Principal’s Reflection

My knowledge of Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, is limited to what I have read in the media and his charismatic launch of the latest Apple gadgets. His slow death was well documented and it is on my list of things to do to go and see the movie, ‘Jobs’ - probably when it comes out on DVD. From what I know, Steve Jobs, by his own admission, was, at times, a fairly unpleasant individual. One’s impending death can have the effect of changing the lens through which we view life. I came across the following recently which is a reflection by Steve Jobs late in his life. It gave me something to think about and I hope it does for you.

“I have come to the pinnacle of success in business. In the eyes of others, my life has been the symbol of success. However, apart from work, I have little joy. Finally, my wealth is simply a fact to which I am accustomed. At this time, lying on the hospital bed and remembering all my life, I realise that all the accolades and riches of which I was once so proud, have become insignificant with my imminent death. In the dark, when I look at green lights, of the equipment for artificial respiration and feel the buzz of their mechanical sounds, I can feel the breath of my approaching death looming over me.

Only now do I understand that once you accumulate enough money for the rest of your life, you have to pursue objectives that are not related to wealth. It should be something more important: For example, stories of love, art, dreams of my childhood. No, stop pursuing wealth, it can only make a person into a twisted being, just like me.

God has made us one way, we can feel the love in the heart of each of us, and not illusions built by fame or money, like I made in my life, I cannot take them with me. I can only take with me the memories that were strengthened by love. This is the true wealth that will follow you that will accompany you, He will give strength and light to go ahead.

Love can travel thousands of miles and so life has no limits. Move to where you want to go. Strive to reach the goals you want to achieve. Everything is in your heart and in your hands.

What is the world’s most expensive bed? The hospital bed. You, if you have money, you can hire someone to drive your car, but you cannot hire someone to take your illness that is killing you. Material things lost can be found. But one thing you can never find when you lose - life. Whatever stage of life where we are right now, at the end we will have to face the day when the curtain falls.”

Internet Safety

Your children are part of the Internet world. It is not uncommon for parents to feel a little ‘left behind’ by this generation. The internet offers enormous benefits for us all. There are also pitfalls. Last year, the College Parents and Friends Association paid a subscription for every Shalom family to access an Internet Safety portal created by Mr Brett Lee. Brett spoke to parents and students at Shalom last year. I would strongly urge parents to make use of the portal to assist you in your understanding of the internet world that offers so much to us all. The link is: http://learn.internetsafetraining.com/ and the password is shalom16.

Parent Teaching Meetings

Parent Teacher Meetings are on again Tuesday evening. I hope that parents continue to support this very valuable link with your child’s teachers. We get our best outcomes for young people when we work together.

Year 11 Parents

Assistance please

It has been a long standing tradition of the College for Year 11 parents to assist with the setting up and packing up of some parts of the Formal Dinner Dance.

Our request is for assistance with:

  • Pack up tables and chairs on Saturday morning (28 May) - fathers and sons most welcome

Last year we had quite a few parents and students come on the Saturday morning and so we were packed up in approximately 40 minutes!

Thank you to all those who have volunteered to help on Wednesday morning, no more volunteers are needed. However, I still need ‘many, many hands to make light work’ on Saturday morning! Please complete the volunteer form on the link below or contact the College.

Camps - A Reminder to Parents

If your child needs medication it must be sent to camp with the child in clearly marked packets. If your child needs an epi-pen, this must be supplied by you - the school does not supply epi-pens for camps.

The Rowing Committee reminded everyone that the Head of the River will take place on the weekend of Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June, while the Central Queensland Regatta will be run on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June.

More detailed information is available by accessing the full minutes of the meeting on the P & F web page on the College website.

Quiet Achiever

This week’s Quiet Achiever is Ayla Duffy, Year 12 Walsh.

Ayla has only been at Shalom for two years and in that time she has embraced everything that has come her way. Whether it be from school initiated activities or extracurricular committees and activities. Ayla has maintained good results and a good balance between her school work, part-time job and everything else she sets her mind to do. The list below outlines some of the areas Ayla has been involved in this year to date.

  • ‘National Youth Science Forum’ participant in Canberra at the beginning of this year.
  • Lions Youth of the Year
  • YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament- The Honourable Youth Member for Bundaberg
  • Bundaberg and Region Youth Council member
  • Blood Bank Ambassador
  • Currently facilitating and managing a series of public youth forums throughout the Bundaberg Region, these are run by youth for youth - looking at the big issues with assistance from Bundaberg Regional Council, Bundaberg Regional Youth Council and Leanne Donaldson MP.
  • RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment)
  • Applicant for the QUOTA Student of the year
  • Invited by producers of X-Factor channel 7 to audition

Ayla is to be congratulated for contributions to Shalom and the wider community through the many and varied programs/committees she is involved in. We wish Ayla all the best for the rest of this year.

Mr Chris Roelofs
Walsh House Coordinator

Special Staff Quiet Achiever

Last week Shalom staff member John Davis along with his wife Julie and Joanna Tolvanen were presented with a Group Bravery Citation by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey for their work during the 2013 floods. Other members of the rescue effort were awarded their pins last year. Congratulations John, from everyone in the Shalom community.

