At Assembly last week, I spoke to the students about believing that the world is a good place. Anyone reading the news in the last 10 days might be forgiven for thinking otherwise! There has been a lot happening between two awful incidents in Sydney and Israel / Iran / Gaza. I reminded the students that, particularly in those incidents that happened in Sydney, we have a choice about focussing on the individual who did bad things or the numerous people who chose to ‘step up’ in the moment with grace and courage. We now all love ‘bollard man’ and the bloke who unobtrusively ushered the man with the knife away from a mother and her children. We mourn the Pakistani security guard who came to Australia as a refugee lost his life trying to protect shoppers and the other young Pakistani security guard who hurt trying to intercept the attacker. Lots of shop workers locked doors and made sure that people were looked after. I read yesterday that the Bishop who was attacked earlier this week in his Church has very publicly forgiven and prayed for his attacker. There are SO many good people in the world. None of us ever want to be put in a situation to be tested but we all hope, if we have to, we would respond in a way to care and protect others. I hope everyone of our young people would do that. I left the Shalom students with a thought that I hope everyone of us might live by –
Mothers’ Day Date Claimer – I have a sensational Mother's Day Gift idea for everyone! We have managed to secure a visit to Bundaberg by former Olympic Swimming Legend, Libby Trickett (nee Lenton). The Catholic Education Office will be very different shortly. Ms Leesa Jeffcoat who is our long-serving Diocesan Director announced her resignation late last term which will be effective from the end of this term. Leesa has made a huge contribution to Catholic Education and will be missed by many. Bishop Michael announced her replacement this week – former Bundaberg boy, Mr Michael McCusker, who is currently an Assistant Director in the Diocese. We look forward to welcoming Michael to Shalom sometime soon.
We will commemorate ANZAC Day as a College at an Assembly on Wednesday this week. Mr Robinson has been sending out reminders for the many students who will join the College marching at Bargara for the Dawn Service or the ceremony in town. Thank you to all parents who will assist with having their child represent the College in uniform at either of those ceremonies or others to be held in local centres in the district. Lest we forget.

Welcome back to Term 2
A warm welcome back to all Shalom families. We hope that the Easter break was restful and that all students are feeling refreshed and ready for learning. Term two can seem particularly busy with many events, including the Core Studies Learner Conferences, Anzac Day March, Athletics Carnival, and Shalom Formal scheduled for this term. Taking time to review your child’s preparedness for the term and reflect on their organisational and study strategies for homework and assessment is a worthwhile step for encouraging a successful term.
Parents are encouraged to work with their students to develop appropriate homework and study plans – the Record Book is a helpful tool for this purpose. A Homework Study Plan and a Term Planner is included for each term (see p.74 - 77 for Term Two). A monthly or term overview for your child’s study location at home is also a good strategy.
Heads of Department assign assessment tasks in each faculty area and class teachers adapt these to specific days/lessons when applicable. Please be aware that some tasks with multiple components may be duplicated in the Due Work Calendar. Early each term, teachers review term planning and set dates for the term’s assessment. Parents can access upcoming assessment dates for their children via Sia. Each student has a “Due Work Calendar” that shows upcoming dates for checkpoints, drafts, and exams. To access this calendar for your child in the Sia Smartphone App please select “My Shalom” and then “Due Work.” On the webpage, an option to select Due Work will show under your child’s photograph on the home page.
Term 2 Tutoring Timetable
The tutoring timetable is on SIA New for all students to access. It is also included in each edition of our newsletter.
Elevate Education Parent Webinars for Term Two

Again, you are invited to register your participation in the term two parent online webinar series. Year 11 Exam Block – 13-15 May
Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from Monday 13 – Wednesday 15 May. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students participating in this exam block will undergo Unit 1 assessment. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
Parental Consents
As part of Catholic Education – Diocese of Rockhampton (CEDR), Shalom College has as its highest priority the safety and well-being of our students. One of our key processes for upholding student protection is seeking up-to-date parental consents to inform how we share student images and information in accordance with parent directives. Shalom College is subject to Australian Privacy Principles and as per compliance and best practice guidelines we have introduced an online consent system accessible through Parent Lounge to enable parents to update their consent.
You may recall receiving a phone call last year or an email previously requesting you to update these consents from our office staff who assisted you to complete this request. Thank you to everyone who has updated these consents to ensure Shalom is compliant.
There are five (5) areas of consents. We are requesting for a school our size that parents/guardians select “Y” (yes) to ALL 5 fields.
At number 5 ‘Disclosing data with ACARA’. CEDR encourages parents/guardians to provide your information, the exclusion of data could result in reduced funding for the Catholic school your child/children attend.
Where a large proportion of unknown or non-stated student background data is reported, the Socio-Educational Advantage (SEA) quartile calculation for your child’s school is impacted and could result in reduced school funding. It is very important that every parent/carer now reviews and updates their instructions in this regard to ensure our school receives the funding to which it is entitled.
The information that is provided to ACARA is:
- anonymous
- used to inform national reports consisting of aggregated data on school performance, to assist government formulate policies in relation to education matters and
- used to calculate loadings, a critical component of school funding, necessary to support student needs.
To ensure your consents have been updated please access the online Parental Consent via Parent Lounge. If you have not done so previously a how-to guide is attached to this email to assist you. If your need further assistance, please contact the office on 4155 8111.
We are asking you to update these consents by 30 April 2024. Thank you for partnering with us to further enhance our student protection processes.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Holy Week Assembly
On Thursday 28 March we held our Holy Week Assembly. This year’s assembly led us through the Stations of the Cross, the final steps of the journey that Jesus made. In keeping with our theme ‘Garden of Life’, as Tia S took us through each Station, Simon M mirrored it with the contemporary challenge of deforestation. For Christians, responding to environmental issues is about living out our faith and recognising the divine mystery in all things. Therefore, as we reflected on the responsibility that falls on humanity to look after this glorious world, students and staff were asked to also allow their heart and mind to be open to the message of the Easter story.
Tia and Simon during the Holy Week AssemblyEaster Sacraments
During the Easter Vigil Mass at the Holy Rosary Church, we welcomed new members into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. Many in our Parish community joined in this wonderful celebration. We wish those who received these sacraments every blessing as they continue their faith journey. From our Shalom community, we congratulate staff member, Mr Steven Jenes, and students, Eloise B, Freddie J and Evelyn J.
Freddie, Evelyn and Eloise welcomed as new members into the Catholic Church
Children's Mass
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.

