Over the last few weeks, parents received a nagging email asking you to complete a ‘School Satisfaction Survey’ which is part of our Diocesan School Improvement processes. We got an excellent response rate from parents. Below is a summary of the data received.
This is very positive data for the College and the commentary supplied by parents supported that. That said, in the section that offered parents the chance to share issues of concern, there were a few common themes. These were:
• Car park stress
• Attendance processes
• Vaping
• Classroom behaviour
• Bullying
Instead of responding in writing to all of those, I've created a five-minute video clip (link below) where I spoke about each of these. I hope this helps but if any parent has any additional query or comment, please do not hesitate to contact me again.
Thank you again to all of those who took the time to complete the survey. It’s always good to get your feedback.
Interhouse Athletics Carnival is on Thursday and Friday of this week. We’re looking forward to an enjoyable and positive couple of days. Again, this is one of our ‘special days’ at Shalom. Attendance is not optional and will count against our 90% attendance benchmark and the 80% required for Special Days. If there is a really good reason your child can’t attend all or part, please make sure you communicate this clearly to your child’s House Coordinator.
Date Claimer – following our recent ‘Empowering Women’s
Breakfast', we are looking to hold a ‘Mens’ Wellness’ Breakfast just before Fathers’ Day this year. This event will be held on Thursday 31 August at The Waves Sports Club. The guest speaker for this event will be Darius Boyd. Darius is very well known in Rugby League circles has represented his State and Country on many occasions. The Breakfast will be run in partnership with ‘Brave Brothers’ a local group committed to improving mens’ health and wellness.

Edmund Rice Camps – Bake Sale Success!
Student volunteers baked and sold goods at our first Edmund Rice Camps bake sale. There were lots of delicious treats for sale and the stall was supported well by students and staff. The Bake Sale raised $687 dollars towards the camp in September, when children, who otherwise may not have the opportunity, are treated to a stay at Chaverim. Senior students will attend camp to act as ‘Big Buddies’.
Last week we had guest presenters, David Kobler and his colleague Beck Neale, provide an interactive presentation on some very real issues for young people. David has been coming to Shalom for a number of years and we appreciate his knowledge and skills in developing and presenting these workshops. We thank them both for travelling to Bundaberg to work with our students.
House Mass
During the scheduled House Assembly time on Thursday 13 July, Rice House and McAuley House will participate in a House Mass presided by our Parish Priest, Father Don White. We will use the PAP theatre as the venue for this Mass.
Class Masses
Each Religious Education class is allocated to a Wednesday morning 8am Mass in Loyola Chapel. The class, along with another, co-hosts this Parish Mass by taking the roles of readers and processors. When your student has an upcoming class Mass, you will receive a notification or an invitation to attend. We warmly welcome all to this weekly joint Parish School celebration. The Year 10 classes will be hosting over the next few weeks:
• 21 June Mrs Harman’s 10 RE A & C
Sacramental Program
Confirmation and Eucharist are two of the seven sacraments of initiation through which Catholic Christians pass in the process of their religious upbringing. In Confirmation they are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands and the anointing with oil. In the Eucharist they receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. Through these two sacraments they are strengthened to continue their journey in adult Christian life.
We would like to congratulate the following Shalom students who were Confirmed at the beginning of June and made their First Communion over the past two weekends at our churches. Along with the 55 primary school students from the various Bundaberg schools. Congratulations to you all.
Rebecca G, Kellie B, Jack B, Sophie B (all Sacraments) and Annica A & Monique A (Confirmation only).
If you are interested in your child completing their Sacraments, please contact either Anne Sheehan our Sacramental Coordinator at the parish office on 4151 6666 or via email litcord.bundaberg@rok.catholic.net.au or Mrs Petersen, Campus Minister at Shalom on 4155 8160 or via email petersenc@shalomcollege.com

As parents, we all want to see our teenagers feel empowered when reviewing their assessment feedback. Receiving feedback can often be challenging, as no one likes being criticised. However, we can help our teens see feedback as an opportunity for growth and improvement. Feedback should be seen as ‘The gap between what is understood and what is aimed to be understood’ (Hattie & Clarke, 2019).
Feedback serves various functions, such as reinforcing success, correcting errors, identifying misconceptions, suggesting improvements, providing future improvement advice, and praising. When discussing your child's writing, focus on the qualities of their work, specific ways in which it can be improved, and the improvements they have made compared to their earlier work. This approach helps build their self-esteem and confidence.
To effectively engage with the feedback your child receives, you can provide purposeful and goal-focused guidance. Help your child understand the assessment objectives and align them with the feedback they received. Moreover, encourage self-reflection in your child by asking thought-provoking questions that prompt them to analyse their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for growth based on the feedback. By actively participating in the feedback loop, you empower your children to internalise the feedback, make necessary changes, and continuously strive for excellence in their assessments. By discussing the feedback and emphasising the constructive nature of the comments, you create an environment that promotes a growth mindset. This mindset highlights that mistakes are opportunities for learning and improvement.
One way to start a conversation about assessment feedback with your child is by asking them what helpful feedback they received at school that day. This opens a dialogue and encourages them to reflect on their learning process. It's important to foster a growth mindset in our children, where they understand that their writing can be developed through working on using feedback to improve their skills and the quality of their work. By providing support and empowering them through teacher feedback, we can unlock their academic potential and help them become confident and successful learners.

