Related to our Harmony Day assembly last week, is the issue before the Australian people of the ‘Voice’ referendum. This is a really important issue and one that all of us should work hard to reflect upon in order to make an informed decision. There is a lot of commentary, on both sides of the debate, at the moment. I believe that one of the preeminent voices on this issue is that of Fr Frank Brennan SJ. Fr Frank has spent his life living and working with First Nations people and with the law. He is a lawyer himself and his father was a Judge on the High Court of Australia. There are few people worth listening to more than Fr Brennan. He had an article published in a Sydney paper recently that is worth a read (link below) as you come to a decision on whether or not to support this pending referendum.

Lent and Easter
Lent is the 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that began on Ash Wednesday. It lasts for six and a half weeks (Sundays are not counted as part of the 40 days). Lent is ultimately a period of preparation for the Lord’s Resurrection at Easter.
Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death by crucifixion. It occurs on the first Sunday following the first full moon of spring in the northern hemisphere. Unlike Christmas, which is always on the same date each year, Easter moves with the lunar calendar and has done so since the Council of Nicaea in 325. Therefore, in 2023, Easter will take place on April 9. The Easter Season itself lasts for 50 days following Easter Sunday, ending on the feast of Pentecost. This year it will end on May 28.
The two seasons intentionally contrast each other. Lent is a time for quiet reflection and preparation whereas Easter is a hope filled season of celebration. The College community will remember the events of the last days of Jesus’ life through a Holy Week Prayer Assembly this Thursday.
“Jesus’ hope is different. He plants in our hearts the conviction that God is able to make everything work unto good, because even from the grave He brings life.” Pope Francis, Easter Vigil Homily, 2020

Anzac Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have fought and died for their country, and is marked annually on the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War.
ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day is the anniversary of the landing of troops from Australia and New Zealand on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, in World War I on April 25 1915. Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service, past and present.
Students, as you will be representing the College, it is important to adhere to the following guidelines:
• Formal uniform with polished shoes
• Formal hat (borrow or purchase new one, if yours is not in good condition)

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The ‘goal posts’ for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.
Shortly teachers will select up to two students from each of their middle school classes to nominate for a Term One ROSA award. These students will be presented with the award on House Assembly early in Term Two. The awardees will have their name published in the Shalom Newsletter.

Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation Scholarship Recipients
Earlier in the term we congratulated 12 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who have received a QATSIF Scholarship for their senior years of schooling. QATSIF was created to give Queensland's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families increased educational choices and life opportunities. QATSIF provides educational scholarships to support eligible First Nations students with the educational costs of their senior studies. Those funds represent the toil of previous generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders who laboured under now-repealed control laws and policies. QATSIF will always stand as a permanent and positive legacy for the future, and we are thankful for QATSIF for allowing the Indigenous Education Support Team here at Shalom College to help guide and support our senior First Nations students to graduation. The following list of students are our current QATSIF scholarship recipients for 2023-2024:
Kaleb A – Gumbaynggir
Rhani D – Gunggari
Chloe E – Gooreng Gooreng
Daniel H – Wiradjuri
Ella H – Kamilaroi

Harry L – Iningai
Hunter L – Mununjali
Savannaha M – Gubbi Gubbi

Greetings to all Japanese enthusiasts.
As the end of term one approaches, we are proud to share some of the outstanding achievements of our students in Japanese language classes. Our Year 7 students have put together an impressive Sushi Samurai video, showcasing their self-introductions and love for Japanese cuisine. We were delighted to see their enthusiasm and passion for the language and culture of Japan. We invite you to attend the Year 7 and 8 culminating day in Term 3 to view some of these amazing projects.
In Year 8, our students have been studying the fascinating world of Japanese mythical creatures, known as the Yookai. They have shown tremendous effort in researching and presenting their findings on these creatures, which has been truly remarkable. We encourage parents to ask their children about the Yookai and learn more about this intriguing aspect of Japanese folklore.
Moving on to our senior classes, Year 10 students are gearing up for an exciting excursion to the sushi train, where they will get to experience authentic Japanese cuisine and culture. Meanwhile, our Year 9 students will be concluding their term with a Japanese cooking class. We can't wait to see the photos of their creations and share them with you in the next newsletter.
We are thrilled to see our students displaying such enthusiasm and passion for Japanese language and culture. I thank Mrs Anderson for her efforts and commitment to providing our students with an authentic and engaging learning experience. Stay tuned for more exciting updates and events in the coming term.

