Principal’s Reflection
I don’t often find myself intimidated by 80 year old Catholic Nuns but I found myself in that position this week. I was able to attend a talk given by Sr Joan Chittister who is a Benedictine sister from the United States. She was very challenging! She spoke about how our call as Christians is not to be ‘nice’ but to be prophetic – to stand against the status quo if it is not in line with the Gospel. She had plenty to say to those of us who are a part of the Catholic Church but her words reflected a lot for any Australian facing a changing world. So many of our ‘traditional’ beliefs about climate, wealth, immigration and so many other issues are being questioned and some battle lines drawn. Before, and now after the recent election, we are hearing more about the role of women in our society. Not surprisingly, women no longer accept a second class status or being seen as merely supporters of men. They want a place at the table. Sr Joan had some really strong things to say about that to organized religion – whether that is the Catholic Church or Islam or Judaism or most others, that have spent hundreds of years sidelining the voice of women and justifying that with ‘tradition’. Secular societies have bought into that as well. The following quote from Sr Joan has a lot for us as Catholics to think about but it also applies to a much wider audience in Australian society:
“Women are intent on bringing their own piece of the wisdom not only to the development of the human race but to the reinterpretation of a faith that once taught racism, anti-Semitism and slavery with as much confidence as it does sexism in our day. The question, of course, is: How can a church that applies one set of principles to the public arena fail to apply the same set of principles to itself? How can the church call the rest of the world to justice, human rights, political participation and equality for all, while at the same time closing its synods to women, denying its seminaries to women and reserving its sacristies for men alone – muzzling, in other words, one-half of its own population in the name of God? How can “tradition” possibly be an answer in a church where tradition in every other category is simply the interpretation of the time? This pope, for instance, had no trouble in asserting the equality of women in ‘Mulieris Dignitatem’ despite the church’s unbroken theological tradition that had labeled them naturally inferior for centuries.”
I hope that many others, inside and outside the Church, feel as intimidated and challenged by Sr Joan as much as I did!
Showcase 2022 was a tremendous success in spite of the challenges it faced in production. We are blessed to have so many talented staff and students who are always ready to unleash their potential. Congratulations to all involved.
Builders will be back on site at Shalom from this week. We had wanted to do an extension of the Sports Centre plus some refurbishments and build a new toilet / changeroom facility at the end of the hanger. Increases in prices in the building industry have been challenging and the College Board decided to reduce the project. We will refurbish the change rooms in the Sports Centre and convert the mezzanine area to include three classrooms. We will go ahead with the new change rooms and toilets at the Hangar. This will be a $4m project. A walkthrough video of the revised project can be viewed –
Covid still exists and is in our community. We also have quite a number of students last week with the flu. We have learned from Covid that we should not ‘soldier on’ when unwell. SIA keeps kids up to date from home if they are well enough. I guess we should not be surprised the in the days following the Show holiday and the Year 12 Formal that they were all great opportunities for bugs to be shared. If your child returns a positive RAT, QLD Health would really like you to register that on their website and complete the survey. This will greatly assist with contact tracing. The following advice is provided by QLD Health as a reminder to those who may have recently been affected by a Covid infection:
For the next 7 days after ending isolation
You can go to work or school or return to your normal activities.
You don’t need a negative test result to go back to work or study. There is no need to show a negative test to your employer or educational institution.
This is because most people who get COVID-19 will continue to test positive for some time after they have recovered, even though they no longer have COVID-19 and are no longer infectious.
If you leave your house:
- wear a face mask, including whenever you are indoors, or when you’re outdoors but can’t socially distance
- wash your hands regularly.
A child under 12 years old is not required to wear a face mask for 7 days after ending their isolation, however a school may require a student to wear one as part of their policies for health and safety reasons.

Pivot – Student Survey
In the coming weeks all students will receive a survey from each of their class teachers. This year we are trialing a new platform ‘Pivot’ to collate this information. The surveys will be completed in class to gather feedback on their learning experience. We hope that students will engage with this process in a meaningful and reflective manner. This will ensure relevant data can be collected for teachers to reflect on their pedagogical approaches.
2022 External Assessment dates
The external assessments for General and General (Extension) subjects will be held from Monday 24 October to Tuesday 15 November 2022.
The 2022 external assessment timetable should be available before then end of Term 2. I will send a copy of this to all students via email when available. It will also be posted on SIA.
Please remember scheduled external exams cannot be missed. There is no opportunity for students to re-sit any of these exams if they are missed.
Alternate Venue - External Examinations
It is expected that all Year 12 students will sit their scheduled external examinations at Shalom College. If there is any exceptional circumstance as to why your child cannot complete their exams at the College, please contact Mrs Norris immediately to discuss this. It is a requirement of QCAA that an alternate venue be identified so that extra-ordinary arrangements can be made ahead of time.

From the Library
I had the good fortune to be able to attend a lecture on Thursday evening, the 2022 Annual Book Links Narelle Oliver Lecture was delivered by the very learned Dr Robyn Sheahan-Bright.
Dr Sheahan-Bright is the current president of IBBY Australia (The International Board on Books for Young People) and has a long, and distinguished career in libraries and children’s literature. Beginning at A for Activism and traversing all the way to Z for Zeitgeist, Dr Sheahan-Bright delivered sterling literary examples of resources that encourage awareness, empathy, involvement, and curiosity at a time when the individual is most receptive to such information and has the requisite neuroplasticity for the formation of an empathetic mindset. Another pertinent observation is that the picture book and the graphic novel particularly are brilliant formats for the dynamism of these topics, the visual opportunities are apparent in bolstering the message beyond didacticism to a passionate graffiti.
“It is those who have compassion for all life who will best safeguard the life of man. Those who become aroused only when man is endangered become aroused too late.” – Edwin Way Teale.
There are some beautiful and striking books that have been suggested by Dr Sheahan-Bright, some of which will be included in the Shalom library. First to be added will be Zenobia by Morten Durr and Lars Horneman which is a graphic novel that with very few words depicts the devastation and despair of the Syrian refugee crisis. The other is the beautifully presented Future Girl written and illustrated by Deaf writer, artist and activist, Asphyxia. Future Girl tells the story of a Deaf teenager against the backdrop of a near-future Melbourne on the brink of environmental catastrophe.

Congratulations to Kate McFarlane who was awarded the Queensland School Sport Golf Champion and was selected by Golf Australia for the Singapore Junior Championships.
From the 22-25 May, Kate played in the QSS State Golf Championships in Townsville. The tournament was played over 72 holes - 3 rounds at Townsville GC and 1 round at Rowes Bay GC. Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
