1. Be on time
2. Be in uniform
3. Use your manners
Ali also mentioned that at the end of each training session, since that time, she shakes the hand of her coaches and thanks them for their efforts. So maybe she could add –
4. Be grateful
Ali said that she had often heard about virtues like, Resilience and Integrity and Character but that she didn’t really understand those words. Graham Murray’s three rules summarised those and made sense to her. Since implementing those in all areas of her life, she has captained her team, her country and made her a better wife, mother and worker. I hope every Shalom student can remember and implement those three steps.
Bundaberg Regional Council will be doing some filming in the next few weeks in Eggmolesse Street to have a look at traffic patterns. As this area is getting considerably busier, I have asked Council to look at the possibility of creating a Zebra crossing.

Learner Conferences (ie Parent-Teacher Interviews) – Tuesday 23May 3.30pm-6.30pm
Learner Conferences for all Year 7-12 subjects (other than Year 7/8 Core Studies) will be conducted in the Sports Centre from 3:30pm to 6.30pm on Tuesday 23 May 2023. Interviews will be of ten minutes duration.
Learner Conferences will open for parent bookings through Sia - Parent Lounge - PT Interviews at 8:00am on Wednesday 10 May and close at 3:00pm on Thursday 18 May.
Please note that the following teachers will be unavailable on the date of the conferences: Trevor Barrett, Deb Bolam, Tony Hogan, Steve McKay, Craig Corpe, Shelley Allen, Jo Thomson and Kev Crowley. Please contact these teachers individually if you would like to arrange an appointment with them.
Our teachers work hard to provide detailed feedback through Sia. This information is valuable, and parents are encouraged to take the time to review their child’s assessment through Sia - My Students - Grades as shown below prior to the interviews. If you are having trouble logging into Sia, please contact Shalom IT.
Students are encouraged to attend interviews along with their parents. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Year 11 Term 2 Exam Block Timetable
Attached is the Year 11 Exam Block occurring in week 5 from Monday 15 May – Wednesday 17 May. Students need only attend school for the exams they are to sit during this time. Expectations for students throughout the exam block are also attached.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

Edmund Rice Camp
Preparations are already underway for our annual Edmund Rice Camp. This camp takes place from Monday 25 to Thursday 28 September at Chaverim. The camp is a great opportunity for Shalom students to give back to our local community and really make a difference. For this camp to happen, we need senior students to act as Big Buddies. Michael Bundesen spoke to students during Assembly last week, encouraging Year 11 and 12 students to come to an information session during Afternoon Tea this Thursday. Students can also find out more information on SIA and by the link to the website https://www.ercampsqld.org/
Easter Vigil Baptisms
In the Catholic Church the Easter Vigil is the preferred time of year where we welcome and initiate new members into our Church community. We would like to congratulate Cameron W in Year 10 together with his father Glen, as well as Hanahlin W who graduated at the end of last year. They all received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass this year.
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. When your student has an upcoming class Mass, you will receive a notification or an invitation to attend. We warmly welcome all to this weekly joint Parish School celebration. The classes that will be hosting over the next few weeks are as follows:
• 10 May Mrs Harman’s 11 RAE D & F
• 17 May Ms Bryson’s 10 RE I and Mr Gahan’s 10 RE J
• 24 May Mr Sheehan's 10 RE B & E
The Nicene Creed for Young People
Do you understand that long creed said at every Sunday Mass? Do you rattle it off like a robot not really knowing what you are praying? If so, then this session is for you. If you are between the ages of 15 – 20 you are invited to come along to two sessions with the Catholic Parish where we will explore The Nicene Creed.
What does it all mean? The Nicene Creed is a way to profess our faith. It’s the summary of the most important things we believe as Catholics, as passed to the apostles from Christ.
Mrs Mary Taylor and Mrs Cheryl Petersen will be presenting these sessions.
The first session will be on Wednesday 17 May at Novakoski Hall, behind Holy Rosary Church from 5.30pm to 6.30pm followed by free pizza and finishing up at 7pm.
The second session will be the following Wednesday 24 May at the Parish Office at the same time.
RSVP: petersenc@shalomcollege.com by Tuesday 16 May.

This week's quiet achiever for Rice House is Alyvia W who has risen to the challenge of leadership in Rice House and in PC this year. She is always punctual, reliable and also helps other students in her PC class. She engages with students from all year levels to ensure that PC runs smoothly. Alyvia is frequently one of the first students to put her hand up to assist with House and College Assemblies, running of House Sports and as well as all other acivities that run throughout the year. Well done Alyvia! You are a wonderful role model to the students in Rice House.

The Japanese club recently completed a Sakura art project to celebrate the arrival of spring in Japan. The members of the club worked to create a beautiful piece of artwork that captured the essence of the Sakura, or cherry blossom, which is a cherished symbol of Japan. The artwork featured the pink petals and graceful branches that symbolise renewal and new beginnings. Students are able to take their artworks home to celebrate with their mums for Mother’s Day.
Following on with Japanese beautiful words we are looking at the word Shinrinyoku this week. Shinrinyoku also known as "forest bathing" or "forest therapy," is a practice that originated in Japan and involves immersing oneself in nature to improve one's physical and mental well-being. The term "shinrinyoku" literally means "taking in the forest atmosphere," and the practice involves slowing down, engaging the senses, and connecting with the natural world. Shinrinyoku has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and heart rate, boost the immune system, and improve overall mood. It has become increasingly popular around the world as a way to promote wellness and reconnect with the natural world. Maybe this weekend families here at Shalom can practice some Shinrinyoku somewhere in our beautiful region.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
