Huge thank you to Mrs Austin-Campbell and the College Leadership team for filling in so very capably for me while I was away. I am privileged to work with these people, and we are enormously lucky to have them at Shalom.
Bullying is as certain as ‘death & taxes’. Whenever people are put together, inevitably, some will try and exert undue power over others. We work hard at Shalom to reduce incidents of bullying and respond quickly when this occurs. On Thursday of this week, former World Boxing Champion, Mr Jeff Horn will speak to all students on Assembly and particularly to the Year 7 and 8 students, as we launch the Bullyproof Australia initiative at Shalom. Jeff will speak to all parents on the topic at 7pm in the Performing Arts Precinct. This is a great opportunity for parents to listen to a great speaker and to learn some skills to help your own child navigate this issue.
Enrolment Interviews for Year 7 2024 will get underway very soon. Mrs O’Mara tells me that we have more interviews to do than in previous years. I truly hope that we won’t, again this year, have current parents who neglect to put in an enrolment application for their Year 6 child and just expect to secure a place over those who have put their applications in on time!
Empowering Women Breakfast is sold out for this Friday morning. We are really looking forward to welcoming to Bundaberg and the Shalom community, Gretel Bueta (Tibbet) and Ali Brigginshaw. Both outstanding National athletes in Netball and Rugby League. The breakfast, which is a week before Mothers’ Day, is an encouragement and a reminder to our girls that no boundary that is beyond them. Huge thank you to our sponsors and the organising committee led by Ms Nikki Sommerfield in making this happen.

Year 11 Term 2 Exam Block Timetable
Attached is the Year 11 Exam Block occurring in week 5 from Monday 15 May – Wednesday 17 May. Students need only attend school for the exams they are to sit during this time. Expectations for students throughout the exam block are also attached.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

ANZAC Prayer Assembly
The College Assembly held on Thursday 20 March was dedicated to commemorating ANZAC Day. The resurfacing of the Sports Centre floor required a move to the Performing Arts Theatre, allowing some Houses to attend in person, while others watched the livestream from their PC classrooms.
The College Symphony Orchestra provided a warm welcome before a catafalque party from 9RQR Bundaberg was posted. Other significant parts of our ceremony included three Shalom students, dressed in their Army Cadet uniforms, placing poppies for those we prayed for, and The Treble Makers leading us in the anthems following The Last Post.
When we gather to commemorate, we remember those who have served our country during times of crisis and to reflect upon their selfless sacrifice. We are also very mindful that there are many people around the world currently working for peace, and we pray with great hope that this will be realised.
No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13)
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. When your student has an upcoming class Mass, you will receive a notification or an invitation to attend. We warmly welcome all to this weekly joint Parish School celebration. The Year 11 Religion & Ethics classes are hosting over the next few weeks.

Year 12 Biology Camp – 19-21 April 2023
On Wednesday morning in Week 1, the Year 12 Biology students and 3 teachers set off for their trip over to Konomie Island. It was a very early start, with the bus leaving Shalom at 4:25am and not arriving at Keppel Bay Marina, Yeppoon until 9am where the students then boarded the ferry, Gundoo Spirit.
The boat trip was very rough and quite a few students became sea-sick, but it was worth it because when we arrived at Sandy Beach, we knew we were going to have a great time!
This camp was designed to allow students time to collect data for their IA2: Student Experiments, so after unpacking luggage, we set off to gather information from sand dunes and the inter-tidal zones on the camp side of the island. We also had the opportunity to classify plankton under the microscope later that night.
The next morning saw us all get into stinger suits and outrig over to the other side of the island where we collected data from the sand dunes and mangroves. That night we enjoyed damper cooked over the campfire, some music and were even able to watch the Panthers vs. Rabbitohs game on the big screen in the classroom.
The Konomie Island teachers were fabulous, and all knew so much about the Island’s history, along with the different types of mangroves, grasses, molluscs, etc. They were also very impressed with the organisation and efficiency of the Year 12 Shalom students, and how respectful and well-behaved they were throughout their stay.
The Biology teachers want to thank the Year 12 students for an excellent camp and their parents for allowing them the opportunity to experience Konomie Island.

Congratulations to our Shalom team for winning the Wide Bay Division of the CQU Business Challenge on Thursday 27 April at the CQU Bundaberg campus.
Shalom was represented by Year 12 students Amelia T, Finley C, Erika R and Ryland G. Each of these students is studying one or more subjects across Legal Studies, Business and Accounting. They were accompanied by a very proud Mrs Revelo, one of our senior business teachers at Shalom.
Our team competed against eight other teams from St Luke’s, North State High School, Bundaberg State High School, Isis State High School and Gin Gin State High School. The Wide Bay Division competition was held simultaneously with the other divisions across Queensland and we also obtained the top score statewide.
Well done to our team for their win and for defending the title as Shalom was also the winner in 2022. We wish Amelia, Finley, Erika and Ryland all the best as they will compete in the overall State final in Term 3.

