It seems to be a human characteristic that most of us don’t relish change. We have routines and rituals that are pretty constant. We stick with the same cereal brand, we buy the same type of car, we sit in the same pew in Church. Change is always challenging but, most times, worth the effort. For all its faults and failings, I love the Catholic Church. The Church continues to do a power of good for those most at risk. It sticks up for unpopular causes in the name of right. Faithful Catholics give their lives every year around the world in efforts to create a more just and peaceful world. But it is one of my frustrations as a Catholic that we only do ‘glacial change’! Last Saturday’s ‘Australian’ newspaper quoted the senior Queensland Bishop, Archbishop Mark Coleridge of Brisbane, as suggesting that the time may well have come for the Church to reconsider the practice of mandatory celibacy for priests. The Archbishop believes that it is ‘very likely’ that the Church will soon abandon this demand. ‘Amen’ I say! Many will agree with him and say that this reform – to remove the compulsory nature of celibacy for priests – is well overdue. The Church changes slowly but it changes. It was not long ago, maybe under previous Popes, that any Bishop that came out publicly and questioned a long-held teaching like this, would find his next appointment somewhere to the west of Mongolia!

Shalom Day + Grandparents Day is on Thursday of this week. Always a highlight of our year, I hope lots of grandparents will be able to join us for the morning. For catering purposes, can we please ask that Grandparents / Parents on behalf of Grandparents complete the form to RSVP for Shalom Day.
Chicken Pox – I was alerted by a parent last week about the awful time their kids had dealing with a dose of this disease. They were unaware that the Government had changed the process on vaccinations and now parents had to seek this out themselves. If they had known that, they certainly would have. Might be worth your consideration if this is circulating at the moment.
Dance Performance Team just had a fantastic few days in Adelaide at the National Dance Championships. They enjoyed enormous individual and group success. We are very proud of these very talented young women and Ms McSherry and Ms McAtee who made this happen for them. I’m sure there will be reports and photos later in the Newsletter. Also, just ‘chuffed’ to get this email from people who attended this from Bundaberg who are not now directly connected to Shalom:
Hi Dan, I just want to let you know how proud I was to be able to witness the fantastic group of ladies dancing in Adelaide. John and I are neighbours of Lani Sologinkin‘s grandparents whom we travelled with to support the dancers. Our involvement was purely for enjoyment. The Shalom community should be very proud of the team who performed so well against some very high standards. To medal in 2 groups was such an honour and we couldn’t have been prouder to cheer along. The girls all were very supportive of each other and showed great sportsmanship. It brought back huge memories for us from our involvement with Rock eisteddfod days many years ago when our son Trent was a pupil of Shalom. You certainly still have a great school. Well done to all involved. John and Leanne

Year 9 and Year 10 Subject Selection Evening
This information evening will take place in the Performing Arts Precinct on Tuesday 22 August.
The information session for students and parents of Year 8 students selecting subject choices for Year 9, in 2024 will commence at 6.30pm. The information session for students and parents of Year 9 students selecting subject choices for Year 10 in 2024 will commence at 7pm.
Both presentations are short information sessions covering the subject selection process and platform we use to make subject choices online. They will also cover information about the number of Core and Elective subjects’ students are required to study, and where to access information about the subjects offered in each year level.
There will be no specific subject information given on each of the different subjects available to study because of the sheer volume on offer. This information is available in the Subject Selection Book. Learning Area Coordinators will be available on the night to address any questions you may have regarding the selection of subjects to study.
The timeline around the Year 9 and Year 10 subject selections are as follows:
Monday 21 August - Edval WebChoice portal opens for student to select. Students were emailed their individual link and code.
Tuesday 22 August - Parent Information Evening
Monday 28 August - Signed Edval WebChoice receipt to be handed into Student Reception
Year 12 – QTAC ATAR Portal Registrations
The QTAC Portal is now open and current Year 12 students are now able to register for two accounts:
1. To receive their ATAR score once published by QTAC
2. To apply to QTAC for university course entry for 2024
I have attached a ‘how to’ sheet for parents to view. I will email this to all Year 12 students as well. On Tuesday 22 August I will run a short session for students who need assistance with this. It will commence at Lunch 2 in Goondeel library.