Year 11 Biology student, Lara M attended a SPARQ-ED Senior Education program over the Easter break.
SPARQ-ed is a unique biomedical educational program for school students and teachers, located at the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. The program is open to Year 10, 11 and 12 Science, Chemistry and Biology students from across Queensland who are passionate about STEM.
The Senior Research Immersion Program is a unique opportunity for students to explore hands-on introductory biomedical research using the latest equipment and Technology in our fully equipped Physical Containment level 2 (PC2) Lab, working alongside SPARQ-ed teachers and research scientists from TRI.
Lara had a fantastic time in Brisbane – Read what she had to say about the program below.
“I chose to attend the SPARQ-Ed because I thought it would be an amazing experience to help increase my knowledge and also to help me make decisions for my future. Going into this program I knew that I wanted to have a major in science relating to biology.
The workshop was conducting an experiment for a research project that was donated to us by a team at TRI. The program was run in the TRI building in Brisbane for 5 days, 9am – 3pm, with practical and theory components throughout. On the last day we had to make a PowerPoint that summarized our experiment to present in front of family members and other science enthusiasts.
I have experienced many positive outcomes from the workshop such as making new friends, experiences in a high-tech lab, and an understanding of what university life is like. An additional bonus is that I can now apply for an ATAR adjustment based on participation in a research project”.

Australian Rowing Championships
Jada C had a wonderful experience as she competed in Sydney at the Australian Rowing Championships. At the age of 16, Jada competed in Under 19 with the best of the best. Jada progressed from her heat to the repechage where she came 5th in her 2km race. Unfortunately it was tough, the first two were the only rowers that progressed to the Semi-Finals. Jada throughout the week rowed extremely well and every time she rowed she got a personal best with her times. Jada was pleased with her results and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity. Congratulations Jada!

Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships
Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club
Harriet M, Elizabeth P and Amelia W competed at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships held two weeks ago as part of an U17 Patrol Team achieving Silver in the Finals. The team achieved Gold in this event back in February earning a place in Aussies.
They competed against Mooloolaba, Bondi, North Steyne (NSW) & Mullaloo (WA). They had an amazing run in both the physical events of team swim and a tube rescue, excelled in the theory paper and gained near-perfect scores for the Team Resus and Live patient assessment. Their 15-minute scenario was the stuff of legends, rescuing and treating any patients that came their way and doing so with compassion and skill.
Elliott Heads Surf Lifesaving Club
Aarj D, Ethan G and Stevey H also competed at the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. Aarj made the Final (25th) in the Swim and Semi Final in the Ironman and Board, and Ethan made the Final Ironman (17th), Swim Race (28th) and the Semi Final Board race.
Amazing results to make any final at Aussies due to all events being held in one day from heats, quarter finals, semis and finals. They made hard cuts to get through each round. There were over 160 competitors in each age group and 8000 over the course of the carnival.
Great achievement for all Shalom students involved.

Rowing Development Camp - Oarsome Success!
End of Term 1 we held our annual Shalom Rowing Development Camp at Bucca. All the rowers, new and experienced, took on new challenges over the weekend. The Seniors tried out sweep rowing (1 oar instead of 2) in the 4 and the big 8. The new rowers had a go at the most difficult boat, the single. Most stayed on top of the water, but a few went for a refreshing dip. We had heaps of fun practicing the capsize drill and getting back into our boats, playing night games, and finished off the weekend with a fun team relay. There were three teams - Team Sam, Team Kodee and Team Jacob – the jury is still out on which team won as there was lots of early starts!! We were truly blessed with great weather, great food and great company.
The BIGGEST THANK YOU goes out to our parents and volunteers that assisted over the weekend. We had helpers on the water coaching and boat driving, helpers in the kitchen preparing and cooking all the food, help with boat loading and transporting boats. We truly couldn’t have done it without your help and support. It takes a village to make rowing happen and we are grateful for our village. We are looking forward to our next big Bucca adventure - at our first regatta on Sunday 21 April.
Keep being oarsome.
