Friday, in our Christian tradition, we commemorate the death of Jesus and a couple of days later, we celebrate his Resurrection. It’s worth reflecting on the crucifixion of Jesus. Too often, Christianity gets ‘dumbed down’ to just having to be nice to each other. If that was all Jesus did, no one would have crucified him! Lots of his ministry was about bringing comfort to the afflicted but, he also spent plenty of time ‘afflicting the comfortable’. He did that by preaching radical inclusion and forgiveness. In this, he challenged, to its roots, the prevailing customs, traditions and practices of his time. For worse or better, this is what he continues to call us to do today.
Last Thursday, we celebrated ‘Harmony Day’ at Shalom. Led by our First Nations students and our students from Multi Cultural backgrounds, we were invited to remember and celebrate our diversity and that ‘Everyone Belongs’ here. Shalom is such a better community for the presence of our First Nations students and those from different and vibrant cultures. I fear we still live in a world where Jesus, if he were to appear again, might still run the risk of crucifixion.
Grease the Musical concluded with a stunning closing night on Saturday evening. Congratulations to all involved. It is a credit to a town like ours that we have become used to such polished performances. Very proud of the strong Shalom connection to cast and crew – six current staff, six past students, four current or past parents & six current students!
Shalom Musicians entertained us at Sunday’s Autumn Concert. So great always to see the array of talent at Shalom but particularly pleased to see the debut of our new groups with the Percussion Ensemble, the Rock Band, the Boys’ Choir. The number of our students involved in our various groups is now in excess of 250!

Project Compassion – Thank you!
Throughout Lent we have encouraged a commitment to supporting vulnerable communities through Project Compassion and now we would like to say thank you to everyone in the Shalom community for getting behind this cause. The money raised we have raised will be used by Caritas to educate and empower. Funds have been gathered from the Chisholm Pancake sale on Shrove Tuesday, the Damien House coin line, the Henna Hands in Harmony Week as well as the Crazy Hair and Socks Day. We also have cash and online donations happening.
If you would still like to support Project Compassion this Lent, it’s not too late. You can contribute online here.
Easter Sacraments
The Easter Vigil is, and has long been, THE night for initiating new members into our Catholic Church. This year we have three Shalom students, Eloise B, Freddie J and Evelyn J, who will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist at this celebration. We look forward to sharing this special celebration with them and wish them God’s richest blessings.
Easter Mass Times
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.

Parent Lounge> Student Details> Attendance> "+Add Absence Notification"
The Shalom College App has now been updated so when parents select "Absentee" it will re-direct to Parent Lounge for the absentee notification to be added.
For Parents that do not already have the College App please click below:
ALL student absentees should be notified to the office by 9am each day. If no notification has been received, an absentee text message will be sent out to parents to advise of the student's absence.
IT Department - Planned Outage for Shalom IT Services April 10 & 11
We have planned a full outage to all Shalom services on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 April 2024 for IT Maintenance. This outage will mean no access to Sia, Foldr and all college services. We highly recommend all staff, students and guardians to please not try to access any Shalom IT services on these days.
Windows 10/11 Updates
The IT unit have made available the next round of windows updates for student notebooks. We are wanting students to install them asap while at Shalom this term. All students have received an email to explain the process that needs to happen.
Notebook ADP vs Warranty vs Intentional Damage
For those who are not aware or have forgotten, our Shalom HP student notebooks are all purchased with ADP (Accidental Damage Protection). ADP allows us to repair up to three notebook parts per calendar year with a processing fee of $60.50 each time a claim is logged.
Warranty allows us to claim manufacture faults on a device. There are no fees associated to a warranty claim.
Accidental Damage Protection avoids excessive out-of-pocket repair or replacement costs caused by accidents such as some drops, spills or electrical surges. HP provides the final decision on whether a device will fall under ADP or not. HP has strongly reminded us that intentional damage does not fall under ADP and therefore will incur the full cost of repair.
Intentional damage is when a student has intentionally or recklessly destroyed or damaged the shalom notebook. HP does not cover intentional damage under ADP and therefore the families will have to pay for the cost of parts and labour. A great example is keys falling off a keyboard. Keys don’t just fall off and the common cause of this is students picking at the keys. A keyboard replacement is over $250.
We always do everything in our power to get the best outcome for Shalom families, however, please understand that whether it’s HP or another brand, the vendor will have the final decision on whether the issue is warranty or ADP. As mentioned in the ICT agreement signed at the start of each year by all guardians, it is up to the school’s discretion as to what repairs need to be performed. This is a good timely reminder to talk with your child/ren about looking after the College notebook as if they transfer to another school, we must pass this notebook onto another student that enrols at Shalom.