ROSA - Recognition of Student Application Award

The Recognition of Student Application (ROSA) awards will again be presented to nominated Middle School Students towards the end of this term. It was wonderful to see the proud expressions on the faces of those students awarded last term and hear chatter amongst the students eager to know who received a ROSA!

A conversation around work ethic is certainly a conversation worth having with your children. Too often children believe that motivation will just come to them with no effort on their part, and that in order to be motivated they need to be entertained. We must all contribute to our own learning, rather than merely being a bystander. All students, no matter what their current academic ability can reach achievable goals by putting in their best effort consistently.

Mrs Megan Munckton
Middle School Coordinator

Edmund Rice Camp

Next Tuesday 24 May, Edmund Rice Camp will be holding a ‘Sausage Sizzle’. Cost will be $2.50 each (sausage in bread), students may purchase more than one. During PC last week students indicated to their PC teachers if they were wanting a sausage, money is to be paid on the day. Please support the Edmund Rice Camp and buy a sausage or two next Tuesday.

Science & Engineering Challenge

On Thursday 5 May, Shalom sent a team of 25 students to the Science and Engineering Challenge held at Central Queensland University in Bundaberg.

The Science and Engineering Challenge is a day-long competition designed to provide Year 9 and 10 Students with a positive experience of Science and Engineering.

Each school provides eight teams of three or four students. Each team is assigned a challenge in which they must design, build and test something in order to solve a problem. There are eight possible challenges for students to choose from including building a model chair, suspension-buggy, earthquake-proof tower and the strongest bridge.

The students showed some exceptional problem solving and design skills on the day to finish 4th against other regional schools as well as a team from Rockhampton Girls Grammar School. The competition was taken out by Bundaberg State High School. This performance earned Shalom an ‘Edison robot’ as a prize which will be donated to the Science department.

The day was enjoyed by all who attended. Once again the Shalom students participated in the great spirit that Shalom is known for.

Competition Coordinator

Rugby League

Recently both the Shalom Open Rugby League team, and their Under 13 counterparts commenced their 2016 campaign to win the Broncos Challenge with a first round match against a rejuvenated team from Bundaberg North State High.

The matches were held at Shalom’s oval which enabled a large crowd to assemble to see both teams demonstrate a good level of Rugby League Ability.

The Under 13’s played first with Shalom scoring a narrow win. Shalom led by 10 points heading into the second half, however Bundaberg North scored a converted try creating a tense final few minutes for the home side. Luckily, time ran out for the visitors enabling Shalom to head into the second round of the competition, gaining much respect from the Bundaberg North team that played very well on the day.

After witnessing a great effort from the Under 13’s, the Shalom Open team took to the field wanting to maintain an unbeaten record at their ground which stretches back two seasons. By applying good cohesion and using simple edge structures, Shalom headed to the half time break leading 16 nil with a highlight including Josh Haack scoring two tries and kicking as many goals, both from the sideline.

The second half was more of an arm wrestle as the Bundaberg North team dug in their heals, causing frustration and simple errors from the home side. Bundaberg North presented some good elements in attack and made several line breaks requiring committed last line defence from both Martin Powel and Cody Breuer to prevent the Bundaberg North side from scoring.

The final score remained 16 nil with the disappointment of not adding to the half time score being washed away by a spirited team song in front of a parochial home crowd.

The Shalom Open team, along with Under 13’s, now progresses to the second round of the Broncos Challenge, with each of the other grades. All teams play Kepnock in the 2nd round, with the Open team to play at Kepnock today Monday 16 May and the Under 13’s, 14’s and 15’s will play at an alternative venue on Wednesday 18 May.

Instrumental Music

Rockhampton Diocesan Music Camp

An information letter and google doc application form has been distributed to all instrumental music students. If you would like to attend this music camp, please submit the google form by Friday 20 May so that we can organise transportation in the College coach. Accommodation for those who need it will be billeted and I have been reassured by the music staff at The Cathedral College that they will be billeted together in groups of 2-3. This has been the arrangement since the camp started and lifelong friends have been made as a result.

Acoustic Pianos needed

We are still on the lookout for 4 to 5 upright pianos that could be offered to the College as a donation or at a very minimal cost (we will organise transport and tuning). These instruments are to go into the teaching studios in the new instrumental music building, which is currently being built. The pianos would need to be no older than 30 years, in reasonably good condition and not be affected by flood waters. If you are able to assist, could you please contact me.

Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival

I have entered the following groups for this year’s music festival: Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Senior Concert and Senior Jazz Bands; Chamber and Rochford strings; Thursday morning Concert Band; Friday morning Jazz Band B and the full Orchestra. Please note that we are not taking the year 7/8 Concert or Jazz Band this year. We will participate over a three day period from Friday 12 August to Sunday 14 August. As soon as I have the schedule, I will let everyone know as many students will need to make a day trip while many others will need to stay overnight. Bookings have been made for Friday and Saturday night. More details to come soon.

Drama

The first public performances for the Drama department will be Thursday 16 June where Year 10 public performance students will present eight One Act Plays as their assessment items. The night begins at 6.30pm in the PAP theatre with entry being a gold coin donation. All welcome, so please come along and support our drama students.
