, conscientious, and positive young man who always puts 100% of himself into all he does. Whether it be academic, sport or a cultural activity, Benjamin will give everything a go and he certainly makes sure that he SHINES.
Benjamin never draws attention to himself but is always very aware of others who may need assistance, a smile or a kind word. He quietly, amongst peers and staff, shows his understanding of MERCY as he involves himself so willingly in all areas of his college and McAuley House life.

A fitting discovery for a ‘feature book’ is “Do Something for Nothing”. Based on the grassroots movement founded by jet-set, globe-trotting hairdresser Joshua Coombes, and the Netflix film hosted by Morgan Freeman, this book documents Coombes’ mission to connect with the homeless on a human level and offer them the dignity of getting their hair cut.
While working at a London hair salon in 2015, Coombes ventured out to the streets with his scissors to engage with people living on the fringes of society. His #DoSomethingForNothing campaign was borne from his Instagram posts of ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots.
This book is an exploration of love, tolerance, persistence, and shame, it challenges the stigma surrounding homelessness. It affords us an uplifting account of an inspirational man’s vision and takes us on a journey through the city streets in different cities across the world.
‘Coombes believes that small acts of love can make a big impact.’ – Morgan Freeman
Published in 2017 it’s an older book now but every bit as relevant now in our society and a beautiful example of the importance of dignity for all regardless of our socio-economic condition.

Year 11 Film
On Friday 19 November, the Year 11 film class had a Zoom interview with Daniel Schultz, a producer and financial manager of the Australian film studio “Ludo”. Ludo is based in Brisbane and has produced shows such as Robbie Hood, Content, and the well-known children’s TV show, Bluey. We discussed how modern media has moved away from free to air television and more towards social media or streaming services. While streaming services are taking over, traditional television is still key to engaging the masses.
This led the studio to experiment forms of distribution, releasing the show Content on YouTube. The show itself is designed to be watched on a mobile phone in portrait, with the viewer following lead character Lucy as she accidentally becomes a viral sensation.
Daniel also shared how the Covid lockdown placed limitations on live action films, with social distancing laws a requirement, yet animated shows such as Bluey had minimal disruption due to the flexibility of working with animation. The Year 11 Film, Television and New Media class were grateful for Daniel’s time as he not only answered our question in regards to IA1 and 2, but gave great insight into the various roles available for those interested in pursuing a career in the film industry.

From the beginning of December, many Japanese people start writing, or creating, their Nengajou, or “New Year’s cards”. If posted by the end of December, these cards will be delivered on 1 January, so most families wait excitedly to see how many they might receive.
New Year’s Eve in Japan is called Oomisoka. By the end of December, Japanese families try to finish cleaning their houses and have all their preparations for the New Year completed. Many people who have moved away for work return to their hometowns to spend the New Year with their families.
As midnight approaches, priests in Buddhist temples all around Japan ring the temple bells 108 times to symbolise the 108 worldly desires man must overcome in order to attain enlightenment.
Oshogatsu (the first three days of New Year) is the biggest holiday in Japan. People often dress in traditional clothes and, regardless of whether or not they are religious, flock to shrines and temples to pray for health and happiness.
To end our Year of Learning in Japanese at Shalom we were so very luck to experience some cultural awareness during excursions. Year 10 students enjoy a trip to Hinkler to feast on some Japanese noodles and donburi. The Year 9 students had a nice trip to the Japanese gardens at the botanical gardens to enjoy some sushi and enjoy the scenery.
To the class of 2021 Graduating Japanese students I congratulate you on your achievements. You have worked very hard through out the last six years and teaching you was an absolute pleasure.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish our Shalom College family all the very best for a safe and holy Christmas and New Year. Please accept our very good wishes for your health and happiness for 2022. Next year is the Year of the Tiger, which promises to bring many good things.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

APOCALYPSE-
"IS THE END OF THE WORLD COMING?"
by: Joe McCorley
As we came to the end of the Church year, the Sunday Gospels disturbed me:
“In those days, after the time of distress, the sun will be darkened, the moon will lose its brightness, the stars will come falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.”
Wow! Is this what is coming for us following Covid-19 and all the disasters of climate change our world is facing?
“I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away all these things will have taken place.”
Imagine the impact on the disciples who lived in the first generation, when Jesus predicted that the whole of the cosmos was coming crashing down!
Thank God, all this destruction didn’t happen in the first generation.
So what is Jesus warning us about? What did happen in the first generation to turn our world upside down?
Certainly, the magnificent TEMPLE, the centre of Jewish life, and the spectacular place of worship was destroyed by the Roman army.
But “APOCALYPSE” means “taking away the veil”! What tremendous apocalyptic message was revealed to the first generation of Christians?
With the help of Bishop Robert Barron, I found the answer. In the first generation, “JESUS CHRIST ROSE FROM THE DEAD!”
One of the basic principles of life was that DEATH was FINAL!
But for Jesus, death did not have the final word. All systems and beliefs of the first generation were shattered. God’s love for Jesus (and us) was more powerful than any system in the first generation, and in our generation.
The people of the first generation used the sun, moon, and stars to navigate their world. Today, we use mobile phones and satellites to navigate. We also look to our economic and political systems to govern our daily lives, but these too will pass away. So, to whom do we turn?
Bishop Baron advocates that we need to follow a Spiritual GPS to wake us up! We need to give our lives over to the higher power of the Holy Spirit.
Our new parish vision also recommends that “we go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to welcome and share God’s love with all people.”
In times of disasters, turning our eyes to Jesus, gives us a new perspective on life. It reminds us that GOD is far bigger than all our challenges and fears. Jesus himself reminds us to “Come! Live life in all its fullness!”

If your parish group would like to be showcased in the bulletin, please send in your photos with a short note, and we will attempt to include it in the coming edition.