Dance Performance Team - Dance Star Regional Qualifiers
Our very talented Junior and Senior Performance Teams have kicked off the year with some amazing results from their first two competitions.
In the Easter Holidays, they competed on home turf at the Bundaberg Festival of Dance which was a wonderful opportunity to put their new routines on the stage for the first time. They received fantastic scores and valuable feedback ready for the following weekend in which the team travelled to the Sunshine Coast for the Dance Star Regional Qualifiers. This was a qualifying competition for the State Finals in June which not only did every routine both group and soloist achieve, but Shalom ranked 1st or 2nd in most of their sections and produced some of the highest scores of the day. It was a successful weekend all-round and was a wonderful time for the teams to bond. Now they have their sights set for Finals in the hopes of qualifying for the National Championships in Adelaide this August.

Beautiful Japanese Words
Language is not just about communication; it's a reflection of a culture's history, values, and beliefs. Japanese, in particular, is known for its vast vocabulary and nuanced expressions, with over 500,000 words compared to English's 170,000.
This term, we invite you to explore some of the uniquely beautiful Japanese words that are difficult to translate into English. These words offer us insights into Japanese culture and inspire us to see the world through a different lens.
The first beautiful Japanese word is “Komorebi”, which refers to the sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees. It’s a word that perfectly captures the beauty of nature and the peacefulness of being surrounded by trees.
In Japanese culture, nature is often seen as sacred and “Komorebi” reminds us of the importance of taking a moment to appreciate the beauty around us.
One of my favourites is the word “Wabi-Sabi”, which refers to the beauty in imperfection and the acceptance of transience. This philosophy has its roots in the tea ceremony, where a chipped or imperfect teacup can be seen as more beautiful than a perfect one.
“Wabi-Sabi” encourages us to find beauty in the imperfect and to appreciate the fleeting nature of life. It reminds us that everything is impermanent, and that imperfection can be beautiful in its own way.
In conclusion, Japanese culture is full of beautiful words that remind us of the importance of resilience, appreciation, and acceptance. Learning about these words can broaden our understanding of language and culture, and perhaps even inspire us to see the world in a new light.

The UQ Science Ambassador program is run by the University of Queensland. It is designed to raise the profile of Science with our school community. It does this by recognising high-achieving and motivated Year 11 senior science students.
These students are expected to champion Science at Shalom College by developing and delivering events that focus on Science. They are responsible for running the Science Club during Terms 2 and 3. This is a weekly lunch time club that is designed to ignite a passion for science in the junior year levels. Students participate in fun and interesting science practicals such as chemistry experiments and dissections along with other fun quizzes and competitions. Science club got off to a great start this week with groups undertaking a practical activity to grow crystals which will be entered in the National Crystal Growing competition, run by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
The UQ Science Ambassadors will also be heavily involved in the planning and running of Science Week activities in August this year.
As a reward for their participation in the UQ Science Ambassador program students are given a laboratory coat with their name and the school crest monogrammed on it. The University of Queensland also provides them with a tie badge.
The Year 11 UQ Science Ambassadors for 2023 are:
Neha A, Zain A, Isabel A, Tenamo A, Jayden A, Ella B, Sam C, Cait D, Charlie D, Kay H, Steven P, Bailey R, Atlanta S, Ruby T, Olivia W, and Arielle Y

On November 30 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot which uses software able to replicate human conversation and with the capability of creating original material from simple or complex prompts.
It seems that there is much discussion about the implications of content creation particularly in the education sector. As information professionals, librarians are concerned mostly with the ethical issues surrounding the use of the technology but in many cases school librarians have responded with curiosity about what it could mean for their profession and in classrooms around the school.
Artificial intelligence can compile a passable, even quite good essays on a given topic, but can it deliver work that is relevant, creative, or nuanced in the manner required by the assessor? The student may, however, make use of natural language processing (NLP) models such as ChatGPT to refine their research investigations. Where once upon a time librarians would instruct students on Boolean searches on the internet, now they are assisting students to create search queries through AI.
- Schools can use ChatGPT in a variety of ways, such as:
- Providing reference assistance
- Providing language assistance for non-native speakers.
- Recommending books and other materials
- ChatGPT can assist students in generating ideas, writing outlines, and proofreading their work.
- Providing digital resources and online tutorials
- Creating interactive learning experiences: ChatGPT can be used to create interactive learning experiences, such as virtual book clubs or author visits.
Most of the debate on these tools' focusses on plagiarism, but unless the purpose of the complex assessment can be adequately conveyed to the software, it is likely not going to be able to present anything that adequately answers the question. So, it seems pertinent to harness this paradigm in a constructive way, shifting the focus from cheating to establishing worthwhile applications of freely available technology. In this way schools can launch a more powerful design for learning that promotes future-ready, tech-savvy learners that are flexible and adaptable.
Whichever way we choose to view the technology and employ or boycott it, it is not going to go away. This is going to be the future.