Congratulations to Cooper L (Year 12) for his involvement in the Lions Youth of the Year for 2023. The competition has been running for decades and is an event that supports young people to develop their public speaking and interview skills as well as engaging them with the wider community.
Cooper won both the Hinkler and Fraser Coast rounds of the event, and on Saturday 18 March he participated in the regional final in Rockhampton. He spoke with insight and passion, and to his credit had the ability to prepare rigorous responses to two impromptu questions. Although he was not the overall winner on the evening, his skill and distinction won him the public speaking prize.
If there are any Year 11 students who would be interested in participating in this event for 2024, please keep an eye out for notices later in the year.

When it comes to reading, we may be labouring under a false assumption that for reading to be considered ‘academic’ that it must be conducted as research for knowledge. However, recent research suggests that reading fiction may provide far more important benefits than nonfiction.
Some attributes are hard to define, evaluate, or quantify; self-discipline, self-awareness, creative problem-solving, empathy, learning agility, adaptiveness, flexibility, positivity, rational judgment, generosity, and kindness, among others. Recent research in neuroscience suggests that a trip to the nearest library might help to develop these as its believed that reading literary fiction helps to develop empathy, theory of mind, and critical thinking.
The cognitive muscles that we develop when we read are the foundation for emotional intelligence. The act of reading can develop these qualities, the implication being that fiction is actually more beneficial than non-fiction in this case. Fiction incites the increase in acuity necessary to understand other people’s motivations. So while non-fiction adds primarily to your knowledge base, it is fiction that enhances these valuable social perspectives.
American CEO Marvin Riley adopted a program of literary reading and discussion to establish psychological safety, a spirit of collaboration, meritocracy and critical thinking. His program can at the very least take credit for increasing work teams’ openness and communicative skills which effectively use a shared language. Joseph Badaracco, Professor of Business Ethics at Harvard, concurs that non-fiction works supply us with information, but fiction provides an opportunity to complicate standard good versus evil tropes. He states that good literature will present characters with competing and often equally valid viewpoints requiring the reader to make informed decisions, provoking emotional and cognitive development.
Though there is no academic data to quantify these claims, it is becoming a commonly accepted notion that where ‘guided literature study’ has been incorporated into workplace training, it has impacted on the employee’s capacity for critical thinking, creativity, and empathy. Cognitive scientist and author of 'Reader, Come Home', Maryanne Wolf proposes that “the quality of our reading stands as an index to the quality of our thought.” The premise here being that better thinkers will develop from better recreational readers.
Shalom QISSN Boys Team - Bundaberg Netball Carnival
Our QISSN boys team competed in the Bundaberg Netball Carnival on Sunday 19 March. Despite being together for only 3 ½ weeks the results were quite good and better than expected. Our first game was against Bundaberg State High School who are an experienced and skilled team, we held our own for the first quarter but BSHS were too strong and beat us 15-37. Our second game was against St Luke’s Anglican School, this was a much better match for us as they had similar experience and preparation time as us, it was a good game to watch and we came away with the win 21-12. Our third game was against BSHS again, this was also a good game to watch and we closed the gap from the first game with BSHS winning 15-17.
There were some great positives and takeaways from the day and I’m excited to see how this team progresses and what we can achieve after a few more months together - for now, we'll celebrate coming second place at our first carnival!

Rowing Development Camp - Oarsome Success!
Over the weekend, we held our first annual Shalom Rowing Development Camp at Bucca. All the rowers, new and experienced, took on new challenges over the weekend. The Seniors tried out sweep rowing (1 oar instead of 2) in the 4 and the big 8. The new rowers had a go at the most difficult boat, the single. Most stayed on top of the water, but a few went for a refreshing dip. We had heaps of fun practicing the capsize drill and getting back into our boats, playing night games, and finished off the weekend with a fun team relay. There were three teams - Team Archie, Team Emily and the winning team - Team Sam!! We were truly blessed with great weather, great food and great company.
The BIGGEST THANK YOU goes out to our parents and volunteers that assisted over the weekend. We had helpers on the water coaching and boat driving, helpers in the kitchen preparing and cooking all the food, help with boat loading and transporting boats. We truly couldn’t have done it without your help and support. It takes a team to make rowing happen and we are grateful for our team. We are looking forward to our next big Bucca adventure - at our first regatta on Sunday 7 May.
Thank you to our sponsors below. We will have a new team shirt soon to show off thanks to these businesses.