Attached is the Year 11 Exam Block Timetable (Wednesday 6 - Monday 11 September) and the Year 12 Mock Exam Block Timetable (Monday 4 - Friday 15 September). Students need only attend school for the exams they are to sit during this time, however, students who are behind in their schoolwork may be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.

Year 11 ACTS Camp
On the Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 August, thirteen Shalom College students attended the ACTS (A Chance to Serve) Camp in Yeppoon, along with eight other colleges from around the Rockhampton Diocese. During the three days, we were able to connect and share with like-minded peers through a range of different activities. We learnt that our job, as leaders, is not only to be the best versions of ourselves, but most importantly to build an ‘army’ of leaders that will represent Shalom well. The range of activities helped to build our confidence, leadership skills and to embrace individuality.
On the second night of the camp, we were given the chance to serve one another by participating in a ritual that was held. As Jesus served disciples, we too became servant leaders ourselves. On our faith and leadership journey, we walked with Christ and prepared for our future. David Jorna, the facilitator of the camp, moulded our mindsets and taught us to bring out what God put in.
On behalf of the students that attended Year 11 ACTS Camp this year, we would like to give a big thank you to Mr McMahon, Mrs Freeman and Mrs Petersen for allowing us to have this amazing opportunity to grow as leaders. From organising us for the camp and collecting our forms, to your continual support over the three days. You are greatly appreciated.
Collated by student Ella B.
Below are some reflections from the students who attended.
From ACTS Camp I was able to take away many skills that I can use throughout my leadership journey. The one that stuck with me the most was, “what does this moment require of me?” Ella B
I found ACTS camp to be a great way out of my shell, to try new things, and develop self-confidence. I built a lot of friendships, and I even found my birthday twin. Josh J
ACTS allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and realise the many different ways one can lead. Steven P
ACTS camp allowed me to realise everyone’s own individuality and taught me how to influence people positively to bring out what God put in them. Jaslyn P
I took away friendships from this year and last year who I have grown in faith and kept in touch with, I’m re-meeting some Gladstone friends at Ignite Summer camp. Cecilia T

This week our quiet achiever is Ethan G. Ethan has been very busy celebrating success in his Surf Life Saving and representing his club at the recent Australian Pool Rescue Championships winning himself a silver medal in the Under 12 Swim and Fins. Ethan also won age champion at our school swimming carnival and has represented Shalom on several occasions this year in sport. Ethan is a great participant in all things McAuley and demonstrates teamwork, support, and a happy disposition towards fellow students. Ethan’s attitude towards his academic achievements, sporting successes, peers and staff demonstrates the words of our House Patron Catherine McAuley when she said we can never Say “it is enough” as he constantly and quietly puts in 110% effort in all he does.

Our team of Reef Guardian students had the opportunity to attend the Science Together event held on Monday 14 August, a celebration of 20 years of Reef Guardian Schools. The students heard from some inspirational guest speakers including Dr Jordan Nguyen (Biomedical Engineer, Technology Futurist), Ruben Meerman (Surfing Scientist), Craig McGrogan (The Reef Authority), Dr Amie Anastasi (CQUniversity), Cathy Gately (Dept of Environment and Science), Don Gilson (Inter-Fish Australian Corals, Melissa Lane (The Reef Authority) and Amy Gash (Lady Elliot Island). They participated in a range of activities, joining with students from schools across the Bundaberg region and explored a showcase of the initiatives their fellow Reef Guardian Schools were actioning.
As a Reef Guardian School we are committed to continue to take positive actions to contribute to Reef protection and resilience. We have an amazing opportunity to work with key stakeholders right on our doorstep including our Bundaberg Reef Guardian Council, Mon Repos Turtle Centre and the Reef Guardian Authority. Our Core Studies A students will hear more from the Reef Guardian Authority in a presentation as part of our biology unit this term. Some campaigns our Reef Guardians would like to continue to promote are:
• Cut the glow allow turtles to go.
• One Million Trees Bundaberg Region.
• Reduction of plastic waste.
• Sustainability projects.
• Core Studies Garden
Our Reef Guardian students would also like to thank the amazing Ms Catherine Pearson who helped to create our amazing display for the event. There will be a competition during our Waterford showcase evening to name our turtle that she created.
The event was a collaboration between the Bundaberg Regional Council and Reef Guardian Schools across the Bundaberg Region. This was largely driven by one of our wonderful Shalom parents, Judith Stutchbury who has written a book ‘Hatch saves the Reef’. Proceeds support student reef and environmental projects, there is a hyper link below to purchase the book. You can also find out more about the Bundaberg Regional Council's Landowner Program by clicking the red link below.

