The recent attempted assassination of Donald Trump was a terrible incident. We all hope and expect that all political processes should be free of violence and intolerance. I have no desire to make a political statement on any of that but I was appalled by a lot of the commentary that went with that awful event. I heard so many, one of whom, to my horror and embarrassment, was a Catholic priest, who claimed that Mr Trump was saved only by the ‘mighty hand of God’. I cannot fathom how so many people, who claim to be Christian, can revere an omnipotent God who can reach down from Heaven and change the trajectory of a bullet or move Mr Trump’s head. Not omnipotent enough not to have Mr Trump lose a bit of
his ear nor omnipotent or loving enough to spare the life of the man in the crowd who died shielding his family. Apparently God loves Mr Trump more than the other gentleman. What sort of God does that? Who wants to believe in a God like that? I believe in a God who loves. I believe in a God who shares and knows our pains and our joys. I believe in a God who offers to walk with each of us and encourages everyone of us to be more compassionate, more loving, more tolerant, every day. That God wants us to do our part to create the Kingdom of God, now, and not wait calmly for Heaven. That God does not reach down from Heaven and protect any of us, Mr Trump included, from harm or evil. Authentic faith is not about hanging around waiting for miracles but getting deeply involved with people, particularly those most in need, and the world in which we live. I hope everyone of your children who experience Religious Education at Shalom, in class and out of class, never subscribe to a belief in a God that will save some from a bullet but not others. God must get so embarrassed, at times, by those who call themselves Christian.School Fees 2025 – I am just wanting to make sure that there will be no surprises for parents when the school fees for 2025 are announced by the Diocesan Office in the next few weeks. Last week’s Newsletter had a PDF attached that explained the ‘all inclusive fee’. A better explanation of that might be ‘an all inclusive educational fee’. This amount will include all fees and subject levies + whole Year level Camps + laptop + P&F Levy + one Vetis funded course + one Distance Ed subject for any subject we offer but can’t staff. It won’t include the Building Levy which, from next year, will be $450 per child. It won’t include overnight excursions or other optional trips. Again, given the change in Federal funding, we are not expecting the total increase in fees to be significant for 2025 but the computations have changed.
Eisteddfod 2025 – Shalom has had, literally, hundreds of students involved in individual and group Eisteddfod items over the last few weeks. Regardless of the outstanding results, Shalom is obviously a ‘powerhouse’ in the Performing Arts in Bundaberg. Our students have been amazing and they are supported by a sensational group of dedicated staff who facilitate them performing as well as they do. Congratulations to all involved.
Year 9 Parents – recently you received a letter from the College about laptops for your child for the next three years. Again, I am just reinforcing with parents the decision to take the school provided device or BYOD is pretty final. It will be very difficult to change your mind down the track. Parents who choose to not take the College device and BYOD, please note that I expect you will get a $400 refund per year on that choice as the laptop cost will, from next year, be included in the fees.

NAPLAN 2024
Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN data was recently released to schools. We have been analysing our data to find our strength areas and any weakness areas that can be addressed. Pleasingly our school data is above the state in the areas of numeracy, writing, reading, grammar and punctuation. Our data is slightly below the state in spelling. Please see the following graphs showing our Year 7 and Year 9 data compared to the rest of Queensland.
Individual NAPLAN student reports were distributed to students during their PC lesson today. On the front page is an explanation on how to read the report. We encourage you to have a conversation with your student about their results. Further information on the NAPLAN individual reports can be found here:

Just a reminder that student results are now assessed in four proficiency levels:
Exceeding: The result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.
Strong: The result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.
Developing: The results indicate that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.
Needs additional support: The results indicate that they are not achieving the learning outcomes expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.
Year 10 Subject Selection & SET Plan Interviews
Last week all Year 10 students were sent an email from the Shalom College email address (Shalom@Shalomcollege.com) with a link to the Webchoices platform and their individual student access code. Hopefully by now your student is familiar with this online portal and how they are to complete their subject selections using the online form.
The SET Plan Interview booking information was also emailed to all Year 10 students and parents. Please use the link provided to select an interviewer and then select a suitable timeslot for your SET Plan interview. A reminder that when you and your student attend the interview, they need to bring with them their:
• fully charged laptop
• green SET Plan Form – A3 sheet
• Webchoices link and access code
• Printed Webchoices form (if already completed)
All interviews will take place on Monday 5 August during the scheduled 30 minute timeslot. This is a ‘work from home’ day for Year 10 students. No Year 10 classes will run at the college, this will allow the interviews to take place on this day. Students are to access their class work through SIA.