Phoebie R is a Year 9 MacKillop PC 1 student who is certainly a quiet achiever. Phoebie plays competitive lawn bowls and has been selected to play for Queensland in the Junior Golden Nugget Championship. Quite an achievement when only 20 girls are selected across Australia. This competition is the most prestigious junior competition in all of Australia. Phoebie is a valued member of MacKillop House not only for her sporting ability but also for reflecting our House values and ideals through her behaviour and presentation each day.
Bundaberg Inter-School Debating Competition Recap
The Bundaberg Inter-School Debating Competition wrapped up last Thursday evening with final debates in divisions from Year 7-10.
This year, Shalom entered three teams into the competition: a combined Year 7 and 8 team competing in the Year 8 competition; a Year 9 Team and a Year 10 team.
All the teams did a fantastic job, showing great improvement in their skills over the term. There were some challenging topics which stretched their critical and creative skills. A particularly important aspect of debating is developing a team approach and working together on argument development and rebuttal. These are great skills for our students to take with them into their studies and beyond.
Given only one competitor had participated in a formal debate competition prior to this year, the Year 7/8 Team were particularly impressive as they not only won their division but were undefeated for the tournament. All the students are to be congratulated on their efforts.
A particularly important aspect of our participation in this tournament were the contributions of a team of Year 11 and 12 students who acted as team coaches and filled the important rolls of Timekeeper and Chairperson for the debates.
Thank you to all of our following debaters - Torah S, Max L, Desilva D, Phoebe R, Asha D, Layla J, Lola W, Duru T, Callum M, Lara M, Sithuki W, Joann J, Jaslyn P, Cooper L, Lauren R, Lilly M and Ashlee B.
We look forward to next year’s event and hope to see more Shalom students participating in this great local competition!

Bundaberg Mayoral Telstra Innovation Awards 2023
The Awards encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, by helping students in the Bundaberg Region unlock their problem-solving potential and take their big technology ideas to the next level by:
• Nurturing the knowledge base that exists among the young people of our region
• Inspiring students to be innovative and collaborative by:
• Encouraging teamwork between students
• Giving students an opportunity to present their ideas and concepts to a wider community audience
• Recognising the efforts and achievements of students.
• Highlighting the importance of study in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields for the future of the Bundaberg Region – building a knowledge-based economy.
• Fostering a culture of entrepreneurship amongst the young people in the region through:
• Connecting students with opportunities, business community, camaraderie, and support channels available
• Providing students with valuable experience and knowledge regarding entrepreneurship
• Incentivising students to take risks by making their own decisions to explore different opportunities.
Shalom College entered a team of three very enthusiastic students: Luke M (Year 9), Thomas B and Callum M (Year 10).
The boys have been working very hard on their innovative idea since Term 1. They have attended five, two hour, mentoring sessions early in term two working with industry specialists in the areas of business, finance and marketing.
The journey culminated in a presentation night on Wednesday 14 June where the boys pitched their idea to Bundaberg City Councilors, Mentors, Peers, Family and Friends and of course the judges.
Their innovative idea – Quick Q – was an app that aids students in submitting questions to their teacher without the possibility of them being judged.
They did a fantastic job and were very well spoken on the night. The responded to the judge’s questions with confidence. Whilst they did not win the competition, I have no doubt the boys will tell you that they thoroughly enjoyed the process and have learnt a lot over the past few months.

Instrument Music - Next Level High School Talent Competition
A month ago, applications and audition recordings were accepted by the Bulldogs Next Level High School Talent Competition. Our two college rock bands and the duo “3 Above” (Brooklyn S and Isla M) were successful in making it through to the Heats that were held over two nights at The Waves Sports Club.
Brooklyn and Isla impressed the judges on Wednesday 7 June, taking out 1st place granting them the opportunity to perform live on radio and at the Bulldogs/Dolphins game day at Salter Oval on July 30.
The Cherry Reds and Shalom Rock Band had their chance on Wednesday 14 June, with the Shalom Rock Band taking 2nd place. Both bands performed very well and should be very proud of themselves.

A special shout out to our Senior Rowers that competed in the 8 (Emily P, Jacob N, Emily E, Marlene D, Kodee P, Cecilia T, Sam C, Ryan S, cox Ellouise R). The 8 is the pinnacle of rowing and it is not every year we have enough rowers to put an 8 on the water. So, it was exciting that this year we could, and nothing beats the power of 8 senior rowers in one boat. I hope that this is a memory the rowers will cherish, especially with receiving a silver for that event. The final event to take out the HOR trophy was an Open Mixed Quad. Our team of Emily E, Montana W, Sam C & Kodee P, cox Zac W put in an exceptional effort and came home with a bronze.
A big congratulations to all the rowers on their outstanding commitment to this oarsome sport and a huge THANK-YOU again to the parents, coaches and volunteers that assisted the rowers and the team throughout the local season. Check out our new team shirts and hats thanks to our sponsors. Next regatta we are travelling away to Rockhampton for the Central Queensland Championships on the Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June. Look forward to sharing the team’s success after the regatta.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