Understanding Dr. Hunter’s Sentence Types to Enhance Writing Skills: Part 1
At Shalom College, we are committed to fostering strong writing skills in our students. One powerful tool we use is Dr. Ian Hunter's Eight Sentence Types. Let's dive into four different sentence types that will help your child develop a unique and varied writing style.
1. The Very Short Sentence:
- These sentences consist of five words or less and create a strong impact.
Encourage your child to strategically place these sentences in the middle of a paragraph or as the final sentence to surprise the reader.
Examples:
- Gravity accelerates objects towards Earth.
- The formula relates variables in equations.
- Muscles contract for movement control.
2. The W-Start:
- Begin sentences with W words like "while," "when," "with," or "whereas."
- This style lays the foundation for analytical writing.
Encourage your child to use W-start sentences when analysing texts or presenting arguments.
Examples:
- When studying genetics, scientists encountered fascinating mutations.
- Whereas aerobic exercise boosts endurance, anaerobic exercise builds strength.
- With collaboration, the team achieved exceptional results in the tournament.
3. Adverb at the Front:
- Introducing an adverb at the beginning of a sentence adds intrigue and interest.
- Examples of adverbs to use: "interestingly," "curiously," "thoughtfully," "remarkably," "importantly," "usefully," "now," "so," or "yet."
Encourage your child to experiment with these adverbs to captivate the reader from the start.
Examples:
- Curiously, the art movement began in a small village, but its influence spread across continents.
- Interestingly, the death of Caesar shaped the course of civilizations and influenced contemporary societal values.
- Importantly, proper warm-up reduces the risk of injuries during exercise.
4. Em Dash:
- The em dash allows for the insertion of a disconnected thought within a sentence.
- It can be used to change tense, direction, or narrator, adding depth to the writing.
Encourage your child to incorporate em dashes to enhance their storytelling or add emphasis to a specific point.
Examples:
- The data suggested a trend—a steady increase in temperature.
- The participants were excited—a chance to compete at the regional level.
- Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa—a masterpiece admired worldwide—displays enigmatic beauty.
Mastering these sentence structures can significantly improve your child's writing. These techniques empower them to make their work stand out and communicate with clarity and style.

Teacher & Literacy Coordinator

The library staff at Shalom keep our ears open when students tell us what they want to read, and we always try to stay in step with the student’s personal interests so that we can engage with them at that juncture.
That said, there are an exciting new batch of leisure books and periodicals currently being processed that meet those topics that have been requested. These cover: sports, motor racing, rally cars, dirt biking, and coin collecting. We have also extended the current Erin Hunter Warriors and Survivors series to include the Seekers and Bravelands series as well.
Remember, we encourage students to let us know if there is a subject that they would like us to seek information on because it’s your library not ours.

2023 Vicki Wilson State Finals - Netball
Last weekend, Shalom College’s Junior Vicki Wilson team travelled to Brisbane to compete in the State Finals of the 2023 Vicki Wilson competition.
The team played their ‘Pool Rounds’ on Friday, facing some very tough competition in Moreton Bay College, Mountain Creek SHS and Canterbury College. The team finished the pool rounds with a win against St Eugene’s College, moving them into the playoffs for 9th-16th place.
During the ‘Finals’ round, the team played extremely well to record a strong win first up against St Patrick’s Mackay, before suffering a deflating loss to the Deadly Choices First Nations Invitational team. Moving into the playoff for 11th/12th place, the girls pulled themselves back up after this defeat and recorded a solid win against Wavell SHS, a netball school of excellence.
With over 200 teams starting the Vicki Wilson Competition, 11th place overall is an excellent achievement, and in the 2023 competition this also made the Shalom College Junior VW team the highest placed regional school in the competition. Great work team!
A very big thank you must go to our Team Manager (Ms Jess Richards) and Bus Driver & Head Cheerleader (Mr Craig Hammermeister) for also giving up their time over the weekend for the team.