Year 7-10 End of Semester One Report Cards Published
Year 7-10 End of Semester 1 report cards were published via Sia on Friday 19 July. Report cards will be available for parents through Sia > Parent Lounge > Academic Reports. More specific information about individual assessment items may be viewed through Sia > My Students.
Students can access their reports via Sia > Services & Support > Applications > Student Café.
Please note that in 2024, only an overall grade for each subject studied will be reported. The Behaviour and Application feedback is now given through Sia > Learner Attributes. This method of reporting the Learner Attributes is more detailed and ‘live’, improving the communication with students and parents.

A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week was held last week with the theme of ‘Communities of Faith, Hope & Love’. As in past years we joined the Bundaberg Catholic Schools for a combined Parish Mass at Holy Rosary to launch the week. Many students and staff attended, and contributed their gifts, to this event. Our prayers and other appropriate routines during the school week also reflected our joy in being part of the greater Catholic Education community.
Students from St Patrick’s shared their special messages for Catholic Education Week with us in the form of glitter, cardboard and colourful pens. We were delighted to receive these and a Year 12 class was invited to respond in kind. They had great fun creating joyous and thoughtful messages to the younger students at St Pat’s.
Year 11 Retreat
Information about this event has gone out to families of Year 11 students. Please go into Parent Lounge to update medical and dietary information and accept the event. The cost is included in school fees.
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 8, 9 and 10 students.

The 2023 College Magazines were handed out to the youngest sibling in each family (Year 8-12) today.
All Year 12s from last year (that do not have a sibling in Year 7-12) will have their Magazine available for collection from Main Reception (This includes our current Gappies). An e-mail has been sent to the 2023 Year 12s to let them know.

Congratulations to Shalom students Liam V and Elise V. Both recently completed at round 2 Balmoral Cycling Tour State competition in U17 and U15 divisions, respectively.
For Liam, results from a field of 23 competitors:
- Prolouge: 14th
- Road race: 16th
- Mountain climb: 16th
- Crit race: 5th 2nd in the intermediate sprint.
Liam placed 10th overall after all racing.
For Elise, results were:
- Prologue: 5th
- Road race: 4th, 3rd in intermediate sprint, Queen of the mountain.

- Crit race: 4th
Elise placed 4th overall after all racing.
Equestrian
Congratulations to former Shalom College Equestrian Makayla C who received second place at the PCQ State Horse Trials 2024 at Beaudesert and Tambourine in the 1 star eventing.
Makayla and Smokin have worked very hard to progress to 1* status. Well done to you both and we continue to wish you the very best as you continue your journey.
Football
After months of training, games and trials at the Football Queensland State Championships in Brisbane and Regional Carnival in Mackay, Shalom College Student Georgia C was selected in the U15 Girls Squad to represent Queensland at the 2024 Football National Youth Championships in Melbourne and the following Shalom College students were also selected from across the Queensland Academy of Sport, Metro Clubs and statewide Football Queensland Academy regional programs as Queensland Squad Shadow Players -