School Dental Van Service – Term 2
Parents of senior school students: A friendly reminder that the School Dental Forms need to be returned by this Thursday (Week 10) for the Dental Staff to process the information and to organise appointments for in Term 2.
We are inviting interested Shalom Staff/Students/Parents and Friends to participate with Shalom College at the Bargara Service and/or Bundaberg Civic Service for ANZAC Day.
We will also acknowledge students who represent Shalom College at other Services in the district. (Agnes Water, Rosedale, Moore Park Beach, Elliott Heads, Gin Gin, Childers, Woodgate Beach, etc.) (Other Services/Marches will be acknowledged if the student attends/marches in Shalom Formal uniform.)
ANZAC Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have fought and died for their country, and is marked annually on the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War.
ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day is the anniversary of the landing of troops from Australia and New Zealand on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, in World War I on April 25, 1915. ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service, past and present.
Students, as you will be representing the College, it is important to adhere to the following guidelines:
• Formal uniform with polished shoes
• Formal hat (borrow or purchase new one, if yours is not in good condition)
• NO chewing gum
• Sleepers or studs ONLY
• Bottled water (it is often a very hot day.)
• Apply sunscreen before marching
There are 3 opportunities to march on ANZAC DAY
(Students may attend the following in Bundaberg/Bargara area or with another service/march representing Shalom College)
1. Bargara Dawn Service
2. Bundaberg Civic Service (roll call at 8:00am)
3. OTHER SERVICES (Agnes Water, Rosedale, Moore Park Beach, Elliott Heads, Gin Gin, Childers, Woodgate Beach, etc.) - (Other Services/Marches will be acknowledged if the student attends/marches in Shalom Formal uniform.)
Staff, Parents and Friends, if you plan on marching with Shalom College, please meet at the designated time and place and please wear corporate attire, of a similar standard to students.
If you are marching at the Bargara Dawn Service, please meet at 5:00am at Bargara Service Station and report to Mr Robinson for roll marking.
If you are marching in the Bundaberg Civic Service, please meet outside Indulge Cafe (outdoor tables near Target) at 8:00am and report to Mr Robinson for roll marking.
At the conclusion of the ceremonies, students will be dismissed from the memorial site. Please arrange to collect your student from there.
Your attendance is much appreciated.

Year 10 Camp Information Term 2
Each Head of House will be looking to develop leadership and teamwork with the students in their own house in each of their Camps. I know they look forward to this time each year.
Reminder that there are no phones on camp for obvious reasons but if students need to check in at home, then the Chaverim phone can be used.
Parents - Please go to Parent Lounge and accept your child’s Camp and update any medical details. We ask parents to do this because we print out each students medical details and put in a folder for each Head of House.
Camps start in Week 1 of Term 2 – so we need to be organised.

This week we celebrate our quiet achiever Duru T. Duru is actively involved in both House and school extra curricular activities and always participates with 100% dedication. Her calm and happy exterior is infectious to all those around her and she is often seen being so friendly and supportive to other students both in McAuley as well as the Shalom Community. One of Duru’s most admirable qualities is her humility. She so quietly shows her understanding of MERCY and her ability to SHINE as she involves herself in both academic and extra curricular activities achieving very pleasing results in both.
