Last weekend, with my daughter, I was watching, for the fourth time, episodes of ‘Ted Lasso’. Staff and students at Shalom are aware that it's one of my favourite shows of all time. I love the wisdom of the show and the way that a positive culture is built in an organisation. The characters are sensational. We binged Season 3 last Saturday. Episode 11 is a gem. So much great stuff in that one on parenting and the impact we have – for better or worse! Another great conversation that occurs in Episode 11 is between Ted Lasso and Assistant Coach Beard.
“I don’t know about you Coach but I hope that either all of us or
Staffing changes – last week the appointment of Mr Jason Egan as the new Assistant Principal at St Patrick’s Primary School was announced. This is a great credit to Jason who will make a wonderful contribution at St Pat’s. It is a real loss for us however. Jason has been the first Damien Head of House and he is an outstanding teacher. Jason will begin this role in Term 3.
We are also losing, for a time, Mr Bernie O’Sullivan, who has to take some weeks off on medical leave. We all wish Bernie well for this time.
Mr David Gahan is taking some Long Service Leave from this week.
These changes will result in the following staffing changes and a few more will follow as things get finalised –
Mr O’Sullivan
• Year 11 Maths Methods will be taken by Mr Hubbard
• Year 12 Maths Methods will be taken by Mr Maher
• Year 11 General Maths will be taken by Ms Yonsen
• Year 10 Maths will be taken by Mr Muller
Mr Egan
• Year 12 History will be taken by Ms Allen
• Year 12 Legal Studies will be taken by Ms Stallard
Mr Gahan
• Year 10 Maths will be taken by Ms Yonsen
• Year 10 RE will be taken by Mrs Stanley
The 2024 Year 12 Formal was another outstanding occasion last Saturday night. Congratulations to all involved. Students were wonderful and a room full of very proud parents. Very, very grateful to the many Shalom staff who put in many hours to make sure the night went off as well as it did.

Reminder - New Feedback Method - Learner Attributes
A reminder that in 2024, Shalom College has changed the way we give feedback on ‘learning attributes’ of our students to parents. Please note that the upcoming End-of-Semester Report cards will no longer show Application and Behaviour as a result.
Instead, teachers will give feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes. This will be published to parents at the end of Week 5 in Term 1 & 3 for all Yr 7-12 subjects and PC classes, and at the end of Week 5 in Term 2 & 4 for the Yr7/8 rotation subjects that occur in those terms.
Each student will be awarded either a Consistently (4), Mostly (3), Sometimes (2), Rarely (1) or Never (0) in the following criteria:
- Organisation - punctual to class, correct equipment in good working order, laptop charged, record book present
- Application - actively engaged in learning, appropriate use of technology (laptop, phone etc), homework complete
- Presentation - uniform worn appropriately, follows school guidelines for hair, make-up, jewellery etc
- College Values - treats others with dignity and respect, displays a positive attitude
This will appear on Sia Parent Dashboard under ‘Grades’.
and will appear as a mark out of 16.
More detailed information can be found by clicking on the ‘Learning Attributes’ link on the above screen.
After the initial feedback is published, teachers are able to update these criteria and re-publish them to parents at any time throughout the year and add a comment if necessary. Parents are advised of updates via Notifications in Sia. In this way, reporting on your child’s application in class is ‘live’, improving the quality of feedback for parents. We believe this is a significant improvement in our communication with parents, compared with the previous ‘point-in-time’ reporting.

Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Senior students.
Wednesday 5 June Mr Gilbert's 10 RE G & J
Wednesday 12 June Ms Danni Bryson's 10 RE K

Cricket - Shalom Intermediate Teams
On Monday 27 May the Shalom Intermediate cricket team travelled down to Maryborough to play Urangan SHS in the final of the Wide Bay T20 Knockout competition. After a delightful hour and a half of listening to the girl’s cricket teams sing Karaoke (badly) from the back of the bus we arrived just in time to warm up and be ready.
Intermediate Boys
The toss was won by the Shalom Captain Cale A and he chose to bat on what looked like a wicket that would dry out and be hard to bat on later in the day.
Opening Batters Corin D and Tom D put on a good start of 26 runs from 4 overs, unfortunately a slip in communication saw Corin run out on 18 runs off 11 balls. This brought the captain Cale to the crease. Cale and Tom batted brilliantly for the rest of the innings. With Tom bringing up a perfectly played Century in the second last over in the game and Cale scored his 50 with a 4 from the last ball of the innings, to have a final score of 196. Tom finished with 105 off 74 balls and Cale 50 off 42 balls.
In response Urangan SHS struggled to get a hold of the game with the required run rate edging above 18 runs needs per over by the 9 overs. All of Shalom boys bowled and fielded well. With wickets taken by James C, Harry E, Ashton L, Zac H and 2 wickets from Tanner M. In the end Urangan could only manage to be all out for 115 off their 20 overs.
The Shalom boys will now travel down to Brisbane to contest the semi finals later in the year.

Intermediate Girls
The Shalom Intermediate Girls also had a successful day.
The team consisted of Year 7, 8 and 9 girls of varying cricket experience and ability. Shalom scored an impressive 146 from their 20 overs batting, followed by some beautiful bowling to limit the Urangan team to just 87 and take home the win.
Congratulations to the girls. We had a great day playing cricket, with lots of singing and dancing also!