The National Youth Championships for Girls kicks off at the Home of the Matildas in Melbourne on Wednesday 3 July 2024 and the National Youth Championships for Boys starts in Wollongong on 16 July 2024.
Gymnastics
During the Holidays, Ari B represented Gymfinity MAG Gymnastics in two competitions.
- Victoria Park Gymnastics Invitationals - Rockhampton (Individual & Team Event)
- State Clubs Competition - Caloundra Sunshine Coast (Team Event)
Ari was awarded 1st place Overall Champion for MAG Level 4 in Victoria Park with the highest overall score for the day. Ari received six medals (3 gold, 2 silver & 1 bronze) over six apparatus he competed in on the day. These apparatus include Rings, High Bars, Pommel Horse, Parrel Bars, Vault & Floor.
Ari and his teammates competed well in the State Clubs competitions but unfortunately were not placed for this competition. This was a team-only event and unfortunately, they only had three competitors, however, it was a great experience for the boys.
Ari will be competing in the coming months with more competitions such as Invitationals, Regional Championships and then onto the State Championships.
Hockey
Congrats to Shalom students Courtney K and Sophie A who both gained selection in the U/14 QLD Embers Hockey team after playing for Bundaberg at the recent State Championships in Ipswich. They lead the Bundaberg team to 4th place in the State, which is an amazing achievement for such a small country hockey community competing against larger metropolitan communities.
Both Courtney and Sophie, ranked highly on the top goal scorers list for the tournament, with Courtney playing defence and Sophie playing Striker.
The QLD team will head to Perth in September to compete in the National Championships.
Indoor Cricket
Congratulations to Shalom student Toby L who represented QLD in the U18 Indoor Cricket National Championships in Melbourne and the won the National title!
Grand final: WA 101 - QLD 110
The victory was against the odds. WA were unbeaten all week until the GF.
Toby finished overall second top run scorer for the tournament.
Toby will soon head off to Mackay for the QLD Open Boys Outdoor Cricket exchange against NSW in August.
Junior Sedans
Congratulations to Shalom students AJ M and Baxter A who competed at the Qld titles for Junior Sedans in Maryborough prior to the school holidays. 43 cars competed and AJ (pictured) finished 2nd and Baxter finished 6th.
Karting Championships
Shalom student Ky B has had a busy month, with back to back racing, over 3 different countries, travelling over 41,000kms.
Started in Coffs Harbour where he competed in 2 categories, KA3 and KA2. This was treated as a practice round, in readiness for the Australian Kart Championships Rd4 taking place the following week. He won both classes.
Then he flew over to Slovakia where he competed in Rd2 of the FIA Karting Academy. Ky qualified 32nd which meant he had to work hard to move forward through the heats. Unfortunately a DNF (did not finish) in Heat 1 made it even harder. Ky worked hard in Heat 2 finishing 6th and in heat 3 finishing 9th. This was enough to qualify for the final where he started out of 24th. Ky showed pace and finished over the line in 6th, unfortunately a front fairing penalty dropped him back to 14th.
We returned to Australia and drove straight to Ipswich, where he competed in the QLD state championships. Ky was nominated in 2 categories KA3 and KA2. Both classes he was finishing in the top 5 for all heats. Unfortunately lacking in pace for KA3, Ky came 9th in the final. In his preferred category, KA2, he raced extremely well in the final and came away with 2nd.
He then flew over to Singapore, where he competed in the Asia Pacific Karting Championship at KF1 Circuit. The track is very different and hard on the body. He picked it up very quickly.

As the champion for his class, Ky won a ticket to the Rok Cup Superfinal in Lonato, Italy.
Rowing
Our rowers smashed it at the Central Queensland Regatta. Our team doubled their performance compared to last year and finished 4th in the overall medal tally. Most of the rowers progressed from the heats and made it into the semis and finals. We could not be prouder of the team. Year 8 is the youngest age group in Rowing Queensland regattas, so seeing our Year 7 competing and making finals against Year 8s was oarsome! Congratulations to our medalists! Also we have a new record. Not 1, not 2 but 3 oars broken. Too much power in our rowers.

Congratulations to Shalom students Ryan R, RJ D and Cooper F, who represented Wide Bay 12 years Boys Rugby League team that played the State carnival on the Gold Coast in the last week of Term 2.
Tennis - Round 1 Wrap-Up
Congratulations to all Shalom tennis players for coming out in force and playing in Round 1 of Term 3 sport last Wednesday. It was fantastic to see so much red and black and the standard and spirit of play.
In Division A, the formidable Shalom Black was defeated by a strong St Luke’s Blue team 11-6 despite good singles win for our newest player Jack B. Shalom Blue’s combination of Harry K and Lara B defeated a depleted BCC Blue team 8-4. Shalom White received a forfeit from Bundy SHS while Shalom Red had a bye.
Division B saw Shalom Red defeating a determined Bundaberg SHS. The result came down to the last set where Lachlan D and Isaac T held their nerve to win the round for Shalom 14-12. Shalom Black, led by Gabe K and Tokoko W comfortably defeated BCC 14-4.

Immunisation Program Year 10 Round 2 Reminder
Year 10 Students will receive the 2nd dose of Men B – Bexsero (Meningococcal B) on Monday 12 August 2024.
The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised and registered nurses from OzCare in Loyola. Any questions regarding the immunisation program needs to be directed to Ozcare please phone 4130 8979.
Parents are encouraged to ensure their children have breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.

Road Safety Young Driver Awareness - Year 10
Wednesday 14 August
RYDA is a National Road Safety education program for youth in Australia. It provides youth with the skills and strategies they need to stay safe on the roads.
The RYDA workshop features highly engaging practical demonstrations, real-life narratives, videos, quizzes and interactive role play. The RYDA approach supports youth development in a number of areas including social resilience and anticipating and managing risk. Created for senior high schools, RYDA gives students a unique opportunity to set road safety goals and build strategies alongside the friends they will most likely be riding with, as drivers or passengers. At the workshop, students attend six interactive sessions at a dedicated venue over the course of a school day. Back in the classroom, we give teachers everything they need to continue the learning throughout the school year.

Shalom College is offering students the opportunity to participate in organised afterschool activities conducted by coaches and teachers. SCASA also includes a light afternoon tea from 3.15 pm for the students and all activities will conclude at 4.45 pm.

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the 3 available afternoons for SCASA.

The SCASA Fee is $25.00 per term for each student.
This is to help cover the afternoon tea and instructors/coach costs.
This flat fee of $25.00 is for one, two or all three afternoons activities.
This is to encourage participation in SCASA activities.
After completing the SCASA sign on google form, at approximately week 3 of the term - you will receive an invitation on Parent Lounge regarding SCASA.
Please wait until week 3 of term then login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend SCASA and pay the $25.00 fee.
Once there, click on the ‘Tours and Excursions’ tab and you will find a link to SCASA Term 3 - Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend and pay the fee.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed. It is very important that all information in Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the welfare of your child.

Other school sporting teams will continue to have their own training sessions as usual under the direction of their coaches e.g. Strength and Conditioning training, Rugby League, Netball, Touch Football etc.
This SCASA program is designed to give extra opportunities for Shalom College students to become involved in supervised activities after school.

Parents and Carers of Year 11 & 12 Students
If your child has obtained their Provisional Licence and wishes to drive to and from school you are required to fill out a Permission to Drive Form and return it to Student Reception for approval by Mr Aaron Brown. Once approved the details will be placed on our School Register.

Preferred Student Absentee Option
Parents are able to inform the College of student absentees via Parent Lounge, using the below pathway:
Parent Lounge> Student Details> Attendance> "+Add Absence Notification"
The Shalom College App has now been updated so when parents select "Absentee" it will re-direct to Parent Lounge for the absentee notification to be added.

ALL student absentees should be notified to the office by 9am each day. If no notification has been received, an absentee text message will be sent out to parents to advise of the student's absence.
Mia M is a shining member of Chisholm House, excelling both in and outside of school with a quiet determination. She has proudly represented Shalom in various sports, including Rugby League, Touch Football, and Oz Tag, even competing at the Junior State Cup for Oz Tag. Mia's journey of recovery from a sports injury exemplifies her resilience, facing challenges with unwavering positivity and determination. In her spare time, Mia enjoys drawing and consistently demonstrates friendliness, supportiveness towards her peers, and respect for her teachers. She is a valued member of the lime green team, Chisholm.

A reminder to Students and Parents that legislation dictates that families need to provide their own labelled box of Panadol and/or Nurofen for staff to dispense. If you would like our Admin Office to hold medication for your child/children, please submit the appropriately labelled medication box together with a signed copy of the Student Medication form to our Office.

Medical Certificate Absentee Notification
When providing medical certificates for your child/children's non-attendance could you please ensure that these are scanned (jpeg or png) and attached in the email (absentees@shalomcollege.com) or alternatively dropped into the main administration office.
We are no longer able to accept a photo of the medical certificate via email.
If you advise any of your child/children's Teachers or Head of House (via email) of any non-attendance, could you please also advise the admin office via the preferred options. Either email as an attachment to absentees@shalomcollege.com or via the Parent Lounge (as per the process above - under Absentees).
A reminder that if you intend to use the College Fitness Centre, you must follow the steps below:
1. Collect a permission form, either from the Fitness Centre Office or Sports Centre Office.
2. Return the signed form to Miss Mitchell (Sports Centre Office)
3. Complete an induction. These will be completed before school by appointment with Mr Burnett or after school with Miss Mitchell.

Bundaberg Mayoral Telstra Innovation Awards
The final presentations for the MTIA were held on Tuesday 18 June. Two Shalom teams participated along with eight other teams from Bundaberg Schools.
The purpose of the MTIA awards is to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, by helping students in the Bundaberg Region unlock their problem-solving potential and take their big technology ideas to the next level.
Students are inspired to be innovative and collaborative throughout the process. They attend seven, two hour mentoring sessions with industry mentors who provide specialist and technical guidance in the areas of marketing, business modelling, finance and legal considerations, customer base and how to pitch their idea to possible investors.
The two Shalom College teams presented two fantastic ideas on the night.
Team 1 – Adaptipal proposed a solution to the issue of loneliness in the elderly. They designed a small robot that would be able to converse with people whilst also challenging them mentally with games and quizzes. The Adaptipal team consisted of Callum M, Cameron W and Luke M.
Team 2 – Farm to Fertiliser proposed a solution to the waste from produce farms that is created by produce that is unable to be sent to market. They proposed collecting the produce and turning it into compost that could be sold to major retailers. The Farm to Fertiliser team consisted of Rhys N, Ryder D and Archer K.
Whilst the Shalom teams did not win they did a great job in their final presentations and I am sure they would all agree that they learnt a lot throughout the entire process over the past three months.

Academy for Enterprising Girls
On Tuesday 22 July, 35 Year 9 and 10 female students participated in the Academy for Enterprising Girls. This workshop is run by Youth Change Agents and Shalom College was fortunate to be selected for a fully funded one day program worth $2500. The program was run by Tiffani Seaton - Programs Manager and the Indigenous Engagement lead here at Young Change Agents.
We opted to participate in a Design Challenge workshop and the topic was on Mental Health for young people. The students explored and defined issues in Mental Health for young people, specifically in the areas of connection, anxiety and social media use. They then worked together in small groups to design a fix to the problems they identified. At the end of the day they all stepped up and out of their comfort zone to pitch their ideas to the rest of the workshop and all did a fantastic job of this. Some groups also decided to continue further and enter their ideas into a National Design Challenge competition with Youth Change Agents.
A big thankyou to all the girls that attended the workshop on the day. You all engaged extremely well, and I hope that you now wear your Enterprising Girl T-shirt with pride. You earnt it.

Royal Flying Doctors Service visit
Year 11 Health Certificate
Year 11 Health Certificate classes had the privilege, on Wednesday 24July, of visiting the Royal Flying Doctors Service facilities out near the airport. We were made to feel very welcome as we toured the amazing facilities that service not only the Bundaberg region but also wider Queensland. They provide the most amazing service to people who are usually at a very vulnerable period in their lives.
Students had the opportunity to find out what a day in the life of RFDS Registered Nurse, Doctor and Pilot is like as they deal with patients experiencing all level of health issues from the gravely ill to someone who simply needs transfer from one health facility to another. Students also saw the state of art training rooms that they use to ensure that their staff are always up to date in their knowledge and skills.
A big thank you to RFDS Bundaberg for this wonderful opportunity.

Libraries are significant in schools for a number of reasons such as to support research and information literacy, contribute to learning and teaching, engaging student with the written word and cultivating a love of reading. But just as importantly libraries, particularly in schools, provide that safe space for patrons where they will always be welcome.
Library staff were recently surveyed by Softlink, a school library software vendor, to glean their perspective on their roles. In answer to the question “What is the best thing about working in a school library?” they received responses like:
"Building communities, creating connections and finding THE book that transforms a reluctant reader."
"Fostering a love of reading with the students. I always love to hear that a student has enjoyed a book that I have recommended, or they have found in our libraries."
These fabulous responses are evidence that there is an abundance of appreciation and that working in a library environment is self-actualising.

Students who train before school need to consider utilising the breakfast menu to replenish energy lost during their early morning training sessions, however, students must be dressed appropriately before entering the tuckshop and must not be late for class.

The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given. This concludes the weekend of September 14 & 15.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
